Seemed like only recently Hideo and Arashi Akiyama had worked together to keep this herd of Wooloo safe from a herd of Lycanrocs. But after a freak storm had happened, the farmer once again called on him for aid, this time because some of the herd got freaked out and got out, and ran away.

Though from what Hideo was told, it wasn't going to be Arashi helping him out this time. Someone else he didn't know the name of. He wouldn't complain; he knew keeping the herd under control was already impossible for a single person and their Pokemon.

He just had to wait for them to arrive, though he'd already sent out one of his Pokemon to go scout the area. If they could spot any now, it'd make it that much easier to round them up.

His Medicham waited by his side, also looking out for any runaway Wooloos.

Dom tried to chase away the biting annoyance in the back of his mind. He'd only just finished helping a rancher with DEREK HOFFMAN. And, while that had been exciting enough in its own right, he'd hoped that was the last time he needed to play farmer. Everyone deserved the help of a ranger was what he repeated to himself as he walked up the path, Magnolia lumbering just behind him.[break][break]

He caught sight of a figure on the road ahead, just where he was supposed to meet his partner. Dom squinted, frowning. Was that a child? Certainly that couldn't be the person who was going to help him round up stray Wooloo. Where were this kid's parents? He had to remind himself that he had been doing more dangerous missions through ranger camp when he was about that age. And there were plenty of kids who started training Pokemon early and traveled. Rounding up a couple of sheep was hardly treacherous work. Still...[break][break]

"Hi, uh, I'm Dominic," he said as he approached, waving. "Are you here to help with the Wooloo?"

Hideo’s Medicham alerted him when the man approached, Hideo perking up and listening well when he heard the voice.

“Yeah, I’m here to help wrangle all the runaway Wooloos,” Hideo said, raising his hand. “I’m Hideo. I’ve helped this farmer with these Pokemon before, so I felt like I’d have a better chance finding them.”

He turned towards the field. “Although it’s more like my Pokemon are looking for them. I’m…not personally that great at looking for lost Pokemon.” His only attempts were with groups, or in immediately-threatening situations. Either way, he was mostly just following along. As much confidence as he had in his abilities, there were some things he was better off leaving to others.

The shadow of a large bird Pokemon covered Hideo, though what drew the boy’s attention was the flapping of wings. It had a pair of Wooloo in its claws, and neatly deposited them on the ground before flying off to search for more. “There’s some alread-”

The Wooloo, seeing a familiar face, bounded their way to Hideo, jumping into the boy’s chest. It was a soft landing, but it knocked Hideo to the ground, the sheep clinging tight to him. As tightly as they could with digitless limbs.

“Guess they like being back,” Hideo joked, patting the Wooloo on their fluffy coats.

He tried to hide the wince that must have contorted his face. But Hideo did say he'd helped this farmer before, so maybe Dom was making a big deal out of nothing. Still, this was a kid and—as Hideo mentioned that his Pokemon were the ones that would be searching, the puzzle pieces began to fall into place—Dom realized this was a blind kid.[break][break]

He suddenly felt very silly about waving.[break][break]

The sound of wings saved him from saying anything stupid. He squinted up, lifting a hand to shield his eyes, and watched as a Honchkrow delivered two of the missing Wooloo. The little sheep immediately bolted for Hideo and Dom made an unsuccessful attempt to catch the boy as he fell. The kid didn't seem too bothered, though, and Dom smiled. Pulling Pokeballs from his belt, he released North, Nova, and Aurora.[break][break]

"Aurora, check the fence line for downed trees and bits of broken fence, okay? Nova, North, you're in charge of finding the Wooloo and herding them this way. Ay, North—" The Noivern hesitated mid-takeoff, eyeballing Dom with a disapproving air. Dom caught his gaze and stared hard for a moment. "No. Eating." North hesitated as if to see if Dom would relent but, eventually, he huffed and took to the air in a flurry of wind. The other Pokemon broke off to their assigned duties without any argument.[break][break]

Dom cleared his throat and turned to where Hideo was, presumably, still buried under the happy Wooloo. "Need a hand up, kid?" He extended a hand, winced, but kept it extended anyhow. "You said you worked with this farmer before, huh? What happened last time?" One day Dom would have the money or the influence or whatever it was he needed to start a fund for providing farmers with their own trained herding Pokemon. Until then, he supposed, they'd have to rely on the generosity of strangers.

Fortunately, it sounded like his partner was well-prepared for a search-and-rescue, even setting out a flying Pokemon.

Though that he had to specify to not eat the Wooloo, got an eyebrow raise from the boy.

Hideo raised his hand, expecting to feel his Medicham's. But instead what he felt was a person's hand. He let himself be pulled up, the two Wooloo rolling off and prancing towards their pen. "Thank you," Hideo said, brushing himself off.

"Last time, I was here with a friend. We were supposed to keep an eye on the Wooloo while the farmer sheared them all." For obvious reasons, the watching part was also something his Pokemon did the majority of. "Some Lycanroc showed up, but our Pokemon were able to keep them away. 'course, the Wooloo knocked me down back then too."

Harmlessly, of course. No harm, no foul, and he got to take a Miltank with him for the trouble.

Another one of Hideo's Pokemon returned, this time his Arcanine, surrounded by a herd of damp Wooloo eager to warm up. She stopped right by Hideo, nuzzling the boy on the cheek. "Great job, Floofer!" Hideo praised, "Lead'em back to the pen, alright?"

He got a happy yip from the Arcanine, who the soggy sheep followed without resistance, each trying to get closer to her warm body.

"You ever work with Wooloo before?" Hideo asked, turning back towards Dominic. "They can be really affectionate! I got one of my own, and she's practically attached to some of my other Pokemon!"

Dom watched as Hideo brushed himself off. He seemed like a pretty capable kid. "Here, buddy, you got a little—" he brushed a few stray crumbs of dirt from Hideo's shoulder. He gave a laugh at Hideo's story about the Wooloo. "Sounds about like the job I had." He was interrupted by the arrival of an Arcanine surrounded by her own tiny herd of Wooloo. He grinned at the group as they passed, the massive canine leading the sheep to their pen.[break][break]

As if on cue, Nova returned, leading a group of the electric sheep in much the same way. Her smaller frame, however, meant that she wasn't a head and shoulders above them, and she looked more than a little perturbed that they kept trying to get so close. Her tails flicked as she passed Dom, cutting her eyes at the ranger before following the Arcanine back to the pen with her own small group.[break][break]

"Another ranger and I were hired to keep an eye on a farmer's herd. The little guys almost bowled Derek over trying to get to the treats he brought." He chuckled remembering Derek throwing the treat bag in an effort to convince the Wooloo to leave him alone. "A small pack of Mightyena tried to sneak over the fence, but we were able to take care of them without any of the Wooloo getting hurt." He chewed his lip a moment, looking over his shoulder towards where Nova and the Arcanine had led their group of Wooloo. "You seem really great with your Pokemon, by the way. I don't see a lot of people with that kind of bond."

Hideo didn’t mind the assistance with brushing off dirt; if his partner hadn’t done it, it would’ve been his Medicham, or any of his other Pokemon.

He grinned at his partner’s bemusement. “It was a pretty easy job. I actually have a Lycanroc of my own, and he would’ve been perfect for this one…but I’m pretty sure the last Pokemon these lost Wooloo want to see is another Lycanroc.” And it probably wasn’t a good idea to make the Wooloo herd more comfortable around one of their main predators.

His own Wooloo got attached to his Lycanroc very quickly.

Hideo heard the arrival of another Pokemon - a flying-type from the sound of flapping wings, though it wasn’t the same sound as his Honchkrow’s; there was a different speed to the flapping, a different weight to them. Must’ve been his partner’s Pokemon.

“Sounds a lot like what I dealt with,” Hideo said, “just with Mightyenas. Seems like it went just as well as it did for me.” He had to wonder just how many farmers there were out there with Wooloo herds - and how many needed to hire trainers to keep them safe.

Just as Dominic complimented his performance, Hideo could hear the approach of another Pokemon: big heavy steps, as well as the bleating of many Wooloo. Hideo realized it was his shiny Aggron approaching before his Medicham alerted him, his head and arms covered in sheep. His Pokemon got close, gently lowering the Wooloo to the ground, allowing the herd to rush towards the warm Arcanine in the back.

Hideo blushed slightly at the compliment. “Oh, thanks! I’ve spent a lot of time training them, and I’ve been through quite a bit with Aaron there. Had him since he was an Aron!”

The Aggron walked over, gently patting the boy on the head with its large, metal-like claws, before walking off once more to look for more Wooloo.

“Aaron there can even Mega Evolve! He’s the first Pokemon I got that can do that, and it’s come in handy more than once!” The biggest time he could recall was with that Melmetal over on Cycling Road way back when.

Way back when being less than a year ago, but that was back when he was still at home.

Nova barely managed to pry herself from the group of Wooloo—they were much more amenable to leaving once they got close to the bigger (and warmer) Arcanine. She huffed at them, cutting her eyes for a moment at Dom. But before he could say anything she was off again, looking for more of the little sheep.[break][break]

The sound of rushing wings signaled North's return. In his claws, the Noivern carried a Wooloo that looked horrified. With a few flaps, he lowered the sheep nearly to the ground before dropping it and flying off to find another. The Wooloo stood in shock for a moment, staring blankly, before it shook itself and bolted for the rest of the herd. At that moment, an Aggron approached, carrying an almost comical armful of Wooloo. Dom smiled up at him as he set down his burden and returned to his full height.[break][break]

"You did a fire job raising him, bro. He looks super healthy." Dom paused as the Pokemon patted Hideo on the head and returned to the field. "And he can mega evolve?" He couldn't help but sound impressed. "None of mine can do that yet. That's killer. Maybe you should give me some tips some time, yeah?"

The Arcanine was finding herself very popular with the Wooloo, more and more congregating around her to warm up. Though the pen was mostly closed-off, there was still enough sunlight coming in, and with that, she could expedite their drying: her body glowed a warm white as she channeled the Morning Sun, her warmth spreading further through the pen.

Hideo could feel it from where he was standing, and he could recognize the warm hum of that move. And just in time for another of his partner's Pokemon to drop off some more Wooloo.

Hideo blushed a bit. Not due to the warmth, but from the praise his partner gave him. "Oh, thanks!" he responded, not one to downplay his achievements. "He's been in a few tough fights, but I make sure to give him time between each fight to get better. Helps that I got some Pokemon that can heal well!"

As for how to actually get Pokemon to that level? "Well, it's a bit different for each one. You gotta have a close bond with them - I got that by spending a lot of time with Aaron."

"Of course, you also gotta get a mega stone for them too! I got an Aggronite for Aaron. I'd show it off, but uh, I didn't think he'd need to Mega Evolve to find sheep."

Also, his mega form would probably scare the Wooloo away.

"But your Pokemon seem to listen to you pretty well! I'm sure at least some of them might already be mega evolve-able. If you can find the right stone for them."
