Kepler didn’t really like Meteor Falls. Tolerated it, more like. Something about it gave him headaches-- maybe the proximity to the center of the earth and the increase of pressure. But the roar of the falls, the way it echoes, stretches from wall to wall like an auditory spider’s web, and the darkness, a soft and comforting blanket to wrap around his shoulders, and the chill--

--okay, maybe he does like Meteor Falls.

Olympus swings around a corner, loud steps echoing clankily around the cavern. Kepler’s legs dangling over the silverite X across their face. The Metagross pauses, and Kepler looks up, surprised to see another individual in what he’d come to imagine as his sanctity of loneliness and safety.

A surprise. One he recognizes, increasing it tenfold.

“Administrator Beckett,” Kepler calls, voice a quiet shock echoing around the cavern, amplified by the ambient moisture in the air.

Humidity lowers the density of air. Sounds travel faster.

He doesn’t expect the other man to recognize him, but he hops off Olympus so the Metagross’ stomping doesn’t disturb whatever prey the underboss has come in search of.

He at least has the decency to blush, ducking his chin and grinning into the floor. “I see my reputation proceeds me,” he says, in the kind of confident voice that suggests he’s being a dick on purpose.

His approach pauses as the Octazooka and the resulting crash of gear causes him to wince, knocking the wind out of his sails and derailing any confident attempt at discussion he may have been able to conjure.

In the resulting silence, he looks up, eyes akin to a rabbit peering out of its bolthole.

”I’m fine,” he says, convincingly, ”how are you?”

Olympus accidentally drives a Chimecho, investigating with curiosity, into the ground with a heavy step. The stunned chime rolls along the slightly sloped cavern floor, bell first, to rest at Kepler’s feet. He zaps it with a Pokeball.

Kepler hunches his shoulders in a noncommittal shrug. He wills the atmosphere around him to condense, make him smaller, compact him into millimeters. It doesn’t work.

“No.”

Olympus reaches out and snags a Noibat on the fly with lightning-quick reflexes, throwing the flailing thing at Kepler’s feet. He collects it in a Pokeball, its leathery wings beating uselessly against his ankles.

“I’m about to start onboarding for our space projects. Very exciting stuff.”

His gaze goes up towards the cavernous ceiling, the stalactites clinging to mineralized life.

“How’s leadership treating you?”

As though he has an idea of how Theo was, before. He doesn’t. He’s making an attempt at pleasant conversation, like all good robots are supposed to do in the vicinity of their superiors.

Theo’s Dusknoir dusts an Oranguru without a second thought. Meanwhile, Olympus fishes a Tympole out of the pool, shakes the water from it and holds it out for Kepler to bop with a Pokeball.

“Ah.” He knows little about Rocket’s operations in Kanto, partially because he doesn’t need to know, and partially because he doesn’t want to know. He doesn’t so much care about the plight of the common man. Not when there’s science to be done.

“Maybe someday,” he confesses, with a shrug. “I was going to be the head of Alamos U research and development before Lulu Flint saved me from it.” He rolled his yes. “I don’t much care as long as I… learn things.”

Kepler worked hard to maintain his mental superiority-- which meant he had to stay alive. You can’t be the smartest person in the world if you’re a corpse. So over the years he’d learned to not mouth off to his superiors quite as much.

“I do what I’m told and I don’t care about collateral as long as I get to do my research,” he told Theo, and he meant it. He’d killed a guy-- mostly accidentally, and it was mostly his Torchic, but he’d killed a guy. Kepler touched the long scar on his left wrist out of habit.

“Boring,” he confessed, looking up at the cavernous ceiling, “but with a healthy respect for the sciences. With the Space-Time towers as the centerpiece of the town, they really couldn’t be.”

Across the cavern, Olympus tackles a sleeping Walrein into a wall. Kepler has to really heave the Pokeball.

“Alamos U’s biggest export is architects. Physicists are its second.”
