It was a dark and eerily quiet night, not a cloud upon the starry sky. Though in the air a slight chill hang, tightly clinging to any all that dared to walk outside at this time of the night.

Johanna stood, just at the edge of the Petalburg Woods, behind her she could see the flickering lights of the city adding a stark contrast to the deep dark blackness of the forest. She was leaning gently up against one of the trees as she looked down upon her PokéGear and trembled. Even clad as she were in a nice thick jacket, and some pretty thick black pants, appropriate for the season she still felt the icy chill in the air. She wondered if it had been warmer to keep her blue hair flowing, rather than braided into the usual twin-tailed style she enjoyed so much, one little bang hanging energetically in front of her.

The light of her PokéGear screen gave her some measure of comfort in the otherwise creepy atmosphere. Upon the screen was a message, which she had read about a thousand times by now. It was the mission details. Supposedly Team Rocket wanted to expand their territory within the forest, and it was supposed to be done at night, as close to midnight as possible. She found that kind of odd. She figured they were probably just testing her willingness to work with them and her ability to follow orders. Given that she had to fly over here, which wasn’t cheap, she felt a bit annoyed by that thought and hoped that at least whomever they decided to team her up with would be some nice company for tonight’s mission.

She removed her gaze from the screen and looked around. Another shiver ran down her back. “Is it getting colder?” She mumbled quietly, more to herself than to anyone else. Not that there was anyone here yet, she most certainly couldn’t see anyone.

It wasn't the first time Ronnie had found herself in the woods late at night. Fire burned it's very brightest in the middle of the dark, after all, and what got darker than the woods at midnight, sheltered from the starlight by the thick boughs overhead? She'd be lying if she said she hadn't disappeared into Petalburg Woods to set fire to some dry leaves every now and then, even despite the care of nature she'd been taught so frequently in her childhood.[break][break]

Today, though, it was for a job, her Litten curled around her shoulders, holding tight to keep still while she walks. Ronnie could see a figure, illuminated by the light of their PokéGear, leant up against a tree in the distance, and so headed there to introduce herself - likely whatever fellow grunt was here also likely trying to make a quick buck - Rocket needed the woods and whatever, but at least they paid whatever schmucks went out doing their bidding pretty well.[break][break]

"It's not too bad" Ronnie speaks up, without much care that she might startle the other. She smirks, pulling her hair into short, messy pigtails on each side. "Unless you're letting it get to you that this place is all haunted"[break][break]

She gazes into the darkness of the woods, and the Litten on her shoulders stretches, her claws making tiny scritchy noises against the material of Ronnie's jacket.[break][break]

"You gotta flashlight or somethin' at least?"

She jumped at the sound of a voice suddenly speaking. She looked around only then to notice the other girl and her Litten. I suppose that’s my partner? Johanna calmed herself with a deep breath, and composed herself, trying to look cooler and laidback. “Wh… What do you mean haunted… Ghosts aren’t real!” Johanna stated though her voice trembling in its betrayal of her cool facade. “I mean, I know about Ghost-types, but… ACTUAL ghosts aren’t real!”

“And yes, I do have a flashlight.” She quickly turned off the bright screen of a PokéGear and instead fetched the flashlight in her pocket. She turned it on, and an average-sized cone of light beamed out in front of it. She waved it towards the forest to prove its effectiveness. “Do you have a Flashlight or will you be using that Litten of yours as a Torch?” Johanna peered towards the cat who seemed to be relaxed.

Her partner's reaction pulls a laugh from Ronnie's lips. "If just me turning up made you jump, wait until all the souls of the recently departed start getting to you" She raises a brow, letting the elastic of her hairtie ping as she finishes tying her hair up.[break][break]

"I've got a flashlight too, yeah. She's not as useful as she looks" Ronnie smirks, scritching her comfy little Litten's cheek with one finger as she does so. "We'd best make a start, hm?"

She doesn't wait for an answer before starting her journey into the woods. The air was cold, and considering how warm it had been during the day, that in itself was pretty odd. Usually even at night the air would be muggy in Hoenn - it was something Ronnie despised about the place compared to Johto. She may have preferred the chill, but it was still... odd.[break][break]

"You ever seen a ghost before? Not a ghost type, that is, like a ~~ghost~~ ghost. All wailing dead people and stuff, that kinda ghost." Her gaze flicks between the forest before her and back to Johanna, searching her face with the intensity of a schoolyard mean-girl.

Johanna blushes in embarrassment. “I was just surprised, that’s all!” Johanna pleaded. She wasn’t as much of a coward as she appeared, or so she would’ve liked to think. And so their conversation moved on to the Litten or Flashlight. Veronica didn’t seem keen on using the fire-type as a light source, and so had brought another flashlight. Alas, Johanna was given little time to make comments on it, as Veronica seemed all too eager to walk into the haunted forest.

Johanna hurried along, quickly catching up to the girl. “No, no, I haven’t.” She spoke, faint hints of nervousness in her tone as she looked from Veronica and out into the forest, which she illuminated with her flashlight. “But that's obviously because they aren’t real. Why? Have you?” She asked. She knew that tales of the dead were merely stories for children.

And as they walked. The Trees bustled around them, quietly, eerily. Small noises escaped from bushes and treetops from time to time, as if something was following them out of sight.
