It was that time again to battle it out with one of the gym leaders here in Hoenn. Believe it or not, the burnt scarred man actually missed the days of being a gym leader. Battling was his core and when he was a leader himself, that’s all he really did. Well… Except when the calls came in to protect the city his gym represented or others things that needed a gym leaders attention. But still, he did truly missed it. Part of them wanted to reapply, but the other half told him to push for higher.

Warm crimson colored orbs flickered over the expansive art museum, slowly making his way to the battlefield with this typical placid expression. By his side stood his beloved houndoom, standing at a whopping six foot seven and wearing a rapidash skull over her own. She let out a low growl, ruby gaze flickered over the stage terrain her master choice for her to battle in. Long arrow tipped tail twitched, nostrils flared to scent out the place.

“Hello,” Mav greeted politely once in the presence of the gym leader, “It's a pleasure to finally meet you Mister Belmont.” The man paused, bending at the waist to bow in polite greetings before rising to continue. “The name is Maverick… Maverick Ryder.” A grumble by his side remained him that she wanted to be introduce too. “Oh and this is Azula.” The canine did not bow, only casted a dark glare at the other human.

“Beautiful place you got here,” he added in, facial features still remained unmoved and flat, “Are those pieces of artwork back there really by you?”

Unlike the dioramas hidden in the Challenger's Gala, the traditional arena was far more plain. A broad room whose Poke Ball emblazed porcelain floor reflected gym leader and challenger like a mirror. [break][break]

Xander stood frowning in the middle of the room, his Volcarona at his side. "Xander is fine." anytime someone called him Mister Belmont, he thought of his father, @idris. A comparison that churned spoiled milk in his stomach and furrowed his brow. [break][break]

He nodded at both trainer and Pokemon. [break][break]

"Thank you, and yes, I painted all the pieces myself. I'll be painting you too if you win." hopefully, that wouldn't be a problem.

At the mention that the gym leader will being painting a portrait of him if victory is his, a brow rose in curiosity than anything else. “Ahh- I see,” the raven haired man lightly nodded, shoulders rose and fell in a casually shrug, “Sure. If you want. Doesn’t bother me.”

With introductions out of the way, it was time to get down to business. After all, Maverick was a fellow gym leader himself and knew the had a busy schedule to keep up on. “Azula here will be your opponent,” he mumbled, a quick glance at the canine and stiff nod towards their battle ground for her to step forward. The massive six foot seven hell hound stepped forward, a low dark growl rattled in her chest. Ruby eyes glared through her rapidash skull she wore over her own, fixed on the human on the other side.

Once in position on her side, she fell into a defensive stance. Lips rose, baring her pearl whites. “Do we get first move or do you?” He asked casually, knowing that each gym is different, “I’m cool with either.”

Xander answers Maverick with a nod, ordering Volcarona to attack.[break][break]

The moth flutters her wings and takes to the air, ember dust falling like snow as she dashes. She halts at center stage. The scattered specks of flame twist and turn around her in a wild dance, gathering between the pointed horns of her crown. They coalesce into a tiny burning orb of scarlet. [break][break]

The sphere doesn't remain small for long, expanding to the size of an oversized beach ball that rises above Volcarona's head.[break][break]

Intense heat washes over the battlefield, and Xander's forced to wipe sweat from his forehead.[break][break]

"Solaris, let it rip!"[break][break]

Volcarona conjures a small sun that explodes. this attack ignores type resistances and abilities. the weather becomes Sunny.

Volcarona screeches, and the orb above her explodes, sending crimson flames lashing violently at Houndoom.

The battle started with a bang, literally. The flying and bug type lifted into the air where his canine couldn’t reach even with all her might. It gathering strength and heat into a sphere above its head. Soon, the tightly packed inferno raged with intensity. So much, it sent waves of heat radiating off its core in an attempt to release the pressure. It caused the once cool air in the place to rise swiftly, soon forcing a bead of sweat to roll down the side of the burnt scarred man’s face. It was very clear what was about to happen.

“Try to dodge and counter with slide bomb,” the man called out to his canine, eyes on the sphere that swiftly expanded and soon exploded into millions of flaming particles. The man stumbled back several paces, fearing that he himself would get caught in the fire rain before his gaze fell upon his own creature to see the damage.

The massive six foot hell hound let a snarl ripped though her throat, her own ruby gaze watched her opponent. Nostrils flared, feeling the heat that the sphere casted. Long arrow tipped tail twitched when she hear her human call out a move, her keen orbs never leaving her opponent as the ball suddenly burst.

She took a few steps back, summon a thick vile toxic substance from deep with her gut. And as the shower of embers began to rain down, her muzzle parted to let loose said substance. She aim was to any hot particles that came close to her, using the SLUDGE BOMB to simmer out any of the flames that dared to touch her ebony fur. However, this didn’t extinguished all the flames that were hurled her way.

Despite her best effort, several of the burning embers did indeed hit her. A sharp sting of burning flesh made her wince as a few hit her pelt, a deep agony filled growl rattled in her chest as she glared at the flying insect. Azula didn’t hesitate when it was her turn to fire back. The taste of sulfur was already tickling her throat. It took no time at all for the flames to be ready. And with the aid of SUNNY DAY, the canine’s muzzle parted in an attempt to fight back. Blazing flames erupted from her mouth, taking a shape of a kanji as she aimed to hit the flying foe with her FIRE BLAST.
