the hills of rustboro are not as quiet as they usually are. for good reason, too, as residents, locals, and even tourists, visit to pay their respects for the new year. among them is rustboro's own ana stone, though a case could be made otherwise.

"excuse me."

she approaches the shrine with a smile and with a bundle of incense in her hand.

"do you have a light?"

[attr="class","tctext"] Elisabeth was not a particularly spiritual person, but she would consider herself, she supposed, a traditional one. The first visit to the shrine on New Year's was something she hadn't attempted since childhood; there was a sort of peace in performing it again after so long. She had much to meditate upon regarding this past year: things to be grateful for, things to mourn, changes to come to terms with.[break][break]

Her Misdreavus, Lavender, hovered around Elisabeth with keen interest as the blonde prepared incense for burning among the throng of tourists and locals present in Rustboro. At the sound of ANA STONE's voice, she turned to the stranger with a warm smile. "You may have mine," she said, handing the lighter to her. "I no longer need it." As if to illustrate why, the sweetly cloying scent of her incense wafted past them both on a cool winter breeze.[break][break]

"Paying your respects for the New Year?" she asked lightly.[break][break]

she accepts the lighter with a smile, scratching a flame to life before holding the end of an incense to it. it burns, smoke wafting between them.

to her question, ana nods.

"more so praying for good fortune than paying respect. i'm not a believer, unfortunately."

she extends the lighter back over.

"yourself?"

[attr="class","tctext"] "That makes us a pair of lost souls, then." A faint smile tugged at Elisabeth's lips. "I don't know if it is unfortunate or not, though. Belief can't be feigned; it simply is or isn't." [break][break]
The smoke from Ana's incense perfumed the air with a heady, intoxicating scent.[break][break]
"Good fortune in what respect? Romance, wealth, happiness... or ambition?" The last came out with a rich laugh, her eyes twinkling with curiosity. "I find Hoenn attracts many types, despite my short time here. As for me, I suppose I seek peace more than anything else. It has been a trying year." [break][break]
Her Misdreavus phased in and out of the smoke with a giggle, delighting in the strange shimmer left in the air.

"i couldn't agree more."

the incense leaves a brief trail of smoke as ana places it in the shrine.

"all of the above?" she chuckles, but soon shakes her head. "ambition. there are things i'd like to accomplish here. can't hurt to maybe tilt the scales in my favor."

her rotom materializes as well, appearing from behind the shrine in a frantic display of zipping and zapping.

"i'm afraid you won't find much peace in hoenn."

[attr="class","tctext"] "Ambition is a wise pursuit," Elisabeth agreed warmly; it was, in part, why she had come here to Hoenn herself. "Striving for things makes life a little more worthwhile. I'll say a prayer, then, to deities neither of us are sure we believe in, that we might succeed in our ambitions in the coming year."[break][break]
The blonde bowed her head in perfect reverence nonetheless, her lips moving silently in prayer. Then Elisabeth gathered one of the charms swaying about the shrine and wrote her intentions upon it; as promised, Elisabeth included those of the stranger beside her, before hanging it up with many of the others within the shrine.[break][break]
Her Misdreavus hummed pleasantly as Elisabeth continued in this task, the Pokemon's large eyes focused on Ana with rapt curiosity.[break][break]
Listening to her companion with a slow nod, Elisabeth offered a thin smile. "Ah. A poor choice of location in that regard, yes, I am told. At least I had not chosen Johto or Kanto, hm?" The dark humour did not seem meant to evoke laughter. "I suppose nowhere is truly free from strife. Kalos certainly wasn't."

[attr="class","tctext"] Sinnoh. Had Elisabeth ever been to Sinnoh? A distant family vacation blurred in her memory, frayed and faded--not enough for her to recall properly, so many years later, except that it had been a pleasant trip.[break][break]

"I hear Sinnoh can be quite beautiful," Elisabeth said instead. "My mother used to sing the praises of the flowers of Floaroma Town. She had the opportunity to paint them, once." [break][break]

The blonde remembered well the watercolours depicting the blushing blooms, prominently framed with love and care in her childhood home. A small smile tugged at her lips. "Perhaps that's why I became a florist, come to think of it."[break][break]

How strange that she and this woman had already spoken so much and not even shared their names. Elisabeth had not noticed the peculiarity until Ana voiced it aloud, and the blonde laughed lightly at the dawning realisation.[break][break]

"Elisabeth." The woman's handshake was warmly accepted and returned, Elisabeth's crystal blue eyes meeting her gaze evenly. "And this is Lavender," she said belatedly, her Misdreavus making petulant faces at having been ignored.[break][break]

More tourists were seeking entrance to the shrine, so Elisabeth excused herself, motioning that Ana was free to follow her down the stairs if she wished to continue the conversation. [break][break]

despite being born here in rustboro.

not wanting to be rude to the others, ana follows down the stairs, keen on continuing their conversation.

"oh! hi there, lavender. this is rotomone."

she offers a small wave to the ghost-type. rotom, however, offers much more than that. it zips and bumps right into the misdreavus.

"a florist...do you own your own shop, then?"

[attr="class","tctext"] "I do. Fiorelli Floristry." Elisabeth descended the stair with a slow grace, amused at the interaction between the Rotom and her Misdreavus. "It is a little cottage on the outskirts of Petalburg City, near the woods. I'd be delighted to see you and Rotomone there sometime."[break][break]
As sunset streaked across the sky in gorgeous oranges and blues, Elisabeth found herself briefly struck with the awe of the sight from their high vantage point. For all the her professed disinterest in superstition and divinity, moments like this did suggest a certain sense that a new year could bring with it a clean slate.[break][break]
"Speaking of Petalburg, I fear it is a long way home, and I have flowers to tend to." She let out a regretful sigh as she reached the base of the stair, already dreading the long walk home, before allowing herself a smile. "Thank you for your company. I had been anticipating a rather lonesome evening, but I am glad it turned out otherwise. May the new year treat you well, Ana."
