All words feel hollow in his mind and so he doesn't permit them to leave his lips, pressing them together as his stomach twists and tightening his grip around Eris' fragile frame. She's so small.

He draws back when she asks him a question directly, to look her in the eye.

"Of course I do."

He'd promised Chu-e Choi they'd do all they could to save him. None of it had been enough. Even if they had the mulch that Gavin had spoke of, the bluish dirt borne of Xerneas' power and rumoured to bring back the dead, what were they to do without a body?

"But I couldn't, no more than you, and Chu-e wouldn't want us blaming ourselves for something we can't change. You know that, don't you?"

It's a dangerous thing, hope.

Gavin feels it spark in his chest and does his best to smother it with reason, logic. He'd hoped, once, to put an end to the wasting sickness that was claiming his friend. It had all been for naught.

He doesn't answer her question; he doesn't know. Are you happier? What is there, after death? Is there anything at all? Is the nothing better than all the grief and hurt?{/i] He swallows hard enough to hurt.

Is it hypocritical of him to thirst after the very same power promised in his own, even as he shakes his head in sharp defiance of Eris' suggestion?

"Eris... that letter could be from anyone — it could be a trap." He thinks the same of his own, yet he still plans to meet this 'Father Winter' in the frigid depths of Shoal Cave. He hopes Eris doesn't plan the same. "What if it's from Silph? Or someone else from the League? What if they're trying to take advantage of — of your grief," he finishes sadly. "It's not worth your life, Eris. You have that to lose, and Chu-e wouldn't want you to put yourself in danger like that."

I don't want you to put yourself in danger.

But his desires don't hold the same weight as those of her late father figure, Gavin thinks.

I'm sick of letting others take from me.

That's what does it, for Gavin. It's not responsible, but he sees a part of himself in her stubborn willpower and doesn't have the heart to further dissuade her against taking charge of her own fate. She was only twelve, true, but at twelve had faced horrors most grown adults couldn't dream of.

"Promise me that you'll be careful, Eris." Unsaid, I know I can't persuade you otherwise. "Whatever happens. If you're in danger, you know you can ask for help."

His help, or the help of half of Rocket. She was well-liked within their ranks.

He'd offer to go with her... but he can't. I have my own fate to chase.

"I'm quite capable of looking after myself," he reminds Eris, lip twitching in a failed attempt to summon a smile. "If I go looking for something, I'd never go alone."

Lugia would be with him, he hopes. If not her, then all of his shadows.

After a pause, he asks, "Do you want me to get Leon?"

But Gavin stops himself with a shake of his head. There's no point arguing with such a willful child. It's hard to convince her of anything.

Much as he'd rather see her safe, her words cut to the heart of an issue.

"I do have to go, now." Apologetic, but accepting. Not to get rest, but to continue this ugly business of spreading the word. "But if Leon or anyone else turns you away, you come to me, understand? Consider that an order."

With a last hesitation, he retracts from her and gets up to go.
