it's not-quite-dawn when annalise arrives at his apartment complex. bird pokemon chirp in the darkness, starting their day as hers draws to a close. slender fingers ghost over the railing as she takes the long way up the stairs, each step weighted with exhaustion. the night replays behind her eyelids, flashing into view with each weary blink. it keeps her away from sleep, just as much as cotton candy's fatigue keeps her away from home.[break][break]
annalise stops in front of his door, ranger uniform disheveled, eyes hollowed and dark. she stares at his apartment number for a long, contemplative moment. on any other day, she would have broken into his apartment by now, made herself at home on his couch, but today?

today, it takes her too much time to take out her phone, to frown at her appearance in the dark reflection in her phone, to find his name (GREYSON🤪💅) in her contacts list.

"hi." there's no sunshine in her voice when he answers, just a raw whisper into the speaker. "sorry for calling you so late. can ... could i come in?"

pulled from the void, greyson's hand clambers around for the vibrating block. lifting an eyelid felt like staring into sun, as the phone lights the room in its UV splendor. so, keeping them closed, he brings the phone to his ear. luckily, he'd only dropped it on his once this time.

the voice on the other end is familiar, and it takes a solid moment for the deliriousness of sleep to fade just enough to understand it. his voice is groggy and groggy, but he forces himself more and more awake by the second.

"anna? are you outside? sure, give me a second."

a second turns into two minutes, as he fetches the remainders of scattered clothing. he's walking barefoot across hardwood, tossing his shirt lazily over his other shoulder, flinching at the wounds, when he finally makes it.

opening it, he gives her an appraisal with only one opened eye.
[break][break]
"anna," he swallows, feeling the dehydration sinking in. "what's going on?" stepping aside, he makes room for her to enter.

"okay," is all she can muster. her phone screen lights up as the call ends, casting her shadow down the gloom of the hallway. she lowers her hand to her side, phone dangling from the precarious tips of her fingers, and waits. a second stretches into an eternity, but she's too tired to pout and whine once the door finally gives way.[break][break]
the pressure in her chest builds when she meets his sleepy, one-eyed gaze. then her attention drifts — first to the cut on his lip, then to the scratches on exposed skin — and guilt rises like bile in her throat. she's so stupid for coming here, but somehow, it's still the least stupid thing she's done tonight.[break][break]
he asks her what's going on, close enough to an are you okay? to make her throat feel tight. part of her wants to apologize and leave, but it feels fucked up to leave him answerless after waking him up so early.[break][break]
"u-um," she starts, voice small and eyes rheumy, as she accepts the invitation he leaves in the doorway. [break][break]
"just — " the word catches. "i just had a tough night at work."

"i was at the, um, lighthouse." annalise moves closer to the couch, but doesn't sit. "a-and you live so close, so ... "

"i-i just needed someone to talk to," she admits, unable to stop her voice from wobbling.

greyson pushes back the haze of sleepiness, addled by the disheveled ranger at his doorstep. gone was the light, breezy personality of the woman who'd visited his gym. what's left feels more hollow, like something had scooped out the happiness, and the joy, and left only a husk.

finally opening the other lid, greyson blinks back the bleariness that consumes the left side of his vision. he puts on a small, tired smile, and allows her to enter.

annalise tries on a smile to mirror his own, but there's no light in it. it falls as soon as he turns his back to her. the effort to keep up appearances is just too much at this hour. she steps on the back of her heel and slips one sneaker off, then the other, then toes them both out of the way.[break][break]
"okay," she repeats, her voice high-pitched with emotion. for the sake of not bursting into tears, she wants to leave it at that, but she supposes she owes him at least this much: "thank you."

with some hesitation, she rounds the couch and sits down stiffly as he retreats into the kitchen. head down, she fiddles with her phone in her lap as a distraction, her pop socket making a tiny, muffled pop! and click! each time she pulls it out and presses it back in. her throat feels less tight, feels less like the everything she's holding in is going to come up it.

cabinets open, then shut, with mild rustling on the kitchen counter. normally it would be an average backdrop of sound, but for some odd reason, it all seemed... louder. was it just the way he was feeling, or was greyson more aware with annalise henderson over?

annalise stops fidgeting with her pop socket at his question. it floats over from the kitchen, carried to the living room with a waft of coffee. she doesn't lift her head at first — doesn't know if she can lift her head, afraid that the house of cards she's moved her stress into will collapse if she looks at him.

"oh, um ... " she risks it, peering up through her lashes at him. she still feels on edge, she discovers, but not so close to falling off crybaby cliff as she was before. at least, not until the issue gets brought up again. "milk, please."

"but — " annalise gets up from the couch, the pad of her thumb idly worrying the cheap plastic seam of her pop socket. "i'll pour it. i'm, um, like, one of those types, y'know?"

there should be a laugh there, punctuating her question, but it's uncharacteristically absent this time.

obligingly, greyson retrieves the milk from his fridge. it's one of those low-fat, 2% types, that have a deal more protein than normal. he sets it on the counter, giving anna a small smile as she stands to pour it herself.

"no, i get it. my dad's the same way." he was far, far worse, though. the type of person who'd lose his mind if you put your hand or arm, even accidently, anywhere near his food.

'your dead skin is dropping on my food!'
[break][break]
he holds back the desire to roll his eyes, not wanting annalise henderson to think he was doing it towards her. when she's finished, he pours some of his own in the prepared cup, and 2-3 spoonful's of sugar.

then, he moves to sit at one of the barstools, eyeing her.

waiting. patiently.

the sound of the carton being set on the counter summons annalise to the kitchen. she moves across the apartment like a ghost, footsteps near silent against the floorboards. she hadn't considered that greyson had been there when she showed up here — even though she probably should have expected it, he's a gym leader after all — but now she feels like the kindest thing she can do is not take up too much space.

she blinks, staring down at her distorted reflection in the dark cup of coffee. with a twist of the cap, she pours the contents of the carton into the mug, watching caramel-colored streaks of liquid marble the surface like smoke.

annalise isn't actually particular about her coffee.
[break][break]
picking up her mug, she joins him at the island, lifting herself onto a barstool next to him. she kicks a heel against a rung on the stool idly, eyes fixed on the steam rolling off the surface of her drink, slow to acknowledge the prickling feeling of his eyes on her.[break][break]
"i ... " she starts, stops. her hands wrap around the mug, letting the near-painful heat sink into her palms. "i don't know if i'm good enough to be a ranger."

the words feel like barbwire coming out and the weight of the confession makes her eyes grow glossy. being a ranger means everything to her.

"and it really fucking sucks."

patience bleeds from him as he hangs his head low and loses himself in the rising steam of his coffee. normally anxious, greyson didn't even have the energy to filter that emotion through the strainer of his clouded mind.

then, like surfacing from a long dive, greyson listens to anna's confession. he allows the words to sink in for them both; to allow that feeling to settle, before he finally speaks.

"yeah, that'll happen." he says alongside a long exhale. arceus, he was tired. but, anna didn't need the tired, pessimistic man that was grieving. so, with more effort than he'd admit to, greyson straights his back and squares his shoulder.

"that's how you know you're doing it right, you know?" he rubs his hand around the base of the glass just slightly, feeling the heat transfer. "if you don't think you're fucking everything up then this job wouldn't be for you. the fact you're questioning whether or not you're good enough for this, is what does make you good enough for this, y'know?"

it sounds dismissive at first. a difficult confession culminating to the advice of "it happens". annalise looks at him, lips pressed together tightly to conceal a quiver, but lets him elaborate before she allows herself to get too deep in her head about this. she nods slowly, unconvinced, the first time he checks in with her.

"i guess," she relents the second time, turning her face away. her nails tap against the ceramic. "i mean, i do have the passion and the drive and everything like that, but ... "

the mug slips through her fingers. her hands slide across the countertop and into her lap. "like, um, i went to check on the ampharos up in lilycove's lighthouse tonight and, um, someone else was there."
[break][break]
her fingers curl into her palm, acrylic nails bite into skin. "it was, like, some guy from team rocket and, um, m-my pokemon don't know how to fight like that. i don't know how to fight like that. and i was so scared he would steal ampharos and hurt it, so — "

she exhales hard, tipping her chin back and blinking so the tears gathering across her waterline won't mess up her already-definitely-messed-up makeup. once she's certain the tears have dried up, she lowers her head to stare at her lap.

"i'm just not — i don't know — strong enough? harsh enough? to do my job. how am i supposed to protect pokemon if i can't beat one fucking guy?"
[break][break]
in a one-in-a-million shot, Isaac Merlo 's moral compass had aligned with hers, but annalise knows the next rocket will be nowhere near as compassionate about pokemon or forgiving of weakness.

something wet rolls off the tip of her nose and splatters against a bare stretch of thigh.

"mm," he says in response, lifting the mug to his lips to take a quiet sip. he knew from experience better than to interrupt; to let the woman bare her soul out at her own pace.

he'd felt this way too many times to count. the doubt, the anger, the fear; they were all welcomed experiences, each one was nestled deep somewhere in greyson's chest. and, when it was the least convenient, it would bubble to the surface. when it was over?

it'd repeat all over again.

greyson reaches out with a warm smile, grabbing annalise henderson's hand in his own.

"i can help you get stronger, if you want. we can work on training you and your pokemon to be better fighters. but you don't need to be a harsher person. you're fine the way you are."

her eyes are blurry, but she feels his fingers curl over her own. warm, reassuring, the type of gesture that makes her want to unravel underneath the safety of her friend's touch. annalise isn't normally self-conscious, but doubt ravages her mind like an infection.

"thank you," she says wetly, swiping the dark circle beneath her eye with the side of her hand, then the other. his offer brings relief, its edges tangled with apprehension. does she even have it in her to get stronger? what if she's already hit the ceiling and won't know it until she's banging her fist against the glass?

and is he certain she doesn't need to be a harsher person?
[break][break]
"i don't want to hurt people," she admits with a sniffle, squeezing his fingers gently. the words make her chest squeeze painfully because she knows it's inevitable. "but i know other people want to hurt me. is being just strong enough then?"

her free hand finds the mug sitting in front of her. it's still warm to the touch, but she draws it toward herself to take a sip. the warmth seeps down her throat and collects in the tightness between her ribs.

annalise finally looks at greyson, the tip of her nose and the hollows of her eyes splotched with pink. she's quiet for a moment, contemplation swirling in her eyes. her racing thoughts come to a jerking halt as a new concern comes to the forefront of her mind: she must look so fucking ugly right now.

"you've worked for the league for a while now, right?" first an officer, now a gym leader. "has it changed you?"

she tries a smile. "or have you always been like this?"
