Jessie made it to the agreed upon spot on Route 117 outside Verdanturf, looking around. It was quiet, a pleasant day, as she stood there. She recalled planting some seeds not too far away, when she and Uri were there observing the sparkling dust several nights ago.

The last of the seeds in her pocket were quick to enter the ground as she waited, wiping her hands off just in time for Martín del Mar to approach.

"Hey, Mars. Dragons, today? Didn't think you'd be interested in that."

However, her HYDREIGON emerged beside her, three heads roaring as it flapped its wings.

Route 117 happens to be the perfect spot for him to meet Jessica Manner – a middle ground between Verdanturf and Mauville City. A day off is never really a day off for Mars, and he had been working at home before the time came for him to meet up with his childhood friend and help her with some training as promised.

”Dragons,” he confirms, reaching for one of the minimised Luxury Balls at his belt. There’s the characteristic ’click’ when he presses the button at its centre, and in a flash of light, his teal-scaled Noivern appears. ”Why wouldn’t I be interested? This is Urania, one of my most loyal pokémon.”

When her name is called, the Noivern roars, a highpitched sound akin to a screech.

"Just didn't seem like your style, with you catching all those water-types and all," Jessie teased.

The NOIVERN made a challenging presence for her own dragon. The battle was nigh.

Mars allowed her the first move.

In an attempt to start strong, Jessie commanded a DRAGON RUSH. Her HYDREIGON grew a menacing feeling before rushing over to tackle the NOIVERN, hopefully causing it to FLINCH as well.

That had been the case at first, of course. Urania had been a pokémon he had acquired out of need, but quickly enough, due to everything he has gone through with her, the dragon grew to become a fundamental part of his team. Admittedly, Mars is fond of her, but this fondness is not the reason why he allows the Noivern to act without being given any instructions…

It’s that Mars sees importance in having pokémon who can act on their own, and so, he watches as Urania attempts to avoid the Hydreigon’s DRAGON RUSH, making it out of the way of two of the heads but not being so lucky with the third.

”Oh, not bad!” There’s a pained cry on his dragon’s part, but Urania is quick to retaliate, biting down on the neck of the offending head with the force of a SUPER FANG.

"Of course not. That was not my implication at all."

She understood the necessity. Jessie herself loved the fairy and psychic types, but she had learned to broaden her horizons when it came to different types.

Her dragon struck his with one of the three gaping jaws, earning a cry of pain. She grinned, looking confident until Mars's retaliated and snapped at her own.

The single head cried out, the other two whipping around and growling at the NOIVERN angrily for attacking its body. With the building fury, it used OUTRAGE, rampaging around the other dragon and attacking any spot it could see an opening in.

But once it was over, CONFUSION set in briefly.

- hydreigon is angry and used outraged, becoming confused after attacking

Amber eyes watch the battle happening in the airspace between them, Mars noticing how Jessie seems to favour powerful attacks with high risks.

There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, it can be an effective strategy and that much is proven when the Hydreigon’s OUTRAGE strikes Urania over and over again, but attacking blindly can also be a mistake…

Despite being hurt, Urania’s claws hold firmly onto the Hydreigon, dragging it down and slamming its heads against the cold and hard ground. And, as she does so, she summons MOONLIGHT – pale luminescence shining off her scales and healing her.

With a screech and a powerful flap of her wings, she creates some distance between her and the CONFUSED dragon, making it so it can’t easily retaliate physically.

Jessie knew the risks, and sometimes, the risks outweighed the costs.

This time, however, it seemed her HYDREIGON'S anger and impatience, and Jessie's own lack of command, cost the battle. She watched as the NOIVERN grasped her dragon and refused to let it go once it fell into its confused state. And then...

It seemed the battle was won. She still had a lot to learn.

"Come back," she said, her Pokeball bringing the HYDREIGON in so it could rest. She'd have to heal it back in Verdanturf.

"Your NOIVERN was impressive. I was wondering how my HYDREIGON would fare..."

It could’ve been anyone’s battle. Urania is far from Mars’ strongest pokémon, and definitely not one he uses for this sort of thing all that often – not since she had helped defeat the gargantuan Rillaboom in the dimension within the Tree of Life actually.

Yet, when Jessie calls back her pokémon, he smiles faintly, whistling to call the Noivern back to his side. “Well done, Urania.” A hand scratches the chin of the batlike dragon when she lands next to him, and it's then that Mars turns to look at Jessie. ”Your Hydreigon is really strong, it did well.”

It’s honest praise, and once it’s given, he calls Urania back to the confines of her Luxury Ball.

”I think that's enough battling for now, but since we’re here, wanna get lunch together?”

"It can grow stronger still, that much I've learned. But, it comes with practice sessions like these, right?"

Looking at the ball in her hand, she rolled it over before storing it away, secretly proud of how well her dragon had done in battle regardless of her lack of command.

Perhaps she was getting better at this thing.

"Lunch? Sure, as long as you're paying," Jessie said with a smirk, turning to head back into the city.
