I. CORRELATIONS BETWEEN BOND AND EVOLUTION

"...Anecdotal evidence suggests the bond between pokemon and their trainer impacts growth and development positively. Research supports this thesis; certain species (e.g. Alolan Meowth, Golbat and Riolu) can only undergo evolutionary adaptation while under specific stimuli which, unlike pokemon tethered to any of the fundamental affinities, would appear to stem from their closest familial attachments. Absent of this stimuli, many of these species will never evolve, even under extreme duress (the common denominator).[break][break]

In the case of Mega Evolution, there is a similar consensus. Historically it has been suggested that pokemon require a strong bond in order to undergo this temporary transformation, despite evidence to the contrary. Whether the nature or depth of this bond is of importance, or whether external factors (e.g. Ultra Wormhole radiation) are affecting this process, remains open to debate. And yet the aforementioned species clearly cannot undergo evolution spontaneously despite sharing an environment.[break][break]

Do we conclude then that mega evolution requires no such bond? Do we cast doubt on popular belief? The answer is never so clear.[break][break]

What if the bond itself is not the missing factor, but simply a trigger mechanism for a more obviously organic process? As with more recent developments, we have discovered the presence of POKeRUS in anomalic pokemon specimen. What if a similar hormone or compound were responsible for inciting these developments in pokemon? What if its presence was simply a spontaneous mutation? May we safely assume pokemon mutate at different rates?[break][break]

Then what if Ultra Wormhole radiation can disturb the latent material in fully developed species because of their relative genomic stasis? Whereas unevolved specimens exhibit DNA that is highly active and tolerant to change due to already being in a state of progressive flux, perhaps we may determine that matured species are uniquely predisposed towards reacting to this radioactive stimuli due to the considerably more static nature of their genetic material.[break][break]

Could we then reasonably conclude that the presence of a bond has substantive impact, while also concluding why species are able to spontaneously undergo mega evolution without the presence of such a bond? And can we then hypothesize that the BOND has a direct influence on the adaptation of genetic material within any given pokemon, and that marked growth is not just the result of a placebo effect?[break][break]

Could we then more directly influence these developments, aspiring to the level of genetic manipulations, using not conventional science—but the emotional manipulation of such specimen? Further studies are required.[break][break]

The subject had first become of interest to Ceri when now-underboss Killian Decker had introduced her to Deoxys and allowed her to study it. What drives a pokémon to bond with a person? What do they gain? Would Killian be able to access more of Deoxys’ abilities if he were to improve his relationship with it? Her mind is filled with questions, but during her research, she has also learned a few interesting things…

MEGA EVOLUTION, for example, is a phenomenon that supposedly depends on the bond between pokémon and trainer. It’s a good start. And, it’s with Mega Evolution in mind that she requested the assistance of one of Rocket’s Beasts.

Is he somehow related to Serena Malcolm? Honestly, Ceri’s first impression of him when she steps into one of the labs equipped to handle more dangerous testing is that he’s kind of really intimidating.

All she does is put the tablet she had brought with her under her arm, giving him a little wave with perfectly manicured fingers. Today her nail polish is red.

”Hey, hey! You must be Adrian! I’m Ceri, it’s nice to meet you! Really excited to have you here! This shouldn’t take long, if you’re busy and all… I’m just gonna set up the cameras and energy reading equipment and we can get started, yeah? ”

There are two things Adrian would probably notice beyond her appearance: she talks really fast, and she has a heavy northern Galarian accent.

[attr="class","adrianwtw"]"Yeah. Hey. Sure." Someone is really chipper. In spite of how wordy Ceri was, Adrian tried to keep his head up and eyes forward, if only to not seem disinterested. The contents of what M.A.G.M.A was studying intrigued him, though like everyone in Team Rocket, he had his own reasons. Adrian supposed everyone here was working with ulterior motives; what might Ceri's have been?[break][break]

It's not a question worth asking, because he doesn't care. But he does nod, wanting to hash out a few things.[break][break]

"Is there any particular reason you chose my Gyarados?" Or any Gyarados for that matter. She may later come to regret that, but he could only imagine there was a particular reason for her specific requisition in this study. Perhaps she could elucidate on that further for him.[break][break]

"They can be pretty temperamental..." Although he wasn't too worried about the submarine as a whole, her lab might not weather such an unruly, atrocious pokemon for very long. Maybe she was banking on his Gyarados having more restraint than that. Well, I don't wanna disappoint...[break][break]

Ever since his 'promotion', the top brass felt like it was always breathing down his neck. Suddenly his accomplishments, or lack thereof, were worth scrutiny. No more bumming it as a part-timer for me, I guess. Hmmn.[break][break]

Bottom line? This needed to go well for him.[break][break]

Brandishing the pokeball with the monster in question, he unleashes the beast so to speak, although it poses much less of an issue than he might have originally thought. Perhaps despite its namesake, enough time has passed for a trusted BOND to form between them. And yet it regards the environment and Ceri testily, perhaps expecting to battle. A low growl proves its lack of certainty. "FUROR."[break][break]

FUROR (♂) APPEARS TO BE IN ITS PRIME; EXHIBITS ATYPICAL FANGS

Its eyes are drawn to him, a subtle leer. He runs a hand along its scaled side, earning a soft snarl; something reminiscent of a purr.
"How're you feeling?" Furor shows no signs of duress, but seems to consider the laboratory less than pleasant. It will abide their research for now.[break][break]

"Anything you want to know about FUROR?" Adrian would have to be sparse with some of the details, but there were facets worth sharing. Things like FUROR's history with Adrian, or any unusual trainer items he may have used on it perhaps, were other things to consider while conducting their research. Not that Adrian knew enough of that to be more forthcoming with that sort of information.

”Oh! I’m glad you asked! Yes, there is.” It’s almost as if she had been expecting those questions, and as if she’s pleased to hear them. She pauses in the middle of setting up one of the devices for the sake of giving Adrian a bright smile, and then she continues with her work. The device is connected to the tablet.

”You said it yourself, Gyarados are super temperamental, ya? So I was thinking…Just training a pokémon like that and getting it to answer to your commands takes a lot of effort, which translates to a strong bond. Much more if your Gyarados can mega evolve! That got me looking through Rocket files and what not, and I noticed that a lot of the mission reports mention you and your Gyarados. Like… uhmm… the expedition into the Tree of Life last November!”

She talks a lot and she talks fast, seemingly being incapable of running out of air. While she explains, all machines and cameras are quickly yet carefully set up, and by the time Adrian brings out a pokéball, Ceri is standing there ready to witness it – tablet in hand.

Furor, Adrian’s Gyarados, makes for an impressive sight, and looking up at the massive pokémon, Ceri finds herself grinning.

”Cool. Let’s see… How about his age? Does he know any unusual moves? Anything about him you’d like to point out?” Warm eyes squint, watching the pokémon carefully. ”...What’s up with his fangs?”

It left him somewhat distrusting and wary of what details and notes might be scattered around pertaining to him, and who might all be privy to such things. He'd devote more time to worrying about it later.[break][break]

Besides, Ceri was running her mouth too fast for him to get sidetracked. So instead he'd humor the science, and see where it led them.
Perhaps this would end up useful.[break][break]

"Somewhere around three, maybe four years old. More depending on his age before I captured him." Furor had not been with him from birth; it was a wild thing he'd captured as a MAGIKARP and trained into what it was today. He'd forgotten by then how they usually determined these sorts of questions; was it the scales, or maybe something about the length of the whiskers?[break][break]

"I've fed him a PASSHO BERRY in the past," which had consequently given it the ability to use Z-moves. In fact it had developed a rather unique one, and the story behind that was rather interesting—and confidential.[break][break]

He wouldn't just tell her outright.[break][break]

In spite of his convictions, her attention is drawn to Furor's fangs. How much was he willing to divulge?[break][break]

Furor senses his unease, waving its tail preparedly.[break][break]

"It was during the Megalopolan Invasion. It shattered its teeth against the skin of a NIHILEGO*, but was able to regrow them using the power of a new Z-move. They've been that way ever since," he replied.[break][break]

It wasn't technically a lie, just an omission of key details.

Ceri listens carefully to the information given by Adrian, not missing a single detail. She nods here and there, giving an occasional ’Aha’ and ‘I see’ while one-handedly typing a thing or two on the screen of her tablet. There’s a chart to methodically fill out, and not a thing is left out.

”UB 01 Parasyte.” She says out loud when Adrian mentions Nihilego, a pokémon she has long since had a fascination with. There and then, her gaze fixes on Furor’s fangs one more time. ”I’ve read reports, but I had no idea their skin is that tough. Fascinating.”

It’s terribly easy to get sidetracked, but they’re not here to talk about Nihilego, are they now?

”Would you say you can understand Furor’s moods? That if something bothers him, you can guess what it is?” She looks at Adrian, tilting her head slightly to the left. ”Is he the pokémon you’re closest with?”
