Trained to battle may be an understatement. The way the Alolan Raichu mixed adorableness with sheer brutality was like an expert chef making garbage and caviar into a 4-course meal. It was a little disconcerting. “That’s one way to put it,” Cyg allowed, Elisabet floating eerily over her shoulder. She smiled at her Haunter, who grinned back, long flopping in the mountainside breeze.

Martín del Mar was saying something about how cool and fresh and neat it was she worked in Mauville-- he wasn’t, but she needed a win-- when his breath caught and the air around them became charged with what Cyg could only say was focus. She turned to look at him, a questioning look on her face, and found him… changed: he looked happy, and just the slightest bit overwhelmed. Her heart did a weird squeeze and she tried to ignore it. She followed the line of his eyes to the little Unown, bobbing and flipping innocently about its business.

The world around them began to fizzle and pop and Cyg shifted a bit closer to Mars out of surprise. Elisabet, hovering above the ground-- and mostly intangible-- seemed unaffected by the electric terrain. Notus was there and gone in the blink of an eye, even as Cyg’s hair began to lift up from her scalp because of the static electricity. In a split second the Unown was canted in the air at an odd angle, yellow sparks dancing across the surface of it’s letter-shaped body, eye half-frozen in a blink. Mars hit it with a Luxury Ball.

Cyg tamped down on her lifting babyhairs with both and turned away, tempted to ask her Haunter to lick them back into place. In doing so, she saw the Breloom, cute little dinosaur face watching the happenings from a little ways away. “Elisabet, use hypnosis,” she ordered, and the Haunter faded from view. The wild Breloom noticed it had been noticed with a start, and turned to flee, just as Elisabet floated up from the ground in front of it. The Breloom took one step and fell on it’s stomach, snoring peaceably.

Cyg walked a little closer and tossed a PokeBall, calling over her shoulder: “You really like Unown, huh?”

It seemed an odd species to be super passionate about.

There must have been more words starting with ‘R’ in the Unown Report, but only those two had been unlocked at this point in time. They came to his mind within an instant, and he saw them just as they were displayed in the all too strange app – photographic memories.

For a moment, while the Luxury Ball bobbed from side to side – flickering lights as if determining if it was ever meant to contain an Unown at all – Mars forgot all about his surroundings, even seeming to forget to breathe. Once it stopped, once the capture was confirmed, he inhaled deeply, as if filled with a sense of relief.

Did it really matter this much to him?

Did he really like Unown that much?
[break][break]
They were interesting pokémon, and he had always been fond of Psychic types, but in truth, Mars knew well that the relief came as a result of his need for answers – of this unexplained connection he felt to them.

Of course, he couldn’t just go and say all this to ana fell.
[break][break]
He straightened his posture, he looked at her, and he smiled – a calm and easy smile that was all too natural. He was happy. ”I do, actually. They’re important to me.”

Surprisingly enough, there was no need to lie, and when Notus returned to him with the Unown’s Luxury Ball between his little paws, Mars pocketed and processed to pet the Raichu for doing a good job.

”Well done, Notus.”

Mars seemed to metamorphosize somewhat, but in reverse. He slipped into this strange, hyperfocused, laser-like state, and then, after a beat, came back out of it. Back to his cucumber-cool base programming. Without missing a blink. Like nothing had even happened.

Sludgy anxiety began to bubble in Cyg’s stomach all of a sudden; she slid fingers across her throat where acid reflux was starting to pool. “Important to you, huh?” she said, torn between pressing for more info and shifting away from the topic. She let her gaze drift out at the view around them, still descending at a harsh angle; the sun was tucked in behind a cloud, but nearing it’s noonday zenith. They still had a ways to go. Surprisingly enough, she didn’t feel tired.

She did, however, jump and yelp, almost crashing into Martín del Mar , when another Woobat fluttered into her field of view; it missed colliding with her head by inches and she frantically waved a hand at it, like swatting away a fly. Elisabet jumped into action, hitting it with hypnosis, and it flopped to the ground and began to roll down the hill before Cyg tossed a Pokeball.

“Sorry,” she apologized, stepping away from Mars again. “I just have a habit of falling on you, huh?”

She winced.

What the fuck, Cygne.

Mars was, of course, well aware that his behaviour would probably seem strange to some – that most people saw no reason to care so much for a pokémon so small and so seemingly useless. They didn’t even look particularly cool or anything! But, of course, most people hadn’t seen Unown do the things he had seen them do, nor did they have countless words engraved in their mind in relation to the Symbol Pokémon.

”Yeah, they’re a–...”

He would have actually given her a proper explanation, but it was then that ana fell was startled by a harmless little Woobat, almost crashing into him as a result. In a natural reflex, he reached for her, holding onto her arm to help her steady herself. ”You’re fine. Woobat can be terrifying.” He smirked, harmlessly teasing her just a little bit before chuckling and letting go.

Lights flashed in the distance soon after he did. Red… Yellow… Red… Red… Green. A Beheeyem. What was it saying? No clue, Mars’ thing is Unown, not aliens. Either way, he nodded for Notus to go deal with it, and sure enough, an ELECTRO BALL got the job done easily enough.

They passed an elevation marker on a signpost that signified they were about halfway done with the trek down Jagged Pass. Cyg’s legs were starting to tire, but she was too stubborn to slow down or ask to pause.

Woobat are literally, like, flying cotton balls, with big heart-shaped stickers on them. They’re the opposite of scary. She straightened and took her arm back, placing a hand over where he’d gripped her and trying not to look sheepish.

“Anything’s scary when it comes flying at your head,” she said, trying (and failing) to cut herself a little bit of slack. She tugged the sleeves down on her jacket and watched Notus deal with the lurking Beheeyem; another weird Pokemon, but Mars didn’t seem to pay this one any extraneous heed. “So what’s so special about Unown?” she asked, momentarily distracted by the onion-crowned head of a Meditite floating nearby. With a nod of her head, her Haunter dispensed of it with another hypnosis, and Cyg collected it with the toss of a Pokeball.

”That’s a good point! I’d hate for a Woobat to get caught in my hair, it sounds nightmarish.” Was he making fun of her? He sounded serious, though… And truthfully, he was, because Mars sure loved his carefully and strategically tousled brunette locks quite a lot. Just as he loved every single thing about himself, obviously. Martín del Mar? Flaws? In the infamous words of Cher Horowitz: Ugh! As if!

Just as Cygne asked about Unown, another dark pokémon of huge blinking eyes appeared. Red ones instead of white, the sole sight of the Claydol bringing reminders of the one oscar clayton had had and of the horrors it had become. Claydol often seemed to remind him of that.

It’s why he nodded at Notus, leaving the Alolan Raichu to incapacitate the wild pokémon so he could get it out of his sight. Incapable of using electricity, it was a tough battle, but Mars allowed it to happen in the background…

Cyg cracked a smile at Mars’ joke about a Woobat in his hair. “Ha ha, yeah, we get it. You’re a pretty boy,” she snickered. The two of them walk past a Claydol that Notus is dispatched to handle; Mars doesn’t really pay it any attention, even though it’s an imbalance of type match-ups. Cyg watches over her shoulder, wincing when the wild Pokemon lands a blow, but forces her attention back to Mars when he speaks.

“Huh,” she says, letting his words sit heavy in the air for a moment. “I… guess you’re right. I just never thought of Pokemon who know, like, one attack as ‘deceptively powerful’.” She shrugged. Everyone had their eccentricities, she supposed; especially rich people.

Unlike the Woobat, the Combusken was not harmless. The Young Fowl Pokemon was aggressive and angry at the interlopers on its turf; no sooner did it leap into their path than it was attacking with a fierce double kick that Cyg and Mars had to dodge. The wild pokemon shot straight between them, digging a furrow in the ground with its talons; Elisabet floated up in front of it, large eyes knit in concern, before putting the kicking chicken to sleep with Hypnosis.

Cyg picked herself up off the ground and dusted herself off, throwing a Pokeball with one arm and checking the skinned elbow on her other with a hiss.

He smirked when she snickered, not really minding her teasing. ana fell was right, after all, Mars sure as hell considered himself to be pretty.

”Don’t you think so?” Mars even winked when asking as much, but in reality, it was not like anyone’s opinion on the matter would have changed anything for him. Jokes came easily and teasing was harmless, that was often how things were with him.

”Oh but Hidden Power is not just any attack, and they can do a lot with it. They travel through dimensions, you know?” There laid the basis of the true power of Unown, exposed for Cygne to see just as Combusken charged for them with a powerful kick. ”Arceus.”

An annoyance narrowly avoided.

He looked at Cygne to make sure she hadn’t been harmed by the pokémon, and it was then when he noticed a small Espurr that seemed to be trying to hide from the cantankerous Combusken behind a boulder. Was this Espurr the reason why this overgrown chicken was acting so aggressive?

”Hey there.” A soft and quiet call as he approached, crouching down next to the rock and reaching for the psychic kitten.
[break][break]
Admittedly, Mars had a soft spot for pokémon like those.

“Oh, undoubtedly,” Cyg snickered, relaxing just a bit. “You’re the prettiest.”

They reconvened to continue their journey; she flicked rogue pieces of gravel out of her skinned elbow while watching Mars gently murmur to the little Espurr. “Aw, how cute,” she mused aloud, secretly relieved he hadn’t had Notus go balls to the wall on the little kitten… thing.

“I guess I hadn’t realized they can travel through dimensions,” Cyg said, mildly intrigued. It was kind of one of those things that you never thought about-- the existence of worlds other than your own. Every now and then you walked into a room and forgot why and made the oh, that’s just the player controlling my sim canceling my action joke. But you never really think it’s real.

Right?

A shadow crossed over them as a peaceful Musharna drifted overhead; already seeming half asleep, it was helped along by Elisabet’s hypnosis, and Cyg collected the Drowsing Pokemon with a Pokeball as it stilled in space.

“So do you, like, study Unown, or do you just collect them?” Cyg asked, tucking the Pokeball into her pack.

Notus circled around him as if to inspect the wild pokémon, but instead of the violence with which the Raichu responded when commanded to attack, it raised a hand in a friendly gesture.

”Hmm… You could say I do both.” Mars responded to Cygne’s question while watching her catch the Musharna, the sight of it bringing reminders of the ones he had seen perish. ”I’m no scientist, but I’m really interested in understanding all about them and about the things they can do.”
