To him, the Safari Zone is an all too familiar sight, but the young Persian by his side is not one that has seen much of the world ever since she hatched from an egg as a Meowth. That’s his own fault, admittedly, since he somehow has been even busier than usual over the past few months, while Penningar – cautious by nature yet seemingly completely imprinted on her trainer – would never allow for anyone else to train her or take her anywhere.

Even now, as they walk into the area where no other humans await, she stays close to him, eyes as rubies scanning her surroundings with a hunter’s distrust while letting out a light chattering sound. A sign of excitement, maybe.

”I know.” Mars pets the light-coloured feline, taking a short moment to scratch behind one of her round ears before walking further into the Safari Zone.

Little escapes the Persian’s gaze, and it’s soon enough that Mars sees her staring at a tree that stands near the road – her ears perking up and her head lowering as if attempting to get a better look at something while also remaining unnoticed.

After a second, he sees it too: a shiny Cherubi hanging from a low branch. Despite its colouration, it’s not a pokémon Mars cares for using one of his four Safari Balls on, but given Penny’s undeniable interest, it’s with a sigh and a slight smile that he gives a simple command:

”Go.”
[break][break]
And go the cat does, readying herself to pounce before dashing towards the tree and jumping to SLASH the unsuspecting Grass type. It doesn’t stand a chance.

Wild pokémon for good toys do not make, and as much as Penningar may have enjoyed tormenting the poor Cherubi (chasing it around and grabbing it with sharp claws, only to then let it go and repeat the cycle), Mars eventually gives the command for her to let it go. Reluctantly, the Persian does so, watching it run away before letting out a low meow while turning to look at her trainer.

”Come.” Putting a hand on the Persian’s head, he pets her before walking towards a nearby patch of tall grass. There, a Togepi hides, and as lucky as the Spike Ball Pokéball may be believed to be, its luck apparently isn’t enough for Penny to overlook the way grass blades shuffle and shift when the baby pokémon attempts to run away. Penny chatters, readying to chase, and moving his hand away, Mars lets her.

Into the tall grass the Persian goes, an IRON TAIL heavily smacking the Togepi once close enough to reach it.

This time, Mars throws a Safari Ball.

In a flash of light, the Safari Ball takes the Togepi into its confines, causing it to disappear from sight. And, for a second, Penningar seems surprised, tilting her head and staring at the ball before pawing it as if attempting to get her prey out. However, the Togepi doesn’t come out, and Mars just smirks as he watches the cat.

”Penny, bring me that.”
[break][break]
Loyal and obedient since the very day she hatched from her egg, the Persian takes the camouflage coloured sphere with surprising gentleness. She delivers it to her trainer as asked, and as if giving her a reward, Mars pets her a few times before continuing to walk down the path.

They don’t notice the Nidoran who also had hidden in the tall grass.

Chirping. That’s the next thing that makes Penny pause.

There are a few birds Mars adores, like his dark-feathered Braviary and even the Oricorio Pa’u that earned him Melody Miro’s Rhythm badge back when she was still Sootopolis’ gym leader. Now, admittedly, most birds are ones he cares little for, and while a Fire type would usually be of little interest to him, there’s a few things that make him pause:

A simple search through the pokédex app of his phone tells him that Fletchling’s evolution line has a rare ability that is exclusive to its species, and that appeals to the collector side of him. Gale Wings.
Shiny Talonflame looks pretty damn cool, and honestly, ever since beginning to train Boreas (his Braviary), the idea of having a much smaller bird of prey and getting into falconry has kind of appealed to Mars.

And so, with both these points in mind, the choice is an easy one.

A deep sound is produced in the Persian’s throat as response to the command, and with no time to waste, she runs towards the tree where the Fletchling is perched, deftly climbing as if it were the easiest thing there is. Sharp claws SLASH at the bird, and while it bravely resists, some ROUGH PLAY leaves it at the feline’s mercy.

Two down, two to go.

Just as Mars finds himself considering what to catch with the two empty Safari Balls he has left, another pokémon comes literally bouncing into view. It’s of a green so bright and vibrant that it almost perfectly blends in with the grass, and while those colours usually look great on flora, on pokémon they’re often… hideous, frankly.

A shiny Azurill is no exception to that.
[break][break]
Thankfully, Mars knows well that even an all too ugly shiny Azurill can eventually turn into a gorgeous Azumarill with fur the colour of dandelion blooms, and it’s with this mind that he watches the small pokémon as it bounces up and down on its round tail.
[break][break]
Penny, of course, watches it with something completely different in mind, and that simple thought is prey.
[break][break]
She chatters, her crimson gaze remaining fixed on the verdant fairy, and Mars sighs when listening to her, taking a short moment to give the command:
[break][break]
”Go.”
[break][break]
And once more, off she goes, but this time, the attack she uses is as if all of nature were responding to her call. A roar causes nearby plants to go into a FRENZY, striking the poor Azurill that really wasn’t prepared for what’s coming. Penny is the only Persian Mars has ever seen be capable of doing such a thing and it's as intriguing as it is amazing.

A hand reaches for the Persian’s withers, simple touch causing her to pause. She looks up at Mars, flicking her round ears, and when seeing him staring far off into the distance, she sits by his side, waiting for him to continue walking.

He doesn’t. Not yet, at least.
[break][break]
Not all that far from them, peacefully grazing in the field, stands a Ponyta of azure flames not unlike those of Mars’ own Incitatus before he had evolved into the proud Rapidash he now is. Incitatus, however, had been carefully bred and came from a distinguished lineage of champions. This Ponyta is as wild as they come, and perhaps because of it, it’s an all the more appealing catch to Mars.

”Stay here,” he tells the feline by his side, Penny doing no more than letting out a yawn before choosing to lie down on the grass. Quietly and calmly, Mars approaches the Ponyta – careful not to startle it because just about anything can spook a horse, especially a wild one.

Once close enough, he offers it some of the tall grass, hoping the Ponyta will approach and trust him enough to have a bite.
