bene was a creature born to fight. since birth he'd been gifted with power and grace few of his race could lay claim to. his seafoam green skin, and powerful SACRED SWORD was testament to this — if only he could use the arceus damned technique.

looking up at his trainer, bene scowls, remembering the human's words.

"try not to get into trouble, okay?"

he nearly scoffed at the much taller, but weaker, man. bene get into trouble? it'd take the entire creation trio to bring a graceful being like him down. well, them or his teacher, endo.

the old and gnarled samurott that trotted behind him — he'd 'volunteered' to escort his student — was the only creature that had gained even an ounce of his respect. despite the many injuries and clear old age, endo was still a master swordsman, and even if he was 'lesser', bene knew he had to learn from him.

so, here they were, two swordsman against the best of what this swamp had to show for it.

bene makes a splash as he dives into the water face first, cutting through the murky depths with grace and agility. his narrow eyes scan the sea around him, senses more heightened here than they could ever be on land. looking up and past the refracted surface, bene notes how his trainer doesn't follow him and instead props down onto his stomach and rests his chin atop his paws.

that suited bene just fine, really.

something dashes past his peripheral and, without even thinking, he lashes out with his RAZOR SHELL. the strike nearly cleaves the tail off of the passing fish who, under attack and heavily wounded, retreats further into the vast pool of water.

bene smirks, chasing after the trail of yellow and crimson.

bene abandons his chase shortly after, enjoying the thrill more than the act. the dewott spends some time at the seafloor, legs crossed as he meditates. something nudges at his awareness, a slight shift in the water, and he looks up to see a Dragon staring down at him.

beneath the scrutiny of one of the dragon-blooded, he tenses. every muscle in his body screams for action; to draw his blade and stand and fight. bene twitches and the kingdra's eyes narrow, a barely perceivable bubble of air forcing itself from it's gaping snout. so, he stills, controlling his breath.

after a few precious seconds, either bored or unbothered, the kingra moves off.
[break][break]
bene knew that if he wasn't already underwater, he'd be sweating buckets.

as the dragon departs, bene re-enters his meditation. he'd yet to earn a blade of his own; a biological failing as much as any test.

still, he works with what he has, forming a blade of pure water from his RAZOR SHELL. in the deafening silence of the sea floor, he searches for meaning; for a purpose, a goal, a mission — anything. desperately he clings for any reasoning at all, a facet of truth that'd guide him down the right path. the path to the SACRED SWORD was a difficult one. an impossible one. after an hour more, he gives up entirely.

angrily he sweeps the blade out in an arc around him and heads back to the campgrounds.
[break][break]
dozens of feet away the life of a marill is nearly snuffed out as the faintest, missed hints of a SACRED SWORD carve a wrench in the seabed in front of it.
