Kepler rests his chin in his palm, staring out at the pools again. Olympus is distracted by something, their heavy stomps echoing quieter and quieter as they disappear somewhere in the distance.

“Have you worked at all on Occupied Ocean?” Kepler asked, wondering if maybe he shouldn’t be discussing secret ops out loud; but they’re hardly in public. “I keep meaning to send my thesis to Rowan Wrynn. I don’t know what good it will do or if he’ll even read it. But.”

His tone is thoughtful. He’s lapsed into that companionable tenure that makes him feel like just existing is a little bit okay. He’ll never relax one-hundred percent, really; but, it’s at least, like, forty percent.

He does jump when Olympus throws a Bruxish on the shore next to him, the large-lipped fish flapping and smacking against the rock until Kepler can make his shaking hands expand a Pokeball and toss it.

by choice, really, seeing how this is Rowan Wrynn's operation. it allows the underboss a chance to evaluate the beast. to see what additional value he brings to rocket.[break][break]

dusknoir fades back like the ghost-type it is and sends a SHADOW BALL into the corphish. it is sent to the ground where a pokeball finds it.[break][break]

Kepler is still calming down, shaking slightly as he settles back into his seat. He combines the exhalation of his nerves with an exhalation of irritation.

“Not yet,” he says, and does a remarkable job of not sounding bitter. “I hope to, though. It’s definitely right up my alley.”

Olympus tosses a Munna across the pond, pink dream dust streaming and sparkling behind it. It hits the opposite shore with a noise like a squeaky toy and Kepler hits it with a Pokeball while it’s still stunned.

“I need to get out more,” he says on half a laugh. "Maybe that’ll get me more involved. I just feel safest in my lab.” He clears his throat, realizing he’s oversharing.

Kepler inclines his head in thought, peering into the gently rippling surface of the pool before them. On the one hand, the idea of having Administrator Theo Beckett accompany him on missions does make him feel safe. On the other, he’s still ashamed that he feels he needs his hand held in order to go out and do things.

He wasn’t made for fieldwork. He wasn’t made for adventure. He is just a little parasite, a little archaea, flitting about in his isotonic environment, pH neutral, temperature steady.

“A little,” he says, in reference to the flowers, “though not as much as I would like. Plant science is boring. At least, that’s what I thought I was getting into. In a place like Hoenn, where new species of Pokemon are popping up every day, I originally dismissed this idea of a new flower as simply that.”

Olympus picks up an Omanyte and gives the shell one hard crack against the stone (Kepler does not jump, this time) then holds out the stunned nautiloid for Kepler to tap with a Pokeball.

“But now, obviously, I know that’s not the case.”

More fool him.

Theo mentions ultra beasts and if Kepler’d had cat ears they’d have perked.

"I’ve read the reports from the Blacephelon attack, and others,” he said, eyes turning skyward to the cave ceiling as though by impulse. "I’d love to study one up close.”

It’s a terrifying and exhilarating thought. They are decidedly dangerous, but endlessly fascinating. Though prone to nerves, Kepler was usually more curious than fearful, especially about unknowns.

Olympus snags a Brionne by the tail and dangles it for capture. Kep zaps it with a Pokeball.

"I definitely find them more interesting than crystablooms.”

Kepler tries to think on what he knows about Nagandel. Not a whole lot.

“How’d you manage that?” he asks, impressed.

Theo mentions that the Ultra Beast is aggressive. Kepler suppresses a roll of his eyes: dichotomously, an inward and outward reflection. Outwardly because, duh. Inwardly because even Martín del Mar’s shadow Inkay had been aggressive towards him.

“I’d love to study it,” he said, feeling that maybe Theo might be a bit more proactive about protecting him than Mars was.

Olympus snags a Slowpoke by the tail and dangles it out to Kepler, who repeats the catching action as he had with the Brionne.

“I probably wouldn’t do it if you weren’t there, so.”
