Klaus frankly hadn't had anything better to do and, unable to sleep for once, had hauled himself out of the Lighthouse and towards the Petalburg Woods for one of his, admittedly, more unusual jobs.

A worker posted near the start of the Route greets Klaus when he appears, the young man blearily listening to her instructions. Wordlessly he pulls his phone from his pocket, typing in the address for good measure, before double checking it's correct by simply holding up his phone for the worker to view.

"I - yes," the girl says, a touch affronted when Klaus merely nods and takes the egg out of her hands. Folding his arms over its surface to hold it to his chest, he takes off down the path towards the woods. He should have gotten coffee before coming out here, he laments silently, one arm unwrapping from around the egg to rub carelessly at his eyes.

Klaus gives a little yelp when he trips over a stray, gnarled root poking up from the earth. Teeth gritting, eyes now wide, he stills as he looks down at his chest, breathing only when certain the egg hasn't cracked from the unexpected jostling. He really should have brought a basket or... Blinking once, Klaus digs through his pockets until he produces a pokeball and releases his Dhelmise. "Carry this," he mutters roughly, the egg passed to Hansel to be cradled in ghostly seaweed.

He should have expected to run into someone he knows. Of course he should have, because who would ever think that the middle of the woods would be a good place to be when wanting to practice a skill he doesn’t wish for most of the world to know about?

See, Mars had thought that the terrain would provide for the perfect challenge, with the way trees grow as if arbitrarily and with how make it almost impossible to have a clear view of his surroundings. He had thought there was no way anyone would interrupt this short training session when being so far from the main roads.

And yet, despite all of these assumptions he had made, lo and behold, the moment he decides to attempt teleporting to a spot not all that distant yet also not within his immediate line of sight, there is klaus anchoret – standing only a few metres away just as the admin appears out of thin air.

”Oh.” If only for a second, Mars, a man who always hides his true emotions behind an unbreakable façade, looks surprised. But, it’s only a second, and composure is regained the next, with it coming a slight smile that seems filled with ease and confidence. ”Klaus. Fancy seeing you here.”

On his shoulder, a Natu is perched, a pokémon he had been practising teleporting with in order to disguise his abilities when doing so in public, and one that surely he could blame for this abrupt entrance of his.

"Shit - fuck," Klaus barks out in shock, the young man's hand immediately grabbing at his heart at the sudden appearance of a voice, only-just noticing Mars just a short distance away. Well, he hadn't been awake earlier but he certainly was now.

Grimacing for a moment at Mars's unperturbed expression, Klaus glances over to his Dhelmise yet cradling the egg in swathes of ghostly kelp, a sigh then exhaled audibly as he notes its undamaged nature. Desperately wishing he possessed the foresight to buy coffee before this venture, Klaus then focuses his miserable attention on Mars, his eyebrow quirking at the sight of the Natu.

Well, that explained that.

"Hello..." His voice slows, brow furrowing minutely as he debates what, exactly, to call the Rocket Admin before him. Bastard seemed most appropriate, if slightly ill advised for keeping his operation going. "Sir," he settles on with obvious displeasure.

Lifting his hand to rub haphazardly at one eye, Klaus's voice croaks as he questions, "What are you doing out here?"

Klaus’ displeasure is, of course, not missed, obvious as it is, but if it makes the admin feel any sort of way, his expression reveals none of it. It’s not like he can blame Klaus, after all. He’s probably still annoyed about the whole ‘taking a picture of him puking his guts out during the S.P.E.C.T.R.A exam’ thing. People these days can’t take a joke, apparently!

Okay, maybe Mars actually can blame him. Just a little bit.

”Just going for a walk after work.” A somewhat counterintuitive answer, since he had teleported here. He didn’t mean work at the bank, either, since familiar with Rocket smuggling routes as klaus anchoret may be, he may just know of the facility that lies beneath the southernmost edge of these woods, right by the docks at Route 104 – a facility Mars himself is in charge of.

”What’s up with the egg?” He asks, nodding towards it after noticing the lighthouse keeper’s concern over it. They’re far from the hatchery that had opened on Route 118, and even farther from the city where Klaus lives. Is he taking it somewhere, then? To someone?

Brow furrowed minutely at Mars's answer, Klaus nonetheless keeps his thoughts to himself as to the man's apparent walk. Somewhere, in the back of his mind, tickled the knowledge there was something that better explained the Admin's presence, but damned if he was making connections this early in the morning. He's nonetheless drawn to the present at the question, his gaze casting sidelong to to Dhelmise who hovers nearby, a pokemon egg cradled easily in its ghostly tendrils.

"Job," Klaus answers, his voice rough before he clears it. With an absent motion towards the forest obscuring the path beyond he clarifies, "Delivering it to a house at the other end of the route."

Before Mars can question why however, Klaus pipes up as he begins to walk again, "Helping my dad buy new nets for the boat." In his youth, summers and vacations were spent working on his father's fishing boat, the pair a common enough sight in the Lilycove waters once upon a time. Now, Klaus kept well-away from his father's business lest he bring undue trouble to the man with his own questionable activities.

The day he and klaus anchoret had met, Mars had been out on his sailboat. So, it could almost be said that, in a way, it had been their shared fondness for the seas that had caused them to meet when they did. Perhaps it’s because of this that learning that Klaus’ father also has a boat sparks no surprise in him. Perhaps it’s because it sparks something different: nostalgia in the form of a bittersweet memory. One of his father’s own boat; of days as long lost as the vessel aboard which he spent them back when he was a boy.

”It’ll take you a bit to get to the other side of the route from here. Let me help.” Whatever odd jobs his Rocket subordinates take beyond their tasks for the syndicate are of no concern to Mars, but perhaps he simply feels like doing a good deed. Is he even capable of such a thing?

Whatever his actual reasons, he simply smiles, and after calling back his Natu, it’s from a Luxury Ball that a phantasmagoric steed is released. The proud stallion neighs and stomps, his ears flicking as if he were inspecting his surroundings, and despite the fact that his eyes remain closed, he turns to look at the stranger before him.

”Arion can take us there quickly, if you don’t mind a horse ride.”
[break][break]
Of course, Arion doesn’t look like the sort of horse that would easily let just anyone ride him, but that’s of no concern to his trainer.

Klaus's expression skews up into uncertainty at the unexpected offer of help, his gaze casting around as if expecting someone to jump out of the bushes to laugh at him. Beginning to speak, he instead jumps back abruptly at the sight of the Spectrier, his magenta-pink eyes wide with surprise and curiosity.

"What the hell is that," he babbles, his interest almost getting the better of him; beginning to extend his hand towards Arion, Klaus wisely halts his motion halfway and settles his arm back at his side.

Brow furrowed minutely, Klaus soon shrugs and then looks to Mars - if Mars wanted to waste his time playing delivery boy with him it was really none of his concern. "I haven't ridden in a few years," he admits. "It's like riding a bike, yeah?"

Wrinkling his nose faintly, he tacks on with suspicion under his breath, "A bike that can bite." A particularly hair-raising memory of visiting @annieoakley's family in Unova is brought to mind, the Zebstrika in question still harbouring a grudge against Klaus for failing to bring out a sugar cube after a ride. Klaus had twitched from the shock for two days straight.

Mars has half the mind to tell Klaus that ’that’ is actually a horse, but that would be cruel and mean and unnecessary, and Martín del Mar is rarely the kind of man to go out of his way to be mean or cruel. Nor is he the kind of man who’d do things as unnecessary as taking a picture of someone puking during what was clearly a stressful situation for them just for the sake of mocking them, obviously.

”He’s a Spectrier.” Is what he says instead. An honest answer given just as he fondly scratches the horse’s neck. It helps calm Arion, and perhaps even with having him accept Klaus’ presence, because extremely keen as his senses are, the stallion doesn’t need the grunt to step any closer in order to catch his scent. But, he would have to step closer anyways, wouldn't he?

”He can bite, yeah, but don’t worry, I’ll keep you safe.” Mars says it jokingly, and he even winks at Klaus when speaking such words, yet they too hold some truth, because after much training, Arion will allow most strangers to ride him as long as Mars is there too. Still, he doesn’t bother with explaining any of this. The admin moves to the stallion's side, getting on its back with practised ease, and after gently pressing his legs against Arion’s side to guide him forward no more than a couple of steps, he offers Klaus a hand.

”Come on, you’ll be fine.”
[break][break]
At this point, there’s actually a genuine smile.

Klaus hums an uncertain note at the gained knowledge of the pokemon's species, his magenta-pink gaze appraising despite the dark circles which bruise his eyes; horses, historically, hated his presence. He's too nervous, too high-strung, for an animal already prone to flight.

"Alright. Thanks."

The young man instead keeps his hands wisely to himself as he shuffles away from the front of the Spectrier to stand at Arion's side - he places a wide berth between him and the stallion's head. Heaving a soft sigh, Klaus rubs at one dark eye before wordlessly reaching up to take Mars's hand to swing up with rusty practice onto Arion, settling behind Mars to sit nearly on the Spectrier's hips.

Klaus leans back, hoping for a gentle pace, and rests his palms atop the Spectrier's flanks. "I had a college friend from Unova who used to take me horseback riding," he offers conversationally, some of the roughness finally leaving his voice as he starts to wake up despite his lack of sleep. "Their fucking Rapidash hated me," he snorts out, a half-smile hitching at his mouth at the memory. "They had to take me to the emergency room for burns, a sprained wrist, and a concussion."

Glancing over his shoulder to his Dhelmise, Klaus lightly clicks his tongue to get the pokemon's attention before directing, "Don't lag too much, yeah? Or drop that egg. Dad needs our help."
