Beau whistles lowly as he emerges on a small islet in the shallows below Mars' platform, withdrawing the Grit Badge from his pocket and placing it carefully on a low pedestal at the center of the sandy bank. "Nice job!" he calls up encouragingly.

The Dewpider, for his part, regards Mars blankly before uttering a parting retort that sounds not unlike an especially rude raspberry, leaping off the side of the wall and disappearing into the water with a "plip".

The final obstacle stretches out before Mars at the top of the wall: several rollers are staggered in a generally downward fashion, each resembling an especially long cylinder on a stainless-steel skewer. "This is the last one, brah!" Beau calls up encouragingly. "Just gotta make it down the rollers to get to me, and you're set! Just can't have your friend there pick you up and fly you down, y'know?"

He takes a few steps back, crossing his arms and regarding the other man with a cocksure grin. "If you want advice, mine is to go quick and try to step on the middle so you don't go slipping off." He nods, as though this information is the definitive key to victory, and cants his head slightly as he awaits Mars' response.

This obstacle features several horizontal rollers that form a steady descent down to the final resting place of the Grit Badge. Neither Beau nor his pokemon will interfere, but as he stated, Mars must negotiate his way across the rollers without allowing Urania to simply fly him down over them. Do so without falling (reaching 0 stamina) and the obstacle will be cleared!

At this point, just as it often seems to happen in his life, Mars really finds himself wishing he had brought one of his psychic types with him.

See, Urania is great, and when it comes to providing assistance, she’s amazing at making things go really fast, but if there’s a need to slow them down… Well, the most ideal choice is a pokémon that can actually use TELEKINESIS to get the job done. Alas, that’s not something his Noivern can do, and such being the case, she probably isn’t very useful for this last challenge.

He’ll probably have to do this one on his own.

The realisation makes him appreciate the gym leader’s advice, and so, Mars raises an arm, giving Beau a thumbs up. ”Got it! Don’t worry, we got this!”

Do they, though?

Mars smiles with confidence, but beneath, he knows well this won’t be very easy. As Beau claimed, all he can do is step at the middle of each roller and go fast, something he keeps in mind while taking a moment to catch his breath and stretch. Once ready, amber eyes fixate on the dragon that watches him as well.

”Alright, Urania, give me one last TAILWIND, but stay beneath in case of anything. You know what to do.”

Urania roars, and the reassurance provided by the winds she summons reaches him – a gale that tousles hair that is definitely quite messy already. It’s then that Mars rushes forward, and admittedly, it probably looks utterly ridiculous. But, he keeps going, doing his best never to slow down or lose precious balance.

Even Beau, from his position at the end of the course, finds himself ruffled by the sudden TAILWIND that Urania kicks up, the sand underfoot shifting ever so slightly as he watches Mars brace himself from upwind. When the other man takes off, stepping from roller to roller with fleet feet and measured balance, Beau can't help but laugh.

Not from the way it looks, no - Mars is perhaps a little windblown, but no less composed for it. The exuberance that Beau can't seem to quite keep contained despite his best efforts - impartiality possibly being one of his largest failings as a rookie Gym Leader - stems from the fact that, quite simply, Mars -has, in fact, got this-. The rollers shift and sway underfoot only for the briefest of instants before he's on to the next one, and he's somehow managing to stay squarely in the center of the course, so overbalancing appears to be nowhere on the docket.

In just a moment, he'll have his first winner, and he most definitely will not complain about that.

Alas, he doesn’t slip.

We could say fate was kind, that luck was on his side, but Mars being Mars, of course he thinks it’ll all a matter of skill. He had said he had this, and he sure did! He’s amazing! Incredible! The best! All things that are proven the moment sneakers touch down upon the sandbank where the gym leader awaits (although it’s not like he needed any proof of it to begin with, obviously).

Does he stumble? Yes.

Does he falter? Maybe.
[break][break]
Does he fall? Nope.
[break][break]
He stands his ground, managing to regain composure despite the initial lack of stability provided by the sands beneath, and just like that, without a hurry, he walks towards the pedestal upon which Beau Fontaine had placed his badge. Urania comes down from the skies as well, causing sand to splash in all directions – something to which Mars pays no mind. There’s a triumphant smile of self-satisfaction illuminating his expression; this is his moment and nothing will ruin it for him.

And then, just as he’s about to reach for the badge… he gets a cramp.

”...Fuck.”

Curse you, not-so-perfect calf. Probably should have stretched more before doing all that exercise, huh?

Mars takes a deep breath, forcing himself to bite back the pain because it totally wouldn’t be cool to complain now. It just isn’t like him, you know? He’s too good for that.

”I’m fine, I’m fine.” With this whispered mantra, Mars finally takes the badge, finishing the challenge, and when doing so, he offers Beau a handshake, giving the most perfect smile. ”That was fun. Great challenge! Kind of wish I could do it again sometime.” He laughs, pushing the pain to the back of his mind.

Beau claps his hands warmly as Mars manages to alight on the sand, giving a little fist pump of solidarity before straightening and adopting a more formal stance, gesturing to the badge on its pedestal. The moment of passing victory to Mars, of awarding his first Grit Badge to a challenger, is hampered only slightly by Urania's landing, kicking up a spray of sand that has Beau covering his face with his free forearm and mussing his carefully-swooped hair. Ah well, they'd told him to be prepared to make sacrifices in running a gym, so he had to assume that this is what they meant.

This, naturally, prevents him completely from noticing Mars' hesitation in reaching for the badge, and when he reorients on the challenger it is to accept the handshake warmly and clap the other man on the shoulder with a wide grin. "Congrats, brah, you made it! I knew you would, you looked like nothing in the world could have kept you from finishing in style! He jerks a thumb over his shoulder at the rest of the course, nodding. "I only have one badge to give you, and you got it, but if you ever wanna come back just to get some reps in or stretch your legs, the place is always open! 'Till then, I'll see you around, maybe."

And he might, if he's lucky. Or unlucky, as the case may be.
