Mauville houses one of the best hospitals in the region. As one of the most technologically advanced cities, it boasts that it spares no expense. That is why Blade brought her here despite her protests. She couldn’t stitch herself up, though.

Once she’s checked in, Blade leaves to take care of her pokemon, Mehira and himself mostly. It leaves Eva alone with her thoughts, lying in a hospital bed and staring at the ceiling. They’ve already reached out to MATIAS SILPH, her emergency contact. Normally, Eva would protest this too – stitch her up, get her out of here, she’ll tell him later. This time she didn’t. She wanted him here, no, needed him.

For the first time, she is scared. Fear is a foreign concept to her. She’s never run from anything. Today she found herself helpless against an avatar – a danger of the legendaries choosing the wrong champions. He let her go, she knows that. Why though? She might know why: To get a rise out of Matias.

She’s disappointed in herself. Not just for running, and losing, and being scared, but for the thoughts that came afterwards: She wanted to kill him.

Matias will find her lying in bed, lost in her thoughts, covered head to toe in a series of cuts and welts ranging from superficial abrasion to deeper lacerations that need sutures. Death by a thousand thorny cuts.

She’s lost in her own thoughts, hiding in them to pass the time as she lies int eh bed, tracing the lines of the ceiling tiles with her eyes. It’s his voice that pulls her back down to earth.

Her attention snaps over to the door, it hurts. A pain shoots down her neck but she doesn’t flinch. For a moment, she stares in silence, simply happy to have him there with her. As he approaches, she gingerly sits up in the bed.

Eva can feel the tension of his grip shift the bed beneath her, anger radiating from him like heat off a fire.

“I’ll be ok,” Right? She lifts a hand to gently lie it on top of his, she knows it’s a futile attempt to soothe the beast. Physically she will be ok, but mentally she finds herself regressing and withdrawing in doubt.

Eva looks away, mostly in shame. That’s twice now, twice she couldn’t protect herself and fell victim to Matias’s vengeful enemies. She’s been in the lab too long. It’s made her soft, fearful, and stripped her down to her basic training.

“It was, um,” she hesitates, no secrets, “That masked Rocket . . . Xerneas and its avatar.”

As he settles in, Eva shifts to wedge herself in the crook of his arm, lying her head against his chest. Her body aches, but his warmth is well worth it and his scent calms her.

She listens to his worries and gives an empathetic nod, sighing as well as she drapes an arm over his abdomen, “They’re relentless,” it’s worrisome, things are escalating quickly and now all she can do is lie here. She won’t be out for the count long if she has anything to say about it.

His laugh elicits one form her as well, a soft light accompanied by a little smile. Her head shifts to glance up at him, “Be careful out there . . . Please,” she knows he’s overworked, constantly on edge. That’s how mistakes are made. In his line of work, those mistakes can be life threatening, “But don’t have too much fun without me,” she grins, half serious.

Matias isn’t wrong, Eva can feel it too. Blade has certainly taken a turn in his feelings for Matias. A nervous laugh escapes her, “Yeah I uh- I don’t think he trusts you like I do,” not after everything that’s happened. Eva shouldn’t trust Matias either, but she’s a fool in love.

“Honestly, I don’t know if he’ll even want to go anyway . . . he’s taking this all pretty hard,” first KING WAYLAND and now bryan delarosa. He’s never failed so often at his duties, “He knew exactly what to do,” she’s referring to Bryan now, and Xerneas, “He fairy locked us, disabled Blade’s protect and teleport, trapped us in a thorny cage,” she shifts to hold Matias tighter, the unfamiliar and unsettling fear sinking back into her bones, “I was scared,” she admits softly, ashamed to share it. Helpless. Pathetic.

matias shrugs. he's not too bothered by it because the feeling is mutual. he doesn't trust blade any more than the psychic-type trusts him. he'd leave the gallade to die if he ever had the chance to. sorry, eva.[break][break]

Little does Matias know, the way he holds her tighter does sooth some of her fears. He has always been her rock, and despite how independent she acts, she needs him there. She always has, even in Kanto before she left. Leaving him was like leaving a little part of her. She never realized it until she found him here in Hoenn.

“It’s not your fault, no need to be sorry,” sure, he antagonized Bryan, and perhaps that had something to do with the severity of the attack, but Eva has been dealing with him since before Matias. It was only a matter of time before her nemesis caught her with her back against the wall. He knew exactly what to do.

At the question, Eva shifts uncomfortably and glances up at him with a raised brow. It’s hard not to take personally, but being the reasonable one in this relationship she understands why he asks. Between King and Bryan, she has also failed miserably at defending herself. Both situations were a cocktail of perfect timing, “I’ll be ok,” she says, rejecting the offer, “I just need to diversify, I think. Maybe get out of the lab and back to training some more,” Research has made her soft, “It was just the perfect, shitty situation.”
