Matias took the lead as expected. Given his rank, he was highly likely the strongest trainer of the two. Seeing as how Matias decided to summon his Rapidash, she felt it appropriate to summon her own choice of Pokémon

The Kommo-o appeared by her side. Its bright lime-green skin and pink scales are gently illuminated by the fires of Rapidash.

And so they ventured forth. Matias in the lead alongside his Rapidash. And right behind Elinor and her Kommo-o followed. And as they walked, the signs of a struggle became clearer, yet the silence stayed eerily the same. She tried to prepare her mind for the worst, but she feared it probably wasn't even close to ready to deal with the sights that would appear.

silence isn't good. it's anything but good. a small part of him is hoping that they hear a whimper, a cry, anything.[break][break]

at least not until they reach the supposed end of the cave. up ahead, illuminated by rapidash's flickering flames, is what he's come to learn as an ursaluna, a being not of this time.[break][break]

it's sleeping. behind it is what looks to be a body, still and likely dead.[break][break]

A sense of dread washed over Elinoras they moved further in. There was not a sound of whimper nor cries, nor anything. Not even the gnashing and slurping of consumption. Whatever it was, it was long done with its prey.

And that’s when they found it. A Pokémon whose form she had never seen before, but it reminded her a bit of an Ursaring. Matias makes a suggestion, and Elinor nods in response. Not wanting to verbalize it in case their would-be man-eater was about to wake up.

She looked toward Kommo-o giving it a knowing look. It readied itself, taking a stance that would allow it to charge at a moment’s notice. But it knew not what type this Pokémon was. And so swirling green energy enveloped its right fist for when doubt Drain Punch’ing hard enough would surely work.

matias has little knowledge over the ursaluna. but if it's anything like its counterpart ursaring, then it'll be an easy enough battle.[break][break]

so, on three, they attack.[break][break]

following the kommo-o's DRAIN PUNCH is rapidash with its MEGAHORN that stabs into the sleeping ursaluna. it abruptly awakens, roaring in pain before it pushes off the ground.[break][break]

but it's ursaluna's turn to retaliate. it rears up only to slam into both in a HEADLONG RUSH.

The anticipation was killing her as the Countdown was done. One…Two… THREE. Her Kommo-o sprang into action charging forward with not a care for its life. The green energy from his punch dug deep into the Ursaluna at first, and as the Kommo-o retrieved its fist, so too did some of the bear’s energy follow back into Kommo-o

Invigorated by the new energy, Kommo-o knew it could let the bear go no further. But it couldn’t charge up another attacking move quickly enough, of this it knew, and it couldn’t risk the possibility that the Ursaluna would simply attack the trainer behind him.

Crossing its arms in front of him, Kommo-o allowed a shield of light blue-greenish energy to appear in front of him. Digging its claws as deep as it could into the rocky ground beneath it. He took the attack head-on, hopefully providing enough of an obstacle to get past. Rapidash would have to do the attacking for this round.

the PROTECT forms, shielding them from the wrath of ursaluna's HEADLONG RUSH that collides against the light blue-greenish shield. it paves the way for rapidash to duck down, close the distance, and to once again pierce its horn into ursaluna's belly for a SMART STRIKE.[break][break]

the ursaluna roars, cries, then slowly slumps to the ground atop the human body.[break][break]

Kommo-o’s plan worked. It protected not only those behind it but created an opportunity for the Rapidash, one which it took seemingly defeating the Ursaluna in the process? But Kommo-o was cautious, maybe this was just another trick. It didn’t know this Pokémon nor any of its capabilities.

Slowly the Kommo-o moves over to the slumped-down Ursaluna, green tinting energy on its right hand ready to punch if danger were to be foudn. It prodded the Ursaluna with one of the claws on its left-hand checking if it was still alive and willing to fight.

“Thank you.” She wanted to comment that it was all Kommo-o but figured it was just a formality that didn’t need fixing. Rather she had to ask. “What is that Pokémon? It almost looks like an Ursaring, but different.” She watched as her Kommo-o did its test while awaiting the reply of Matias, all while trying not to think of the poor victim underneath the Ursaluna.

the ursaluna doesn't react to the pokes from kommo-o. it's likely fainted, deceased, or somewhere in the middle. matias is hoping it's just fainted because he knows Eva Morales would appreciate being able to study it.[break][break]

Satisfied with the lack of responses from the Ursaluna. The Kommo-o allowed the green energy to disperse. It turned to its trainer waiting for further instructions.

Elinor gave a small acknowledging nod. “Yeah, I’ve heard of them.” She hadn’t experienced them yet. And she would rather it stayed that way. “Did those distortions change this Pokémon?” She asked. As Matias seemed ready to get working.

“Sure can!” She walked over to try and help him move it. The Kommo-o seeing its trainer about to partake in a physical task, decided to join in, taking a firm grip on the Pokémon together with his trainer. Both trainer and Pokémon began to try and lift the Ursaluna, both making sure they were using proper form to lift.

The idea that something could change another creature like that scared her a bit, but Matias didn’t seem afraid of it. She figured there was no need to concern herself with it for now.

Instead, she turned her focus to the job at hand. Together they moved the Ursaluna. And though she knew what to expect underneath the sight still shook her. It was only when her gaze laid upon the cold corpse that it registered what had happened. She gulped, a sense of disgust washed over her, she wanted to throw up. But she somehow held it down.

“What do we do now? Call for someone, should we take the body with us?” She looked at the body, then to the Ursaluna then back at the body. She had never experienced death like this so close, and it showed, from the way she was ever so slowly giving in to the panic.

Matias sounded like he knew what he was doing. Of course, he did, a man like him had experienced it before. It reassured her somewhat against the wave of dread that it invoked in her. This could have been her if she weren’t careful out in the wild… Or worse if any of her Pokémon decided to have a bad day.

She allows him to tug her away. She finds some measure of comfort in the action. She tries to look away, but she can’t. Luckily her Kommo-o walks in between obstructing the view so she was forced to look at something else.

That’s when she hears the question. “Yes, I think.” She takes a deep breath. “I was just surprised, that’s all.” She said. “I mean, you hear the stories from time to time in the News… But, it’s something else when it appears right there in front of you.” She takes another deep breath. Calming herself as best she could. Though she couldn’t help but wonder if Matias considered her a wimp for being affected like this.

matias isn't privy to her thoughts but no, he doesn't consider her a wimp for how she reacted. quite the opposite, actually.[break][break]

"i was seventeen, i think, the first time i saw someone die. it was during boot camp. one of the cadets just...dropped. heart gave out on him."[break][break]

he still remembers the scene vividly. the sound of the thud the body made when hitting the ground.[break][break]

She listened to his story. She couldn’t help but feel a pang of pity for him. Seventeen, he had been nothing but a kid at that age. Yet she said nothing. She didn’t want to devalue his experience by chalking it up to age.

Though she didn’t feel the need to throw up, her stomach did feel both heavy and empty, as if there was some void in there which was just waiting to consume anything coming close. “Arceus, that must’ve been horrible.” She commented. Though surely he was way past it by now.
