It’s too recent. Like an open wound that’s healing way too slowly for his liking, it aches. All the damage caused to Sootopolis, the loss of the Tree of Life, the loss of his pokémon, all the pain and suffering. Defeat. He had known it would happen, he had warned others, and yet there had been no stopping it.

But, even if that ache is still there, he has to keep going.

There is too much to do. Duties to fulfil. Today, as POG Bank’s ever so illustrious CEO; clad in his elegant suit and standing before the building that makes for Lilycove City’s new gym. Great timing, isn’t it? Good news to give to Hoenn’s people and a good way to distract them from all the horrors that continue to haunt the region.

Then again, it could just be a matter of chance. Just like the fact that out of all people in Hoenn,, the man he has first met as a driver is the one he will be facing as a gym leader today.

The gym was a space a renovated warehouse between the Lilycove harbour and Lilycove proper. The walls were lined soundproof and in protective pad, the ground was a slate grey cement with fresh painted white markers indicaing the pokemon stadium. Stagelights atop provided ample lighting even in the midst of daytime.

Rows of seats were gathered on either side of the gym, technically for public use and as a league standard for oncoming trainers to be able to participate in the viewing if necessary. However, they would be empty, for now, the gym was fresh and Callan made extra care not to delve too much into his musician career to affect his trainer one.

Still, he had been picking at his Stratocaster out of habit as he awaited his appointed challenger. As Mars arrived, Callan returned a cordial smile and placed down his Stratocaster. He remembered the last time he had met, he had attempted to get a book deal out of the man. That was a different man, and a different circumstance. "Hello Mars." He replied, walking to his side of the stage.

"Thank you, I'm still figuring out the paperwork." Callan smiled, "But it's nice, I enjoy battling, so once everything is set up, I imagine it will be smooth sailing." He flicked his phone out to the gym profile of Martín del Mar , "It says here that you have quite an extensive amount of badges, so for today I will use these two Pokemon." Callan unclipped two Pokeballs from his belt, and sent out his team.

"One more thing before we begin." Callan spoke, his eyes trained on Mars' amiable demeanor. "The educational purpose of the gym is to be able to adapt your Pokemon's circumstances on the fly and react as a trainer should during a high stress situation. Meaning, I have tailor part of this challenge to mitigate the strength of your Pokemon, both to compensate for the type advantage and the use of a legendary. Ordinarily, this would not be a concern, however, given the relative strength diffrential, I will have to see if there is a situation that I can put you into that is considered high stress. Regardless, the battle will go until either both Pokemon faint or that I have made a determination that the educational objective of the Gym Challenge has been met." Callan smiled towards Mars, "You may begin when you are ready."

”A commendable objective. Fair enough, that’s acceptable. Your gym, your rules.” The banker winks with that last statement, for as much as he is taking the challenge seriously, it’s also meant to be entertaining. He means his words: he’ll go by the rules set by the gym leader. That’s part of his goal here. Since, as much as taking on these challenges may superficially be about testing the strength of his own pokémon and collecting badges, it’s also about testing the strength of Hoenn’s gym leaders – about seeing what they can do.

Smiling, he too reaches for a couple of pokéballs then: two Luxury Balls from which his Urshifu and Starmie are released.

Yet, he does not command them to attack just yet.

”Do you mind if we film this, by the way? They often request footage of my battles when I do interviews, you know how that goes.” He chuckles lightly at that, but of course, recording the battle is just as important as the battle itself. There’s another objective there: good promotional material for when it’s needed.

There is a moment of silence, as Callan briefly recollects whether or not a gym challenge is considered a matter of public affair. "You may, if you wish." Callan replied, given that a Pokemon trainer has the right to publicize their battles, and that all Pokemon challenges are a matter of public record, there's no rule against recording a battle.

"Hmm, I may have to put up some conditions in regards to any paparazzi in the future though." He mused. He did not particularly enjoy the legal aspect of running a gym. He returned his gaze back to Mars, "Anything else?"

It’s all just part of his reason to be here, because the fact of the matter is that carefully edited gym battle footage does wonders to promote his good image. The people of Hoenn love their pokémon League and their gym circuit, they see people who succeed in the latter as both admirable and reliable, and to a man like Mars, things like those are of utmost importance.

There’s also other reasons why the footage matters, of course, but there’s no need to worry about those.

”Ah, true, paparazzi are never a good time.” There’s a sight, but he smiles all the same, not bothering with giving any details of why he thinks such a thing. All he does is bring out his phone, and after pressing a button, the Rotom within it awakens.

It summons another one of its kind, this one possessing a drone, and once they’re both set up and recording the battle from the sidelines, Mars turns his attention to his awaiting Urshifu and Starmie.

”No, let’s get this started. Oreius, Hesione, the stage is yours.”

That’s all the instructions his pokémon need. The gem at the centre of the Starmie’s periwinkle body glistens, making use of her COSMIC POWER to preemptively increase her defences. Meanwhile, the Urshifu chooses to strike, aiming a POISON JAB at the smallest target here: Callan’s Spinda.

The tiny, dizzy little hare called Spinda wobbled on its spot, seemingly oblivious of the oncoming threat of the lethal Urshifu's poison infused strike. But while most trainers would aim for the beastly Slaking, it was a wise move for Mars to target the rodent first. But it was not defenseless, its partner Pokemon supllemented its weaknesses fairly well, and while not perfect, the giant's large body belied its incredible speed, as it intercepts the Poison Jab by jumping in front of the Spinda as the Urshifu goes in for the POISON JAB, replying with a PLAY ROUGH to trade blows with the great bear.

Starmie's COSMIC POWER goes through successfully, improving its defenses significantly from any future attacks.

Spinda itself was not simply standing around, drunk, however, the steps in which it took were a delicate dance, each one a teetering, staccato summon for its true power: reality warping. With the power charged between its feet, the Spinda raises its stubby arms into the air, clapping once and using its psychic powers to SKILL SWAP Urshifu's UNSEEN FIST with its own CONTRARY ability.

+ Slaking intercepts the POISON JAB meant for Spinda and uses PLAY ROUGH on Urshifu. Taking damage if the trade goes through with a chance to poison.
+ Spinda uses SKILL SWAP, switching CONTRARY and UNSEEN FIST between itself and Urshifu.

An eyebrow is raised when his Urshifu’s attack is intercepted by the Slaking, but other than that, the banker shows no signs of surprise. When two pokémon battle together as a duo, defending each other is to be expected, after all. The Spinda’s SKILL SWAP, on the other hand, is much more of a surprise.

”Oh. That’s fun.” A smirk tugs at his lips, for UNSEEN FISTS is known to be Urshifu’s signature ability. Watching Oreius fight without it (and against it) would be interesting.

Even the Wushu Pokémon himself seems surprised, and it’s perhaps this surprise that makes it so he’s unable to avoid the Slaking’s PLAY ROUGH in time. But, what would have once been a slight decrease in attack power becomes a slight increase thanks to Oreius’ borrowed CONTRARY ability, and the pokémon finds himself invigorated by the battle.

It’s with a mighty roar that the Urshifu slams his forehead against the Slaking, with an IRON HEAD that has the potential to make any opponent flinch.

The Starmie has been silent in its corner until now, ANALYSING the battle, but finally, it chooses to act, and it does so by aiming a PARALYZING THUNDER WAVE at the Spinda while the Urshifu and Slaking are preoccupied with each other.

The Iron Head hits true, and the Slaking falls back in, flinching from the pain of the blow and leaving it unable to retaliate.

Likewise, without the Slaking to be able to intercept the Thunder Wave for itself, the Spinda is struck, electricity courses through its body, causing its limbs to feel heavy and weighted down, but it still manages for the most part to be able to move while paralyzed this particular turn. With a snap of its fingers, it COPYCATS the THUNDER WAVE, redirecting the electric current in its body and firing it right back at Hesione.

Oreius’ brutal quick thinking leads to his opponent flinching, and he takes the chance before it’s lost. A burst of blue energy is the only sign of what’s coming, blink and you miss it. It comes and it goes, fading just as a powerful punch connects with the Slaking’s jaw, then a kick, then another punch. A rapid series known as Urshifu’s SURGING STRIKES.

Meanwhile, while Hesione’s THUNDER WAVE had hit true, it does not stop the Spinda from mimicking the move, and it’s just like that that static fills the air once more, hitting the Starmie that had cause the same effect mere moments ago.

This time, it does not stop her, as made clear by the way the gem at the centre of her body begins to shine. Slowed down even more than before, she is last to act, and this causes her ANALYTIC ABILITY to empower and strengthen the POWER GEM with which she attacks the Spinda.

Surging Strikes connect!the critical blows land, but Slaking is not down for the count. It takes the blows, putting up a brave confident face to taunt the Urshifu with its SWAGGER. With its ability as CONTRARY, the attack of Mars' Urshifu lowers, dampening the blows as it lands on the Slaking. WIth its massive defense and HP parameters, even after taking a poison jab and the iron head strike, it is still able to continue fighting.

"Retreat, Enma!" Callan ordered, giving itself space, as it would not likely survive another assault from the bear legendary. Slaking SLACKS OFF, taking a breather to recover, its wounds rapidly knit together, steam rising from its illumina body as the bruises and bones knit back from the severe damage it had taken. Though it was still wounded, it would take much more than that to take down a Pokemon with a 670 base stat total. Still, he had to admit, Mars was fantastically gifted at Pokemon battling. At first, he had taken the man as entitled and oblivious, but he had shown a remarkable capacity to adapt, adjust and take advantage of the situation so far. He suspected, in part,that was why he was such an effective businessman.

As Starmie targets the Spinda, Callan issues his other order. "PSYCH UP on the Starmie Zenos!" Starlight Gems strike the Spinda's body, but it would not be as fragile as expected. The Spinda's body hardens upon opying Starmie's Cosmic Power ability, allowing it to tank the gems far better than it originally would, the beams strike, bouncing off the Spinda's deceptive ffurry body, dealing damage, before Spinda retaliates, using COPYCAT to return fire towards Starmie.

+ Slaking uses SWAGGER as Surging Strikes hit, lowering Urshifu's attack to -1 and confusing it.
+ Slaking retreats and SLACKS OFF, healing its wounds to recover from some of the damage.
+ Spinda uses PSYCH UP to copy Starmie's defenses, it takes the Power Gem from the Starmie.
+ Spinda uses COPYCAT to return fire back at Starmie.

”Hm.” Like a chess player considering his next move, Mars watches the battle unfold, his expression unreadable. Leave it to a man who owns a casino to have a great poker face, even if he truly couldn’t care less about gambling.

Callan’s irregular decision to suddenly give each pokémon two commands in one turn instead of just one does change circumstances and make things trickier, but it is not unforeseen. It just means having to play some of the cards the gym leader also knows he had brought with him.

”Oreius.” Two fingers gently tap on the elegant tie pin the banker is wearing, and on it, a keystone shines then, resonating with the gilded anklet worn by the Wushu Pokémon. The bond between trainer and pokémon proves itself true as it has done so many times before, and from it spawns mega evolution. SWAGGER's confusing effects are nullified, stats being boosted thanks to the surge of infinity energy within the bear.

Of white and azure, the Rapid Strike Urshifu stares down upon his slumbering opponent, ready to attack, but it’s then that Mars gives another simple command:

”Swap.”

Just like Slaking had defended the small Spinda when the battle began, Oreius defends the Starmie. He stands in the way of the POWER GEM, and retaliation comes swift in the form of a DYNAMIC PUNCH that is perhaps as unexpected as it is unstoppable due to the pokémon’s UNSEEN FIST – the ability now regained thanks to MEGA EVOLUTION.

And while the Slaking still slumbers, the Starmie also aims for her new target, but her choice is the cutting chill of an ICE BEAM.

So far, it has been an interesting battle, but he had expected no less of someone who had been chosen by the League as gym leader. Mars smiles just so slightly, always watching as closely as the cameras around him.

So far, Mars' battle had been going particularly well, Callan had a fairly good impression of his battling style.

To deal with the reduced stats, status ailment, and to remove the obstacle to his Unseen Fist, Martin decides to mega-evolve his Urshifu. "Nice." Callan replied, dealing with three irritating factors from the Pokemon while gaining an advantage for itself. Slaking is struck, however, it should be noted it wasn't sleeping, but taking a moment to recover from its wounds. However, that is enough time for Hesiod's Ice Beam to connect with it, it faints from the damage as a result.

The mega evolution's light spills forward as it turns the Urshifu into a menacing beast of blue and white, against a very tiny Spinda, the difference in strength was almost comical. Despite this, Callan's Spinda did have one mean to handle the oppressive situation. Callan's bracelet shone with effervescent light, as the Dynamic Punch neared its target, Callan calpped, once, simultaenously with his Spinda.

A barrier erects, just before the dynamic punch connects. It shatters on impact due to the Pokemon's UNSEEN FIST ability. DYNAMIC PUNCH breaks through, striking the Spinda square in the Torso, normally it would knock out a Spinda immediately. However, this Spinda does not take as much, as it had received all of Urshifu's mega-evolution bonuses and his stats, and in return, given the Urshifu the parameters of a Spinda.

Spinda erects a barrier that defends itself and nearby allies. Spinda can swap stats and boosts with anyone whose moves touch the barrier.

Now colossally empowered, the Spinda retaliates, sending a DYNAMIC PUNCH of its own against the Urshifu, using COPYCAT.

+ Ice beam hits SLAKING, SLAKING faints!
+ SPINDA uses BOOGIE WOOGIE! It swaps STATS and PARAMETERS with MEGA URSHIFU
+ DYNAMIC PUNCH hits! It's power is lessened by the stat swaps!

Callan paused, watching as his Spinda curls in dizziness and paralysis, both major disadvantages, in addition to the fact that his Slaking was no longer available for battle. Even though Mars' Pokemon are now unable to act, he'd rather not prolong what he had assumed was a foregone conclusion. His mind had been made up when Mars had used his pokemon's mega-evolution to disengage their issues.

"I call time." Callan says, as he extends a Pokeball into the air to recall his Spinda back into it. "Congratulations Martín." He begins, as he moves over to the gym participant on the other side of the match. Taking out a suede leather case, Callan opens it and hands it out towards the CEO of POG bank, with a gym badge of turquoise crystal inlaid with gold. "That was about the cleanest gym battle I've had, you successfully managed to handle the challenges I threw at you and remained on the upper hand throughout most of the battle. For that, I don't doubt your ability to be able to control even difficult challenges. The Stark Badge is yours."
