Sending a Rocket Beast on a good will mission seemed a bit counter-productive, but Rowan wasn't about to turn down an assignment because of personal misgivings with the dubious nature of the outing. Still, measures were taken so he didn't appear to be the same man who murdered the Pokémon of a gym leader in Sootopolis City. "Damn this wig itches." Rowan complained, adjusting the faux black hair that covered his signature two-tones locks.

"Karkinos, knock out that Geodude." The Kingler scuttled forward to use Crabhammer in order to dispatch the Rock-type with ease, leaving Rowan to pass a searching glance to see if another Rocket had come along. He didn't need assistance necessarily, but working alongside other members was a good way to build camaraderie, something he needed more of for people to respect him as a Beast.

If Rowan listened closely, he would be able to hear the distan, thunderous rumble of huge dinosaur feet stomping the ground, intermixed with the plaintive, helpless cries of wild Pokemon as they scrambled for their lives. A horrific roar filled the abandoned secret base and the very walls trembled as if in fear.

Grog careened wildly down an adjacent hallway, crushing an errant Geodude beneath him with one mighty stomp of his feet. He put his head down and went slamming into a Whismur, crashing into a wall at the end of the hallway, and roaring around the corner.

Cygne walked calmly behind him, half-lidded eyes taking in the destruction around her.

The 8-foot-tall tyrannosaur shook his head, rock and grit tumbling from his crown, and then fell into step beside his trainer.

Together, they approached Rowan, Grog’s breath a thick growl in the air.

“‘Sup?”

“Oh, hello.” Rowan offered a slight nod towards the newcomer, another face he unfortunately didn’t recognize but one he was determined to know more about before leaving this place. “I’m Rowan, nice to meet you.” A hulking Pokémon like Tyrantrum was an interesting choice for such a small cavern, but he wasn’t about to discourage a grunt from showing off their strongest partner.

“Karkinos, over here.” The Kingler scuttled over to Rowan’s side, clacking and hissing some indiscernible response. “There are some more Pokémon that need cleared out further in, I’ll show you.” Hidden bases were often winding and ridiculous creations, it wasn’t difficult to get lost in one of many of their dead ends.

“So, how long have you been in the organization?”

Rowan Wrynn was definitely different than what she’d expected. Cyg knew him-- of him, at least-- from both the dossier on the mission she’d read literally on her way to perform it and also because he was a Beast. Everyone knew the Rocket Beasts were big. Scary. Not to be fucked with.

This was not who she was expecting. When Cyg thought of what a Rocket Beast looked like, honestly, FERNANDO SILPH was the first person that popped to her head. Tall, dark, mysterious, sharp, brooding. Successful. Not that he was one, obviously. Probably. But because he looked like he should be one.

Rowan… looked less like one. But that’s what she got for assuming. He was polite and he greeted her, which came as more of a shock than even his unassuming, bad-wigged appearance. She just expected orders.

There was a terrible grinding noise as Grog itched his face on the corner of the cavern, sending dirt and chips of rock skittering to the ground. Cyg waited until he was done, wincing a bit, to say “Hi Rowan. I’m Cygne. Nice to meet you too.” Grog made a rumbling sound and Cyg placed her hand on his leg. “Yes, buddy. We know you’re here.”

He was not her first choice for a goodwill mission in cramped quarters. Well, he was, literally, her first choice-- her only choice. Feldspar was too sleepy and Elisabet was too nice. She also didn’t have a great moveset for this task. Grog, whose only purpose in life was to smash, stomp, and chomp his way through it, was the most appropriate tool for the job.

“Lead the way,” she said, falling in step behind him, with Grog bringing up the rear. She’d remembered dreaming of a hidden base when she was just a child-- somewhere she could go to get away from the mundane of her real life, where money was no object. “Officially, a couple months. But I was doing a lot of civilian stuff before I put my name on the paper. Protests, strikes, volunteer work. That kinda thing.”

“Good to hear.” Rowan was pleased they seemed dedicated to the cause, not forced into the organization like some had been in the past. Team Rocket wasn’t above using leverage to ensure loyalty, although Rowan himself didn’t approve of the practice. “I hope you don’t mind me asking, but…” Amber eyes glanced towards a Hariyama lurking in the shadows, clicking his tongue to set Karkinos after the Pokémon, looking to dispatch them with a Crabhammer.

“...What makes you believe in Team Rocket? Why were you so willing to join?” A pause, before he followed up. “No judgment, promise. It’s all curiosity.” He had his own reasons, so those of others always intrigued him.

Cygne hadn’t been around for the quote-unquote bad days of Rocket, what with the Shanghai-ing and basically indentured servitude. She’d been very careful to not take money from the org, as well-- not because of any fear of retribution or sinister debt collecting, but rather due to her individualistic nature, and her unique skillset of surviving, if not thriving, through poverty. [break][break]

She watched with a bored indifference as Rowan Wrynn ’s Kingler quickly went to work handling a lurking Hariyama; Grog, meanwhile, crunched down on a Golbat and was still carrying it in his mouth, like a dog guarding a bone. [break][break]

Rowan asked her a good question-- a deep question. She slipped a tendril of white-blonde hair behind her ear. “At the risk of sounding God-awful cheesy,” she said, sort of-kind of preparing to bare her soul, “I really believe things could be different if Rocket was in charge.” She looked Rowan in the eye, confident in her conviction. “I’ve lived in Hoenn all my life. My parents have lived in Hoenn all their lives. I’ve had a job since I was sixteen, and until I joined Rocket, that was what the end goal of my future was: employed.” She snorted in derision. "Like, what's your answer when someone asks you what your dream job is? I don't have one. I don't dream of employment." [break][break]

Grog found a Graveller to stomp on and the cavern shook with his delighted trouncing as he crushed it repeatedly beneath his rocky foot. [break][break]

“Fair enough.” Rowan found it easy to accept her answer at face value, knowing that he’d harbored similar feelings towards the organization. “The League is an outdated, corrupt and authoritarian regime that exists to oppress the citizens of Hoenn and hinder progress.” A sentence he’d repeated countless times, but didn’t happen to be any less true anytime it had been spoken.

“Most fear Team Rocket because of what happened in Kanto, but that isn’t the same Team Rocket. Murder and pillaging isn’t what will win over the populace, and as long as the current leadership is in place won’t be our projected direction.” Assurance, important to those that were new to the organization. Rumors of the horrors of Kanto had been widespread, and there was some part of everyone that feared the same would happen in Hoenn.

“That’s why we do things like this.” Arms outstretched, gesturing to the cavern. “Good will missions that show we are the better alternative, a revolution that can oust Dahlia Goode and her amoral council.”

Listening to Rowan go off, albeit calmly, about the League was comforting to Cyg. She whole-heartedly agreed in everything he was saying. “Yeah, all those things,” she assented with a nod. “To be honest, I haven’t heard much about what happened in Kanto.” Maybe because she was purposefully trying to avoid looking into it-- maybe because, she didn’t want to blemish the idealized Rocket that was in her head.

“Buuuut I know Rocket’s gone through a lot of changes, so it wouldn’t make sense to think it was the same org, at all.”

She looked when he gestured at the wide space around them, turning in a slow circle. When he got to the bit about deposing Dahlia, she couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Well, maybe I don’t have quite your conviction,” she said, smiling, “but definitely providing something… else. Something better. Something where people like me don’t have to work 45 hours a week to stay alive.”

Grog was chewing on something else in the background-- a chair or piece of furniture left behind by the previous operatives.

A small chuckle elicited from Rowan’s throat at the mention of a work week, surprised she was so fixated on the ideal. “I wouldn’t know much about that. I grew up rich, ran away from home then ended up in Rocket. Haven’t worked a real job a day in my life.” He shrugged, scooping up a rock from the ground and tossing it into a nearby crevice. Zubat came streaming out of the seams in the rock, flitting about the cave.

Karkinos unleashed a stream of bubbles from their mouth, the Kingler managing to clean up a fair deal of the Pokémon with a single attack, a show of strength if there ever was one. “Have you met Underboss Merlino, yet?”
