Onyx sighed, the heavy noise echoing around the expansive cavern, disappearing into the rushing noise of the waterfall.

Above, Zia turned in slow circles, like a vulture over a corpse; her red eye glared down, peeled for anything that might move.

He almost tripped over the Espeon, rounding the corner of a large rock as the feline came into view.

“Careful, kitten,” he advised, swiping long hair behind one ear.

His smile was a dagger. He kept his eyes focused on the Espeon’s forehead gem.

“I share that sentiment,” he said, voice quiet in the gloom.

Zia hit the surface of a nearby pool with a splash. She dropped a glimmering Lumineon at Onyx’s feet, and he put the flailing fish out of its misery, sealing it in a Pokeball.

His raven quorked quietly, the noise echoing around the cavern.

“Hunting,” Onyx said with a shrug. “Though we may have gotten a bit carried away.”

Onyx grins. “She likes shiny things,” he says by means of an explanation.

There’s another quork, then a rushing sound and the cavern above is lit with blue flame; Zia’s steel wing is a silver flash in the air. Nearby, a Bagon hits the ground on its padded head with enough force to crack the stone, a thin slice across the front of its body where Zia’s attack had connected. Onyx collects this Pokemon, too, before it can regain its bearings.

“That, now,” he says, holding the newly filled Pokeball. He meets Loveless’ eyes, still smiling. “How about yourself?"
