aries, honestly, doesn't know what else fortree city was expecting. or what they're expecting her to do, either. it isn't like the city isn't already based in the trees anyways. which, in theory, should have made this whole thing a lot fucking easier. it wasn't, though, because as it turns out a lot of other pokemon were territorial; not to mention the nesting pokemon, themselves.[break][break]

if she could just find a good place for this current nest, closely guarded by a staraptor, she could be done with this whole mess. but the pokemon was already watching her intently, probably prepared to attack, and she didn't want to send out any of her pokemon now on the off chance they'd eat the poor thing.[break][break]

so, right now, the best she could come up with was trying to calm the pokemon first. which, for obvious reasons, would be a struggle all on its own. [break][break]

"any ideas on how to keep the staraptor calm?" it's directed to her partner in this mission, even if aries doesn't take her attention away from the nest. she's hoping her partner has some smaller pokemon; because, right now, most of aries' own would be too big to make sure the flying type doesn't go on the offense.

a staraptor glowers at them from its nest.

annalise bites her lip and stares back, hands on her hips. how is she and @aries supposed to convince a pokemon that their natural habitat — among trees — is an unsuitable nest location? she worries her bottom lip between her teeth, brows knitted, and racks her brain for a neatly-wrapped solution.

her lip pops free at the sound of her partner's voice, asking her for ideas on how to keep the staraptor calm. the bird shifts in its nest, eyes still fixed on the two rangers threatening its livelihood.

"um, yeah, i think i have some ideas," she says, flashing a likely-unnoticed smile aries's way.
[break][break]"i could have my altaria use sing and put it to sleep. this is probably, like, the least traumatizing way to go, but we'd have to work really fast because i doubt someone who looks like that will stay asleep long." she gestures towards the staraptor as she says "that". the stormy look in its eyes darkens.

"or, hmmm ... if my slowking uses disable on it, he can prevent it from moving so we can relocate the nest. but it will be, like, super duper pissed when we let it go so we'll need to get out of here asap."

"what are your thoughts?" she concludes, crossing her arms against her chest.

unfortunately for annalise, her smile does got unnoticed as aries thinks her suggestions over. both of them have their downsides, obviously, but aries can't come up with anything better. obviously, the sleep plan would be the best, if it even works; something tells aries that the bird type will resist sleep as much as it possibly can. the disable...[break][break]

it comes with it's own risks, obviously, but it could maybe work as a backup plan. "getting it to sleep sounds best. if we have to, we can use the slowking for backup. hopefully we won't, but..." but just in case they do. the staraptor, overhead, shifts its weight as if it knows what they're talking about somehow. aries really hopes it doesn't.[break][break]

"how long can your slowking hold the disable? if we can get far enough away from it, we can release it then." and if they could, the staraptor would maybe (hopefully) be more focused on its nest than the rapidly retreating "threat".

"yeah, true!" annalise chimes in agreeably. combining both options leaves less room for error. "i think one of us will have to watch the staraptor super carefully while it sleeps, though. if it wakes up and we're not prepared, well ... it'll be a pretty shitty trip to the hospital."[break][break]
she would volunteer herself to keep watch, but she isn't about to presume aries wants to be saddled to the job of moving the nest. regardless of who does it, once the staraptor is incapacitated, they can both work on moving it.

"i'm not sure, exactly," she admits, fiddling with her acrylic nails. they clack together idly. "i've never had him use it for something like this — but he's well-rested. they both are. so we'll be a-okay!"

bright as the sun overhead, annalise beams at aries. she has maybe too confidence in her team.

"where should we move the nest to?" with the way the staraptor is looking at them, annalise wants to get every step of this plan squared away before any pokemon are called out.

"it'd be for the best. for it, too." danger aside, if the staraptor woke up with no clue of where its nest was, calming it down long enough would probably be next to impossible if they weren't careful. and, honestly, she doesn't want to deal with any potential hospital trips before she's been in hoenn for a month.[break][break]

are they bound to happen, in her line of work and missions? yes, but that doesn't mean she's not going to avoid it while she can.[break][break]

"as long as you think it'll be okay." they aren't about to outright judge annalise's team, especially when they only really have pokemon that would work better for defense if they need it, but the fact that their partner's team hasn't done anything like this doesn't do much in terms of boosting confidence.[break][break]

at the question of where they're going to be moving the nest, aries hesitates, searching for the tree she had marked out in her memory, before pointing towards a taller one. "it isn't the best, but it's really all we have on such short notice." she admits, with a sigh. "i couldn't tell much, but it doesn't seem like it's too close to any other territory."[break][break]

"do you want to watch the staraptor or try to move the nest? i'm okay doing either."

"i promise it'll be okay," annalise says firmly, looking at the side of @aries face with eyes full of sincerity. "they won't let me get hurt and i won't let you get hurt! and i won't let the staraptor get hurt either, of course!"

her gaze follows their index finger to a tall tree further from civilization. she nods, confident that they were as thorough with their survey as they could've been with so little time. "i think it looks like a pretty good spot. staraptor will love it. once it's gotten over wanting to kill us, at least."
[break][break]
aries tells her they don't care how the work is split up, resting the decision on annalise's shoulders. she bites her bottom lip, looking up at the staraptor and then back at her partner. the choice comes after a fleeting moment of ambivalence. "i'll move the nest!"
[break][break]
she doesn't think she can bear the guilt if aries gets hurt, so this option is more appealing, albeit labor-intensive.
[break][break]
"i'll take my altaria and get things set up. once i give you the signal, you can come up and join me. if you see, like, any movement, please tell my slowking to use disable. if that happens, we can, um, we can both work on moving the nest." but hopefully sleep will be enough.
[break][break]
her altaria appears in a flash of light, wings unfurled and eyes lowered to avoid the ire of the staraptor. she starts to sing as annalise climbs onto her back, causing the other flying-type to grow sluggish and droopy-eyed. sleep tugs at annalise's own eyelids as cotton candy pushes off the ground and rises higher and higher until she's level with the nest.

she risks a look. staraptor is knocked out, beak tucked into warm feathers. giving a thumbs up to aries, annalise carefully eases herself off altaria and onto one of the tree branches, her sneaker feeling out for solid ground before she dares come off her pokemon completely.
[break][break]
summoning her slowking on a wide, sturdy branch, she thinks her plan over and over, hoping the psychic-type will pick up on it through some kind of telepathic link.
[break][break]
shit, how do i move staraptor off the nest? she and aries hadn't discussed this part. a plan bubbles to the surface of her racing thoughts, inelegant as any half-baked scheme. looking toward her slowking, she mouths lift it with psychic. [break][break]
his gem glows, then a pink outline traces the sleeping shape of the staraptor. raising his hands, an invisible force lifts the bird slightly off the nest, just enough for annalise to wrap her fingers around tightly woven twigs and begin to carefully move it out of the way.

annalise still seems confident in her pokemon, despite aries' doubts- were they really that obvious? she still doesn't have much hope, but she isn't about to admit that. it feels rude, for one, and annalise has been nice enough- and, honestly, she doesn't want to manifest the worst somehow by worrying about it too much.[break][break]

"hopefully it won't want to kill some of the other pokemon nearby." obviously, it's a risky operation even if aries hadn't seen territory nearby, but she really doesn't want to have to deal with this again any time soon because of the staraptor's aggression. fingers crossed it wouldn't move its nest again- or be the cause of another pokemon moving.[break][break]

annalise offers to move the nest, and she nods- although she's prepared to pull out sable just in case something happens. if there's a fall, she trusts the dragon type pokemon to catch them in the case she's closer than annalise's altaria, even if it may not be the softest landing in the world. as she watches, though, the mission goes smoothly enough, and its just waiting for her signal that will be the hard part. hopefully. if things go as well as they have been.[break][break]

the staraptor, at least, doesn't seem to move as annalise begins to move the nest- a ruffle of its feathers as it adjusts in its sleep that causes aries to tense, but that's it.

she's in the middle of the painstaking process of moving the nest, careful hands guiding it out from under the floating staraptor without displacing too many of the intricately woven twigs, when she realizes @aries is still waiting for her. aw shit, she thinks, dragging a breath through her teeth like a ghost of a hiss.

annalise readjusts her grip so that she can take one hand off the nest. she waves her partner down, the gesture big and urgent. her mind swims with a school of hurry, hurry, hurry's as she puts her head down and gets back to work on the nest.

oh, shit. the thumbs up had been the signal. fuck. okay.[break][break]

they realize it as soon as annalise starts gesturing, pulling out their pokeball for sable. the dragon type isn't the best option, again, but it's really all she has, and sable doesn't seem to mind carrying her up. it all happens fairly quickly- the release of the salamence, some muttered words, and the carry to the tree branch.[break][break]

aries feels a bit awkward and too-tall on the branch, and like she's going to break it, but she's quick to head over to annalise anyways. as much as she can, anyways, between annalise moving the nest and the staraptor itself.[break][break]

the bird pokemon stirs, suddenly, and aries freezes. "fuck." it's huffed out, probably just loud enough for annalise herself to hear, and she moves to help annalise with moving the nest, half keeping an eye on the pokemon while she does so.
