The talons of the Oricorio sratle the Machamp and she flinches, shifting her gaze to her shoulder. The blurry outline of the Oricorio is familiar, so she doesn’t shrug the bird off as she settles into her ROOST to rejuvenate and rebuild.

The Machamp’s thoughts are broken by the sudden pressure and pain on her chest. Suddenly, her world is filled with explosions and colors as the SEED FLARE explodes across her chest, forcing her to stumble backward as the Urshifu rushes forward.

As Syah falls, the Oricorio’s ROOST is broken. She cries out in surprise as she spreads her wings to catch herself. The sight of the Urshifu lunging forward is enough for Eva to act, “Return!” she points both spheres towards the pokemon and they disappear in a split second before they can be pulverized by the Urshifu.

Her shoulders sink as she replaced the pokeballs on her belt, “Sorry . . . she’s had enough,” she prioritizes her pokemon’s health. This is just practice, after all.

She’s knows him a bit better than that. What goes unsaid is hinted at in the disappointment when he says her name. He doesn’t need to say it, she knows.

What happened to her? She used to be so great, a different person when she fought against Rocket in Kanto. Sometimes, she doesn’t recognize herself anymore. She remains in place, her hands findings her hips, “I know,” she responds softly, shifting her gaze down to watch the toe of her boot glide through the grass, “So what can I do better?” That was the point of all this, after all. Wasn’t it?

he sighs. no point skirting around the issue when it's glaring and potentially dangerous.

"you fought differently when we were in kanto. you were resilient. fierce. you delayed the assault on pallet town long enough to save hundreds of lives."

it's what others would never have: perspective. he knows her prowess, witnessed it on many occasions, and the eva he fought alongside in kanto seems like a distant memory compared to the head professor who stands in front of him.

Matias voices her own thoughts, but it still doesn’t make her feel any less awful. Despite thinking it herself, she takes it wrong away. Her face pinches in distaste and her arms move to cross over her chest in a defensive stance. Her lips tighten into a thin line and she remains rather quiet as the questions lingers.

What happened?

She was thrust into a war that threatened the survival of her home. Hoenn’s current circumstances aren’t much different. In Kanto, she had so much to fight for . . . that she eventually lost. Perhaps the failure still lingers a bit too heavy on her shoulders. If she stays out of the fight, she won’t fail again.

“I think I’ve spent too much time in the lab,” that’s her excuse, and a semi-valid one, “Maybe I’m not supposed to be a soldier anymore.”

He’s right, she likely won’t have much of a choice. She’ll be expected to do what needs to be done. Would she be more of a hinderance than a help in that way?

She briefly looks away towards the hills in the distance before responding to the next question. It’s a bit of a struggle, she’d not quite sure how to answer it. They agreed not to lie, “A little bit, yeah,” maybe more than she thinks.

Kanto did have great trainers. Many of which she fought alongside, including Matias. For all their effort and loss, she can’t help but wonder if she made a difference. Or did she just make things worse?

He’s right. She’s been so stupid, so scared, so weak. The only thing holding her back is her own fear, the fear of failure and loss. At least if she fought and lost, she would lose knowing she tried.

If only she shared his sentiment, then perhaps her forced smile would have been a bit more genuine as he gently tilts her head back up. She has failed in so many ways. She failed to see the monster coming that terrorized Sootopolis although the data was there at her fingertips. So many lives lost.

will she stand her ground as she'd done countless times in kanto? or will she run?
