he'd worn his best suit for this outing, or, one of them at least. speculations and rumors had run amok in his absence, worsened when his eventual return wouldn't be entirely whole. he needed to show them that despite his loss, he hadn't changed.

gabriel's domineering sense of self was put more at ease here among the high-rollers and wealthy. a large man, his presence was a beacon that called forth dozens of eyes. he returned none of them as he glided across the carpeted floor.

Of course Elisabeth recognised GABRIEL BLACK. She'd never met him before now, but she kept herself informed on politics, like any diligent civilian.

Even if she was decidedly not a civilian at all in her private affiliations.

A former member of Kalosian nobility, Elisabeth fit in the glittering scene of the high-end casino as comfortably as a knife between the ribs, dressed in a sleek high-slit gown as red as the roses she sold in daylight hours. She'd playfully placed several of the flowers in her immaculately wound plaits of golden hair, her earrings twinkling in the light of the chandelier overhead as she turned to see the man now seated next to her.

"You're just in time," she murmured to him, an eyebrow lifted as the roulette began to spin. "I've put my bets on black. You?"

The florist had already made a tidy sum at the slots, following precise orders to ensure a rigged payout of immensely satisfying proportions. To evade suspicion, however, a certain amount of that was set aside to be gambled back to the house.

Roulette was a game of chance, ensuring a certain amount of predictable losses. Elisabeth was content to wait hers out, until it was time to depart.

Although curiosity about the upper echelons of Hoenn's council made her briefly entertain the idea of lingering longer.

a voice, petite but not lacking conviction, rises from the seat next to him. There, was a woman of exquisite taste and sense of presence; her red dress as eye catching as it was dazzling.

"Black - that's a fine choice. I'll make the same." on the table the dice are pushed to him, and he scoops them up in one hand.

"i do believe I've used all my luck getting this seat, so-" he holds the dice in an open palm in front of her. "-perhaps a breathe of your good luck?"

whether or not she blew on it, he'd smile and toss the dice.

"My, spent your luck already? Well, that won't do. What sort of citizen would I be to leave a councilman defenseless in a place like this one?"

Keen amusement sparkled in her emerald eyes, and Elisabeth leaned forward with her chin delicately perched on her hand. "What precious little good fortune I have I'm happy to share with you," she said with a small smile, and obligingly blew on the dice.

She could sense the stares of others at the table, drawn as if by some magnetic force to the man by her side. Reputations had a way of drawing eyes, and GABRIEL BLACK had a particularly high-profile one of those. The vultures in the media had only worsened it, and Elisabeth had sympathy enough for anyone in that position.

Perhaps years of being married to a CEO had numbed Elisabeth herself to the sparkle and splendour of speaking to the rich and powerful. In the end, she discovered the way to deal with influential people was rather simple:

To act at ease, while silently keeping your wits about you.

"You put a good deal of faith in Lady Luck," she said as the die rattled and rolled, ultimately landing on a 1. "It looks like we are betting on odds, then."

Her smiled widened into something conspiratorial and devious as the word 'we' left her lips. Why not? She had, quite literally, nothing to lose.

The croupier spun the wheel as the rest of the table made their bets, the faint 'click' of the device slowing until finally landing on a number:

Its color? Black.

"Alas for my luck. However your name is paying dividends already, Mr. Black," Elisabeth said with a slight laugh. "Mine is Elisabeth, by the way. Elisabeth Fiorelli."

the result wasn't surprising in the least, and garnered a small chuckle from the man. he'd been betting on odds for the vast majority of his life. what difference was there now?

It was an old song, this little game of theirs: the mysterious woman dressed to the nines in the casino, seated next to the powerful man spending money he could afford to lose.

Elisabeth enjoyed this, the predictability of their little tête-à-tête. She played her part in it like any good actress, once more giving luck she didn't have to the die of a man whose own path in life hadn't gone quite as desired.

The die settled as it fell, the result determining their mutual bet. And with it, the wheel spun, too:

The result didn't matter, of course. It was just another way for them both to pass the time.

"What brings you here tonight?" Elisabeth asked GABRIEL BLACK, her glance cutting to his. Publicity, she privately suspected. Although she doubted it would be his given answer. "An escape from the havoc that is current politics, I wonder?"

With the world supposedly on the brink of a meteor's impact, they were all gambling their fates, to some degree.

"Perhaps you are new to it, but I can only think of one person whose tenure exceeds yours at present on the council." Gathering her chips with a graceful sweep of her hand, the blonde continued blithely, "Even so, far be it from me to dissuade a politician from modesty. Egos are rampant enough as is in your profession."

While tonight was "R&R" for the councilman, for Elisabeth, tonight was meant to be a work outing. One she had completed, in fact. The florist pursed her lips at the offer to join him by the bar, the shouts of the other casino-goers fading into white noise as she regarded him.

"I have never been one to turn down interesting company," she said finally, allowing herself a slow, cat-like smile as she rose from the table. A hand gently alighted on his good arm, the movement smooth and without awkwardness as they made their way to the bar. Whatever stares the action invoked in onlookers, the blonde ignored them with a practised composure.

This dynamic felt old hat, in some ways. Familiar. Easy. Nostalgic.

"What sort of drink will you be having?" she asked as she seated herself at the counter, propping her chin on her hand. "I'm curious."

A statement that could embody their entire encounter, in truth.

he knows of who it is she speaks, so he sees no direct desire to put his name out there. after all, there were only two seated councilman right now anyways; he was actively searching for members to fill the remaining seats.

he muses a thought to himself silently as he walks, leaning against the counter of the bar with his forearm.

her curiosity was a natural one, so he didn't much mind. it was something usually unspoken; a right of passage in first meets, among some circles.

gabriel turns to the bartender.

"bourbon. neat." he didn't care the brand or quality, so long as it met the two requirements. "it was my father's drink, and his father before him. i always looked up to him, so naturally, i did my best to emulate him. many of the habits i picked up from his wake have vanished, but never quite this one."

the glass hit the counter in front of him, and he wraps a large hand around the warm glass.

To her pleasant surprise, he gave her more of an answer than she expected. It seemed only polite to return the favour.

"My father had a vineyard in southern Kalos, once upon a time. He often enjoyed a Cabernet Sauvignon with dinner."

She laughed slightly, the sound tinged with faint admonishment. "I fear it's made me terribly snobby about wine, however, so that is my birthright. I find most of what Hoenn has to offer in that regard disappointing."

How much of it was refined taste and how much of it was nostalgia she couldn't say. Perhaps both.

When the bartender looked at her expectantly, Elisabeth offered a thin smile. "Gin and tonic," she said. To her companion, as if in explanation, she continued, "That drink, at least, tastes the same wherever one goes." Stiff, bitter, refreshing.

The clear drink was placed in front of her, the sweating glass topped with a single mint leaf.

"À la tienne," she murmured in Kalosian, lifting it in toast to GABRIEL BLACK. "To your health."

"we all have our vices," gabriel muses, holding his glass to hers in salute and celebration. his voice only murmurs in agreement, and nothing more. the idea of toasting to his health, when he was clearly missing a part of himself, was too bitter a thought to dwell on.

"you'll be hard pressed to find good wine in hoenn," he says after taking a sip of his bourbon. he could dwell on the particular scent, and tastes, but most of all his mouth missed the bitterness. "most i'm lucky enough to find are keep in my cellar for a rainy day. though, those are few and far between lately."

Dangling her glass in her hands, a smirk teased at her lips. "What a cruel miser you are, councilman, to keep all the good wine locked away to yourself. I shall curse your name next when I find myself incapable of finding a decent merlot."

Although the things she hid in her own basement were far, far worse to admit to.

"I imagine you're running dry at this point, though. You're right: we've gone from rainy days to eternal monsoons in Hoenn." Her green eyes cut across the counter to meet his, an eyebrow lifted curiously. "Off the record. Do you believe the League is doing enough to meet these threats head-on?"

Public sentiment in general seemed mixed in that regard. The latest plans for the meteor published in the news divided the populace, with a healthy amount of skepticism at play among most civilians.

"I'll understand if you'd rather we discuss vices than work, however. That's what casinos are for, hm?"

but she's quick witted and speaks to the point, words as sharp as a razors edge. in response gabriel makes a grunt-like noise of consideration, raising the glass to his lips. it was a time proven tactic to consider ones words thoughtfully.

"it's certainly possible that more could be done. yet, we must gauge our resources appropriately. as much as the league wishes it so, the promise that we could keep the entire region safe is an impossible one to live up too." absentmindedly, he swirls the liquid in the glass, lips mused in thought.

"the league is bound by rules, and decorum; public backlash mean the making and end of careers, and the ruining of lives. as much as i'd love to pull the problems up root and stem, the collateral damage would be far too much." gabriel offers his companion a small, knowing smile.

"How generous of you, councilman. I may take you up on that offer."

Elisabeth didn't pretend to hold any great insights on the future of Hoenn, meteor-driven or otherwise. That was not her realm of expertise, per se. She observed quietly, however, and listened on the subject with rapt interest. Because the future did interest her, as did all topics that affected the trajectory of her own power, influence, and freedom.

"It's a complicated question, no doubt. One worthy of a multifaceted answer."

Her eyes half-lidded in contemplation as she listened to GABRIEL BLACK outline his thoughts on the matter, politely and distantly at first, but then with a sudden candor that caused her eyes to flutter open with faint surprise.

"Public outcry is a troublesome thing. You are right: being observed changes what actions you can take tremendously. Your choices can determine if you remain elected, or fall back into the faceless citizenry. I can imagine having your hands tied in such a manner can be frustrating."

She rested her chin on her hand, an eyebrow raised.

"So why politics, Mr. Black, given all the fuss that comes with the title? If it's not an impertinent question."
