After combing the beaches on the mainland and coming up empty-handed in search of a good Water-type Pokémon, Shalin bit the bullet and took a ferry to Dewford Island. It wasn't too expensive, considering the distance she covered; she just did not like being cooped up on a ship for hours at a time. That, and she wasn't quite used to southwestern Hoenn's sea air yet. Regardless, this would be her best chance to track down a water Pokémon, whether it be stumbling into one on the beach, or luring one to the surface from the shallows.

Once she had disembarked in Dewford City's eastern port, Shalin made her way past city limits and summoned Flit from his Poké Ball. The young explorer swung aboard the Yanmega, popped her earplugs in, and braced herself for takeoff. Her fine, long hair blew chaotically about in the turbulent winds the large, vibrating wings created.

The Yanmega was ready to hunt much like a marine bird of prey, but had one distinct advantage; he could use his strong wings to create huge disturbances in the water, which lured aquatic Pokémon to the surface much like a passing rainstorm. She guided the giant insect along the shallows, coming perhaps a bit too close to some fishermen who might not appreciate the loud droning too much.

Shalin could have sworn she heard one of the fishermen call out to her as her Yanmega roared past. She barely heard one of them calling out to her, returning the compliment with a wave. "Thanks!" After seeing Flit draw a Pokémon as rare as Omastar to the surface, which the fisherman was quick to scoop up for himself, the explorer guided her Pokémon a little closer to the surface. "Flit, use your Supersonic!" she commanded. Flit was quick to oblige.

There was no particular target for the Supersonic attack; it was pointed at the sea in general. Shalin's hair stood on end as Flit loosed one of his signature high-pitched drones, his entire body vibrating from the force needed to churn his wings so fast. While Yanmega were known to use vibration to inflict horrible internal injuries on their foes, the only danger zone was at the point where the shockwaves coming from the wings intersected. From where Shalin was sitting, she was exposed to strong vibration that would leave her with a tingling sensation in her limbs, but it was otherwise harmless. If anything, the squinting girl looked like she was enjoying it.

The Supersonic attack was quick to attract water-type Pokémon, including a Toxapex that looked upset at being disturbed. It let loose a barrage of Spike Cannon in all directions, one barb getting stuck in Flit's underside and another passing through his left wing, creating a small hole on it. "Whoa!" she cried as she felt her Yanmega's right wing buzz at almost full speed to account for the loss of lift on the opposite side. With very little flight control, she was forced to land on the dock and join the fisherman there.

"I was going to say that Flit is better at it, but not after that! Let me make sure he's okay, then I'll take you up on that!" She turned toward her Yanmega's injured wing; there was indeed a small hole where the Spike Cannon attack had passed through. Insects' bodies were accustomed to wing injuries, and could heal out of them more quickly than other types of injuries. "My name's Shalin! I'm the wildest Pokémon rider this side of Hoenn!" the energetic girl introduced herself. "And who are you and this Remoraid?" She was intently listening while searching for more Spike Cannon projectiles, not taking long to finding the one the Toxapex had found its way between one of the loops connecting the Yanmega's saddle straps. "Now hold still..." she asked of her partner during her attempt to remove the pointy object...

A yelp came from Shalin's mouth as she heard Flit's mandibles slam together. It seemed like the removal of the Spike Cannon projectile was causing Flit at least as much pain as being struck. Once she had extracted the pointy projectile, she sprayed a vial of Super Potion toward the wound. While Flit wasn't the best patient during the process, she was at least able to spray accurately enough that the Super Potion would do its work over time. "You rest up, okay Flit?" she asked her favorite aerial Pokémon as she recalled him.

With the Yanmega back in his Poké Ball, she was able to remove her earplugs. "Now I should be able to hear you loud and clear!" she called back out to Theo, mildly lurching about as she walked toward his position at the end of the dock. If he was still offering the spare fishing rod, she would take it, sit next to him on the dock, and cast. "Great to meet you, Theo!" she answered, letting Kiara, her Litleo, out of her Poké Ball to stretch. The older cub tromped around to her other side, gently nudging Theo.

Unbeknownst to Shalin, several marine Pokémon, including a Croagunk, had nibbled at her lure while her eyes tracked a flock of Wingull! If her limbs didn't feel like jelly, she could have had a big catch! "Looks like some clouds are rolling in," she said, making idle chatter under the pretense that nothing was biting.

Shalin froze up when Theo asked if she was patient. "I...no." She tilted her head down as if admitting to guilt. "That's why I went over the water with my Yanmega. It's more exciting and still finds Pokémon around here." While waiting for her line to move, she shared stories of her discoveries at the Braviary's Nest northwest of Fortree. "The whole reason I want a water Pokémon is...I want to see all the remote corners of Hoenn. There's this place I read about called the Crystal Trench north of Mossdeep. Supposedly it's a lost wonder of ancient Hoenn. You have to have a big water Pokémon to get there because the only way in is underwater. I know it's--"

She stopped speaking when she saw her fishing rod start to slip out of her hand. Immediately regripping, she started reeling her catch in. She could feel whatever was on the end of her line giving her a good fight. She knew it was a good fight, too, what with having almost no feeling in her limbs still. With a yank, she at last drew her catch above the water's surface. It was a Feebas! Her eyes lit up as she threw one of her last remaining Poké Balls toward her catch. "This is almost exactly the type of Pokémon I've been looking for!" she exclaimed, her excitement well above even what it was when she was flying on Flit.

"It's out by Shoal Cave, and it's technically Hoenn's lowest elevation not covered by water...even though you have to go through a small underwater runnel to get there," she explained, going on about how she planned to use the Feebas she had just caught to take her to the Trench post-evolution. "The Rangers say it's so dangerous that they won't take rescue calls there, but I'll be going with a buddy or two so we don't get lost. I've heard it's a giant ice tower from Hoenn's ancient past!" Ice Pokémon certainly weren't common in a tropical region such as Hoenn; this would be one of the few places to get them.

Her sense of touch was slowly improving after weathering the storm of vibration Flit exposed her to; she could tell when she felt a cunning Pokémon stealing her bait at the end of her line and avoiding being hooked. As she reeled her line back in to reapply bait, she heard the distinct sound of flatulating, and much louder than a human was capable of. "Stunky!!" she cried, dropping her fishing pole on the dock when she saw the wild pointing its musk-filled tail in her general direction. "Run!" She tossed out two of her Pokémon; her Scolipede to do the actual fighting, and her Wyrdeer to carry her a safe distance away from the site that could become a mini-biohazard at any moment.

Tari lowered her horns and charged, attempting to skewer the Stunky with them. While the wild was able to avoid being speared, it was still stuck; it had landed between her horns and was flailing about on top of them, spraying musk everywhere! The vile liquid blinded Tari, causing her to buck and writhe madly! "Tari!" Shalin cried, wheeling Prance toward the small poison-type and pinching her nose shut. When she was within throwing range, she recalled the flailing Scolipede and tossed a Poké Ball at the wild.
