You know when you agree to do something without giving it much thought and then it turns out to kind of suck a lot, but you feel like you shouldn’t complain because, well… you only have yourself to blame?

Well, here’s Tam patrolling Route 120.

To be honest, it’s not all that bad other than for Hoenn’s notorious tropical weather (the heat sure is a beast of its own), and Tam had wanted to do this to make sure the wild Snorlax he had recently dealt with in the area isn’t bothering anyone anymore, but there’s so much else he’d much rather be doing.

At least he has always liked the outdoors. At least he has his Alolan Sandslash with him as he walks, the proximity of its frozen body providing some relief from the sunlight’s merciless warmth. But, he’d much rather be taking a nap under a tree or something.

Still, a job is a job, and despite his demeanour and unspoken complaints, Tam is nothing short of diligent when it comes to his work.

Shalin had left the Braviary's Nest with an amazing haul! She had expanded her team to include some much needed Grass-type and Flying-type Pokémon, and she had an entire gallery of photos to share with historians back in Lilycove City. The Braviary Clan would be the earliest known bird Pokémon trainers in history, dating back to 1000 BC. Best yet, she had helped Fortree's Gym Leader learn about his distant past! The relic bow she had taken as a souvenir was just a bonus. While it looked too frail for actual use, maybe she would learn to fire something like it!

Lastly, Kiara had evolved midway through their exploration of the Braviary's Nest, and was supercharged with enthusiasm she could feel from how much she was waggling her Poké Ball from within. She took one hand off her droning Yanmega mount's reins to detach the lion queen's Poké Ball and hold it up to her face. "I know you're excited to run, girl, but I have to get you fitted first!" the Pyroar's trainer said with a slight giggle. "Once you're all fitted, we'll go for a run across the beach together!" Shalin's reassurance didn't calm her Pokémon's emotions any. She clipped the Ball back to its rightful spot, her full focus again on piloting her Yanmega.

The moment Route 120 came into view, Shalin brought Flit below the canopy, the gale force winds currents his wings left in their wake putting a hole in the dense foliage the two descended through. The larger-than-life insect could not help but run up his wings as though he was using Supersonic, stopping just short of actually launching the ear-shattering attack. Shalin couldn't help but squint and sound a whooping cry right as the shaking peaked in intensity. Her thighs were going to be feeling it when she turned for the day, but it was worth it!

As she turned Flit around to head to Fortree, her final pit stop before Lilycove, she saw in the edge of her vision an Alolan Sandslash and a young man around her age. She immediately set Flit's reins down and covered her mouth with her hands, the Yanmega interpreting the motion as an instruction to land and relax his wings. "Are you okay?!" she asked in a panic after relaxing her arms. "I had no clue you were there! I'm so sorry!"

Tam has seen some pretty crazy things in his life, especially since moving to Hoenn, and while one would think that perhaps these experiences have desensitised him to most strange events, the truth is that he has always been rather apathetic.

So, when seeing a young woman flying atop of a Yanmega, he’s not particularly shocked or surprised. He just watches, impassive as ever, and not even the loud sounds produced by the large bug seem to bother him all that much. There’s worse things in life. He works near Slateport harbour, after all, and let me tell you: noise pollution is no joke.

”No worries, I’m fine.” Is his response to the woman’s concern when she lands before him, and it sure seems like that’s the case. Tam is always just fine. ”Are you okay?”

Once Shalin was sure Flit was on solid ground and his wings were still, she removed her earplugs. "I'm fine; just wanted to be sure Flit here didn't blow your ears out is all!" The curious dragonfly crawled a little closer to the stranger, making sure not to run up his wings at all, lest his trainer lose her hearing. "Was just returning from the Braviary's Nest and it's an experience I won't ever forget!" She went on to describe the difficulty of accessing the location and what she found inside. She was clearly excited.

"Name's Shalin, the wildest Pokémon rider this side of Hoenn!" she introduced herself, not caring one bit about how tacky her title sounded. "What brings you to this neck of the woods? Not exactly on the beaten path!" she asked, oblivious to any official Ranger gear he might be wearing.

She talks a lot, describing her travels, so Tam does no more than nod along from time to time, for he himself has never been of the talkative kind. His gaze wanders over the treeline, focusing on the nearby bushes when noticing the rustling of leaves and the slightest hint of crimson fur.

”Hmm.” Is the only sound he makes then, resting a hand on his Sandslash and gesturing towards the bushes in question. The pokémon, of course, is quick to act, shooting sharp ICICLE SPEARS that cause an injured Zorua to jump out. Since it’s injured, Tam decides to throw a pokéball despite it not being the sort of pokémon he’d usually go for.

It’s only then that he returns his attention to Shalin Nariya, who has now introduced herself as such.

”I’m Tam.” He says, short and simple in contrast with her introduction, giving himself no titles at all. As for what he’s doing here…

”I’m a ranger. I’m patrolling the area.”
[break][break]
That’s all there is to it. But, after a second, he looks from the woman to her Yanmega and then back to her. ”Did you see anything unusual while up there?”

"Great to meet you, Tam!" Shalin replied, only noticing Tam's Ranger uniform when he mentioned it. "One of my friends just joined up with the Rangers not too long ago. Absolutely can't stand patrol jobs, from what he told me." It wasn't like she was much better at just watching the world go by. She had to be doing something at all times for her mind to not aimlessly wander.

When asked if she saw anything unusual, oh did Shalin have a lot to share. She pulled up the album she had taken with her phone and went over some of the highlights, including two balconies shrouded in clouds. It was as though there was an entire ancient fortress inside the mountain, with the ruins of a village at its peak. "They were bird Pokémon trainers back even before Apricorn Balls existed. Not modern Poké Balls, Apricorn Balls." She also showed Tam a green medallion with an image of a Therian Tornadus engraved onto it, though she had no idea what Pokémon was on the rare curio.

The sound of just Flit's tail wings buzzing startled Shalin. A split second later, she felt something latch onto her bag for about two seconds before the excess weight left. A wild Skwovet had run away with a clump of Sitrus Berries! "Hey! That was my last clump of those!" she cried as the dragonfly calmed down again, neither of them willing to chase the Normal-type.
