annalise and Elinor Anderson had agreed to meet before dusk so they could set up before the bug pokemons' courtship flight. by the time they had canvassed the woods and found the perfect spot to set up, the sky had darkened considerably overhead. the last rays of evening light stretch red fingers through dappled spaces in the foliage, casting long, hazy shadows into the clearing the pair are standing in. annalise lowers her bag down to the grass at the base of a tree, bag strap slipping slowly from her fingers
[break][break]"hmmm," she hums thoughtfully, quietly, as she straightens up and appraises the canopy overhead. with a soft clear of her throat, she lowers her eyes to her mission partner and speaks: "so, the mission said we need to do this without, like, disturbing their dust."

idly, she wonders if ledian dust is similar to tree pollen. an icky thought, but the preservation of a species is far more important to her than any weird vibes she might have.

"any ideas on how we can go about this without doing, um, that?" annalise punctuates "that" with a vague gesture of her hands. she has a couple ideas sprouting, but she wants to hear elinor's thoughts first.

Going on another mission with Annalise was a rather pleasant prospect. That’s why she had so readily agreed to do it. This time trying to defend the Ledian and Ledyba from dangerous flying-type predators as they performed their courtship rituals, with the cave-eat that if possible, they had to refrain from disturbing the dust they scattered amongst the tree.

She looked up onto the canopies above them as Annalise asked a question. Clad in her uniform and a small bag still on her shoulder, she seemed all official looking.

“Without disturbing the dust completely?” She repeated for a brief moment before continuing. “Not without disturbing it completely. But I could let some of my Flying-type Pokémon keep watch in the sky, maybe even have them pretend to be predators. Maybe that would keep other predators away.” Elinor suggested before she turned her attention to Annalise.

“Do you have another idea?” Elinor returned the question to Annalise, figuring that maybe she would have some suggestions to make.

a small pout tugs at annalise's bottom lip as Elinor Anderson assesses the situation and concludes that, no, they can't leave the dust completely undisturbed. she clings to a remaining speck of optimism — as long as they don't totally scatter it, it's a job well done! [break][break]she clasps her hands together at elinor's plan, "wait, that's a really good idea!"

"my idea was, like, we intercept any predators before they get too close and, like, lead them away, but your idea is way better." they won't be stretched thin if they stay in one place and deter predators, rather than chase them around. "i'll have cotton candy help your team out!"

annalise returns to her bag, unzips it, and rifles through it for a moment. she pulls her hand out, two minimized poke balls clutched beneath curled fingers. in turn, she releases her altaria and her chesnaught into the clearing. [break][break]"okay, cotton candy — i need you to fly around and help eli's pokemon keep watch for any flying pokemon! try to scare them off without engaging!" she pats her altaria on the head, then turns to look eye-to-eye with her stout grass-type. "if any predators get past them, you're going to pin missile the shit out of them, okay?"

chesnaught nods slowly, unable to parse what "pin missile the shit out of them" is supposed to mean. altaria pushes off thin legs and takes flight with a few flaps of her wings, circling up and up and up until she pushes her way through a broken space in the canopy. "welp, i guess we can just chill until the bugs come out?"

annalise plants her butt on a rock and starts scrolling on her phone. overhead, stars begin to come out.

The pout didn’t go unnoticed by Elinor. But she didn’t comment on it. She didn’t see the need. Her smile grew wider when Annalise accepted her idea. While she had thought it a rather simple plan. It seemed Annalise thought it the better of their options.

Elinor gave a small nod as she began to retrieve her Pokéballs. She looked at the Pokémon Annalise summoned, they both looked healthy. It was nice to see a fellow Ranger taking good care of their Pokémon.

Four Pokéballs in total were chosen. She sent them out each in their respective direction. Then one by one began to manifest in their red lights. The first to manifest was a beautiful red and Yellow Talonflame, it chirped enthusiastically as it saw both women. The next to follow was two Pokéballs popping open at the same time, manifesting side by side. One a Murkrow the other a Rufflet. They both chirped in greeting, though neither seemed particularly enthused about the prospect of work.

Last, but not least the final Pokémon manifested. A Majestic Salamence, its blue scales shining in contrast to its red wings. It greeted Elinor with a low rumbling and a smile. She sent a smile right back, knowing not what the future at this point held for them. It looked towards Annalise, though its eyes were filled with obvious pride it gave her an acknowledging nod, any friend of Elinor was a friend of his.

“I want you all to patrol the skies. We got some Ledian and Ledyba to protect. So keep any predators away and as much as possible do not disturb the dust that these bug-types scatter upon the trees.” Elinor explained. Talonflame and Salamence eagerly accepted the job, clearly thinking they could handle it. The two smaller Bird-Pokémon are not equally as sure of themselves. Nonetheless, all four took to the skies, accompanying the Altaria.

“Yeah, nothing more to do than chill until something happens.” Elinor agreed, finding a tree to sit up against, and placing her small bag by her feet. A mischievous smile as she spoke the references to what had happened the last time they had chilled during a mission.

her partner is well-stocked with flying pokemon. annalise offers an eye-crinkling smile and a friendly wave to the first three that emerge from their balls, cooing at how cute they are as they peep their greetings. Elinor Anderson 's salamance appears last, large and intimidating. it offers its trainer a smile, but regards annalise coolly. it nods at her, she nods back — a simple gesture of mutual respect.

all five flying-types take off in a flurry of feathers and wingbeats, leaving the two earthbound girls and chesnaught in the clearing. the grass-type peers up at the canopy, watching the leaves shiver and hiss in their wake. annalise sits on a rock and takes out her phone, eager to fast forward through the wait by getting absorbed in watching short form videos.

warmth spreads across her cheeks as elinor echoes the sentiment. hm, yeah, maybe chilling is a bad idea, now that she's reminded of their last mission by the impish curve of the other girl's lips. arceus, that had almost been a disaster.

"actually — " she gets up and stretches her arms over her head. "you can chill and i'll, like, keep a lookout for our little bugs."
[break][break]
sometime later, in the deep of darkness, the hum of insect wings and twinkling flashes of light herald the beginning of the bug pokemon's courtship dance.

"look!" she whispers loudly to elinor and her chesnaught, pointing toward the bugs swarming overhead. did they have to be quiet for this? she isn't sure, but she doesn't dare risk it. her voice grows reverent, "this is so cool."

If Annalise took her comment as a jab at her for what happened last time, then that was unfortunate for she had not had any such intentions. It seemed she had taken it as such, offering Elinor the opportunity to chill while she would keep a lookout.

Alas, the girl would be sorely disappointed. For Elinor had no intentions of merely chilling while someone else did all the work. And so she joined Annalise on the lookout.

Sometime later, when the darkness had finally settled in. The hum of wings filled the air as twinkling flashes announced the coming of the Pokémon they were here to protect. Annalise was the first to notice them, loudly whispering it to Elinor. It was an awe-inspiring sight. Even Elinor had to admit it captivated her. “Yeah, I have never seen this many together,” Elinor stated. As the courtship dance attracted more and more Ledian and Ledyba to the area.

Meanwhile, high up in the skies. Elinor’s Pokémon soared about trying to spot wild predators before they got too close. For now, they had seen none. But it was only a matter of time before some unlucky hunter would bask their wings in their air space.

this is the type of ranger mission that fills annalise's chest with a sense of fulfilment. it creeps up her ribs, warm, as the bug pokemon flit through the night sky, silhouetted against the pale light of a full moon. sparkling dust twinkles as it flutters down, shining where it catches on branches and leaves.

much like helping baby tirtouga down slateport beach, there's something super wholesome about helping a declining species propagate and thrive. with big eyes full of sentimentality, she listens to Elinor Anderson admit she's never seen so many of them before.

"me neither!" she risks a glance at her partner, taking her eyes off the bugs briefly. "i'm glad we get to see this."

a flash of teeth. "and i'm so glad i got to do this with you. don't tell anyone at hq, but — you're definitely one of my faves."

her top three rangers are elinor, ollie morales, and Guillermo Marceliño — in no discriminate order. everyone else either lacks the bestie vibes or the familiarity to make the rankings.

the swarm swells in size overhead. a swellow perches at the top of a tree, warily watching the flying pokemon patrolling the skies. sole hunters have a difficult time mustering the confidence to join in the hunt, but a flock may not be deterred at all.

The two rangers were sharing a moment. Even as the focus moved from the fluttering love among the trees and onto each other. “Don’t worry. I will tell nobody at HQ, but only if you promise to not tell anyone that you are one of my favorites, too!” If only Annalise knew what an accomplishment that was, considering how stacked against her the deck was, between family and boyfriend there were few favorite ranger spots left to take.

Meanwhile, Elinor’s Rufflet notices the lone perching Swellow. The brave Eagle-Pokémon dives quickly, lunging for the bird Pokémon with its sharp claws. It knows well that one Swellow often meant more were nearby. It could not let even a single bird get the idea that staying nearby was a good idea!

the shared confession makes annalise's smile brighten. she knew Elinor Anderson liked her — well, liked her enough to go on another mission together, but the fact that they're mutual faves comes as a welcome surprise.[break][break]
"oh my gosh, really?" she gasps, raising delicate hands towards her mouth. "i'm, like, so happy you feel the same way!"

having ranger friends makes work feel less like, well, work.

"you know what — if we get through this night in one piece, we should do something fun to celebrate!" her suggestion is punctuated by a clap of her hands. "like, maybe we could go out for breakfast in the morning and drink mimosas or maybe, um, if we're dead tired, we could rest up and go to a bar tomorrow night!"

out of view, rufflet clears out the swellow in a ruffle of feathers. the sound of commotion sends a ripple through the canopy as less courageous birds flee into the safety of the trees. below rufflet, the leaves rattle against each other noisily before a flock of fearow and spearow burst from where they had roosted. the boss bird, an old, scarred fearow, lashes moonlit talons at the little eagle's body.

Elinor gave her a reassuring nod. A smile beamed brightly like the stars above, as she watched Annalise show her surprise. Maybe they didn’t share years of history, but small pieces of time, no matter how seemingly insignificant in the grand scope of things, could still form a deep bond. But perhaps that said more about how many bonds Elinor had than anything else.

“If?” Elinor said raising a curious eyebrow. “More like WHEN. You don’t think I’d let anything happen to a bestie, do you?” Her voice was joking, but in her mind, she knew that she would set the forest ablaze before anything would come to happen to Annalise, dramatic? Maybe, but would she be an Anderson if she wasn’t.

“You know, I would suggest both… But that might be a bit ambitious.” She chuckled

Rufflet was quickly overwhelmed by the older boss bird. Having not expected to be met with such backlash the Rufflet was at a disadvantage. But Elinor’s Murkrow was quick to join in the fray, making the fight a 2 vs 1 in their favor.

Both Talonflame and Salamence noticed the rustling. But seeing Murkrow head there to help made them figure that for the time being displaying their presence in the air took priority.

it makes her happy to hear it. her smile spreads from ear to ear, nose wrinkling with delight. "of course not! besties do not let each other miss out on a nice alcoholic bevy."[break][break]
the mission is going alright so far, so they don't have anything to worry about. and even if they did, she trusts Elinor Anderson to act quickly. just like when they had that little sharpedo ambush on their boat ride. [break][break]
"listen, there's nothing wrong with being a little ambitious." her smile takes a mischievous twist at the thought. "so, like, we'll go to breakfast, drink our little bottomless mimosas, and then, like, take a nap to prep for a bar crawl!"

elinor is right — it does sound ambitious when she lists out their itinerary out loud, even with a nap thrown in for good measure. luckily, they're just a two-person party so it's fine if their plans unravel a bit once the sun comes up.

overhead, the boss bird sees the oncoming murkrow and squawks to summon its goons into the fight. a smaller fearow swoops in to fluster elinor's rufflet further, while a handful of annoying spearow pursue the murkrow.

Happiness was evident on Annalise’s face, and with it, a sense of joy spread through her own body. This was something she had missed in her life, even before becoming a Ranger. Real friendship, not one based on wealth or political power. But simply friendship for friendship’s sake.

“So true!” Elinor replied. There was no way Elinor would be letting Annalise miss out on a nice alcoholic bevy.

“Well, if you are up for it, then so am I!” Elinor proclaimed, maybe a bit too easily. Was she bending to peer pressure or simply excited for the prospect of some girl-time with her bestie. Even she wasn’t certain.

Meanwhile in the air. Both Murkrow and Rufflet seemed to have found worthy opponents. Worthy enough that even the Mighty Salamence, with its arrogant gaze and majestic attitude, thought it wise to intervene with the bird goons. And so it flew down, charging at the boss bird to assert dominance with a ZEN HEADBUTT.

The Talonflame rolled its eyes, not letting itself be drawn into yet another brawl. Instead, it flared its wings, letting the fire burn bright like a star upon the heavens illuminating itself as a warning to anyone who would be getting ideas.
