he tries his best to get his scowl out of his face, but seeing his large ass typhlosion taking up so much room when other people have cuter pokemon around was not doing it. how else is he supposed to appear nice? part of him regrets his decision to not go with his riolu instead.

"let's get this over with," he grumbles.

with thoughts clouding his head, he begrudgingly lumbers towards the table he was assigned to. standing in front of it, he double checks the number he received on his card to make sure he's not lost, before tapping the other man's shoulder and then speaking up.

"hey," he greets, voice gruff. he clears his throat, trying to get a friendlier tone out. "name's wolfgang volkov. yours?"

Pace hadn't really had any difficulty choosing which of his babies to take with him today. Shep was the perfect wingwoman - literally, since the whole bird thing, but also she was fat and cuddly and everything the perfect pigeon should be. Who couldn't resist falling in love with her, and by proxy, him?[break][break]

This speed-dating thing was going to be easy as hell to win, which is something that is both normal to want and possible to achieve. Let's ignore the fact that Pace doesn't believe in love and thinks all relationships are fleeting. That's for therapy, and therapy comes right after finding gorgeous strangers to smooch on.[break][break]

He's approached first by a gruff-sounding guy, just as handsome as Pace was hoping for. He stands and smiles, Shepset positioned on the table like a chubby, feathered centrepiece vase. Always one for immediate physical contact, Pace offers the semi-scowling man before him his hand.[break][break]

"Pace" He introduces himself. "Nice to meet you, Wolfgang. Pretty crazy environment here, huh? You look great, by the way."[break][break]

His eye, then, inevitably, is drawn to the Typhlosion that stands just behind Wolfgang like an awkward date or lost child. Pace beams welcomingly at the pokémon, as well. "That's a hell of a Typhlosion you've got there. Big guy!"

"nice to meet you, pace."

it's a nice name. easy to remember and since it's just a single syllable, easy to say as well.

"yeah, that's what people usually say when they're trying to be polite," he says unknowingly, letting it slip from his thoughts.

when the others attention goes to his typhlosion, wolfgang turns to his pokemon beside him. "yeah, he's getting fat." he then turns to pace's own bird. "yours look pretty big too."

he's unsure of what to say now. there was a reason why his social life was shit, and it shows with the lack of communication skills. awkwardly, he lets a smile out as he stirs something up.

"so, uh, you like big guys, or somethin'?"

Pace, on the other hand, was very good with social situations. He'd been navigating them pretty swiftly for most of his life, whether it was trying to avoid angering his mother, fitting in at school, or working dirty jobs for the Sinnoh syndicate.[break][break]

He could tell that maybe Wolfgang was the type to struggle a little more as he replies, calling his pokémon fat and then calling Pace's dear Pidove fat in turn. Someone else might've been offended, but Pace only beams and nods. "Oh, she's spoilt as hell, yeah."[break][break]

He tries to keep things polite and easy, full of sunny smiles, but what Wolfgang coughs up about big guys tickles him so hard he can't but burst out laughing.[break][break]

"Do I.... wha... big guys?" He grins. "That's a hell of a question to ask someone on our first date. To answer your question, I don't judge either way. Don't people say size doesn't matter nowadays?"

"shit!"

the typhlosion gets spooked by its trainer. flames rose from its back before they died down eventually.

a single, loud word booms from wolfgang. a hand sweeps his hair upwards, strands of white hair clumping in between his fingers. an arm rests on the table as he composes himself from the outburst

"do people not say that?" he asks.

he'd been far too secluded from the dating scene that he has forgotten the ins and outs, if he ever learned them.

"well, fuck it." he gives up on actually sounding like anything but himself. "preference and shit. that still exists for other people, yeah? they just say that shit to sound morally superior. it's bullshit, to be honest."

he heaves a sigh.

"you one of those? i mean, not having a preference is still one, i guess."

As his date's Typhlosion has it's little flare-up, Shepset squeaks in panic from her roost on the table, and Pace pets her back reassuringly. He watches Wolfgang run a hand through his hair and decides to lean his own arm on the table - maybe it'd set his partner a little more at ease.[break][break]

"Not usually so bluntly like that, unless they're looking to get right to the good part. Y'know, no judgement here, but just letting you know"[break][break]

Pace's plan of putting his partner at ease seems to have worked, as Wolfgang begins to talk a little more casually. Less like he's thinking about it. It pulls a smile further across Pace's face. "Preference, hm... I mean, I guess I have some preferences, but for the most point I'm down for anything. Kinda makes me sound like a slut, but hey, might as well be open about it" He laughs.[break][break]

He takes a moment to let his gaze explore Wolfgang's face - he's a good looking guy, for certain. The whole grumpy loner thing works well for him, too.[break][break]

"You know, I'd say you're one of the best looking people here tonight. Lucky me, huh?"[break][break]

Sickeningly sweet.

wolfgang gets red. he's not used to people being too straightforward on this kind of matter, despite being too blunt as well, albeit on a different tone of conversation.

his lips quiver in a loss of words.

taking out a slip of paper, he quickly jots down his number and hands it over aggressively, as if pushing it straight to the other's chest. as soon as he sees the motion of him grabbing it, he lets go.

"here! just fucking take this." he starts inching away, wanting the time to end fast. "you know what to do with it."

Pace watches Wolfgang's cheeks blaze red, which only serves to draw a bigger smirk across Pace's lips. He raises a brow, waiting for a response as his date cusses and hesitates. Wolfgang scribbles something down on a piece of paper and pushes it towards him, the note colliding with Pace's chest as he beams and takes it gently.[break][break]

The bell dings and Wolfgang is already on his way out of there after having given his number to him. Bingo.. Pace gives him a polite nod, refrains from offering him a parting handshake in case his date partner were to burst into flames, and pockets the slip of paper.[break][break]

"I sure do. Was nice to meet you, Wolfgang, see you later, yeah?"[break][break]

And with that, he smugly awaits the next.
