Winter’s cold has settled in Hoenn, seeming as if it will never fade away, but while many aren’t all that fond of the unusual weather patterns, in their frost Mars finds unexpected familiarity. Sinnoh is much colder than Hoenn, after all, and as much as he may deny it and think back fondly to the few years spent in Kalos, the blood that runs through his veins belongs to Sinnoh.

It’s the place where he was born, the place where he was raised, and although at a much different time, the same can be said for the Braviary that stares at him. Too bad Mars doesn’t know this just yet.

”Boreas.” One step closer and the bird spreads its wings in a display of its enormous size, standing its ground regardless.

How to get a wild creature to obey him?

Mars has broken the will of many pokémon in his time, he has gotten legendaries like his Zeraora and Urshifu to respect him and obey his commands, but this Braviary? Beyond the fact that it’s unusual, it’s as if wherever it came from, it has never seen people as something worth respecting.

The world must have something against him. The world must wish to remind him of his flaws; of the gruesome deaths he brought upon pokémon that trusted him and followed his commands – pokémon that may have even loved him once. If he were someone else, perhaps the sight of the Munna would be enough to deter him from wanting to get this Braviary to trust him in the way his Musharna had…

Too bad that this is Mars we’re talking about here.

Flaws? Him? Please.

When he thinks back to the way his Musharna died, there is no remorse. If anything, now that his memories have returned to him, there’s the thought that perhaps they should have done a better job. If they had been stronger, if they had been more powerful, they wouldn’t have died, and he wouldn’t have these damn brain bubbles. Blame it all on the dead pokémon.

The Braviary stares at him from behind its mask of azure flames, and Mars stares right back at it, unyielding despite the intensity. For a moment, that’s all that happens, their staring contest lasting a few minutes, but then the bird closes its wings, and calmly, Mars takes another step closer. This time, Boreas doesn’t back away or warn him…

Just like it often is the case with people, building trust with a pokémon can take time.

Mars knows this, of course, especially with how distrusting he himself is, and yet he still stands his ground, holding the Braviary’s gaze and refusing to give up. Be too impatient about it and the bird will back away and grow defensive, go too slow and it will lose interest…

It’s a delicate balance. One that suddenly finds itself broken by the appearance of a surprisingly temperamental Slowbro…

It charges towards him, attempting a HEADBUTT and leaving Mars unable to do anything more than let out a ”What the hell.” and try to step out of the way.

The Braviary, on the other hand, seems to think offence is the best defence, and the Slowbro finds itself being hit by an AIR SLASH, a battle cry declaring it should go away unless it wants to face much worse than that.

Thankfully, the Slowbro is smart enough to do as much.

Perhaps the Slowbro had friends. Perhaps the ruckus called to the attention of nearby pokémon. For, soon enough it’s moonlight that shines upon them as if to announce the presence of the Gardevoir that stands among the trees, staring at them from farther down the road.

Mars turns towards it, watching it as it raises a hand, and at that moment, perhaps it’s all the time he has spent training his own pokémon of the species that makes him realise what’s coming next. ”Shit. Boreas, up!”

The Braviary extends its wings, taking off just in time to avoid a sudden MOONBLAST. Was it his own reaction or had he listened to Mars? The answer doesn’t matter at that moment, for both of them have their attention fixed on the attacking Gardevoir.
[break][break]
Swooping down, Boreas hits his mark with a BRAVE BIRD attack, the wild pokémon instinctively choosing to heal when finding itself heavily injured. That’s a mistake, as proven by the HEALING WISH that causes it to faint.

”Nice work… Let’s get out of here, the wild pokémon are getting aggressive.”
[break][break]
There’s a screech, quieter than before, as if Boreas were agreeing with his words, and even though Mars doesn’t realise it at the time, a faint smile tugs at his lips as he reaches for a pokéball.
