He'd missed his old Mach Bike.

Although Angelo had replaced the everyday cardio goals with alternatives (jogging, swimming) there was something about the wind in his face and the burn in his calves, his thighs, that couldn't be replicated.

Time had changed things, however. Now cycling was reserved for the free days when the mood struck, when a piece of terrain called for grit to crunch beneath the wheels.

Such as today.

Beneath the late morning sun, he'd set off through the Safari Zone and it's ever varied environments. Enjoying the sweat tickling against the back of his neck and the way worries melt, no room for it when the satisfying ache of muscles begin to sing.

When the breeze, rushing past him, is far too competitive and spontaneous to be natural.

Angelo peddles faster. “Cheat.”

Invisible or not, Angelo knows that Latios is there. Knows that he's ahead of him from more than just the sensation of being in his slipstream.

When he's nearby it's like a part of him is unknowingly calling out, and he answers with the second verse. Their soul song attuned and complimentary, even without words.

“Y' think you're... so fast.” He taunts through laboured breaths, teeth clenched into an exerted smile. “Like t' see you come down here and use those noodle arms of yours.”

Angelo pushes his muscles to cycle faster, even though he knows its fruitless. His frantic heartbeat addicting even so.

A Cherubi waddles out in front of their path and Angelo throws a pokeball towards it. It's Deerling in the headlights expression sucked up into the capsule before it can be barrelled into.

Or, more importantly, gets in the way of their race.

“You're just lucky my chain came off.”

It's a hollow excuse that neither take seriously. They both know Latios would've won, either way.

With his old trusty bike propped against a path side tree, Angelo crouches in front of it to thread the chain back in place.

A Togepi waddles closer, hovering beside the pilot to curiously watch the process.

“Didn't know you had a long-lost cousin.” He muses towards his unseen companion. There's a smile on his face as a non-oil smeared finger reaches out, poking the Togepi's near identical belly markings.

Angelo has no other choice but to capture the Togepi after he's done fixing his bike, the egg pokemon having taken to sitting on his foot.

After washing his oil slicked hands with help from a more agreeable Wingull's water gun, Angelo wipes his wet palms off on his pants and sits on the grass for a while.

Ever so slightly, he reclines against Latios as the dragon settles behind him. Both of them watching a Nidoran pair playing in the distance.

Making a conscious point to keep his movements slow, fingertips reach out to card through the soft feathers upon the Eon pokemon's neck.

Beneath his touch, Latios tenses as Angelo's calloused digit snags on a strip of hardened flesh.

A hidden scar, from a life long ago.

“Do you mind?” He asks, voice catching soft in his own throat. Remembering the origin and pain of the wound that they'd now shared.

Latios doesn't move away.

So neither does Angelo.

They stay sat together until the sweat on Angelo's skin turns uncomfortably cool, the two of them content in their silent companionship.

As if they'd been bound for eons.

It's the chattering of a Fletchling that bravely comes to perch on the seat of his Mach bike, that has Angelo getting to his feet.

He waves his hand at the little bird, ushering it off the saddle while Latias stretches his wings.

“If you're looking for a free ride, at least sit somewhere else.”

Even though it rapidly chatters as if voicing its exasperation, Fletchling hops onto his handlebars.

“Thanks.” Looks like they had a tagalong.

The second leg of their cycle is far more relaxed. Angelo peddling fast enough to get his blood pumping again and yet casual enough to enjoy the scenery rolling past.

His gaze is horizon bound, soaking up the rolling stretch of green and the lake adjacent to the path, where Azurill play in the shallows.

He needn't see Latios to know that he was still with him.

Invisible or not, his presence is a reassuring breeze that warms him down to his soul.

Thinking back on a time before he'd been there now feels like a strange, unnatural dream...

One last push. One last hill to descend. Then their trip through the safari zone would be complete.

A Ponyta joins them as they speed down the crest of grass, unable to resist the race, its mane burning amongst the matching blur of the blue Mach Bike and the unseen dragon.

Angelo, despite being equipped with wheels, comes in last place. Although the Ponyta seems keen to continue following him, so it's not a complete loss.

“Later.”

He hums softly to the unseen entity in a temporary goodbye just before they reach the Safari Zone exit. Latios ascending into the sky, to no doubt meet with Latias amongst the clouds.

Gone.

And yet he never really leaves.
