for what feels like a long time, annalise is alone on the perimeter of tall grass, arms crossed. the grass rustles indiscriminately, full of wild pokemon and spinach alike. craning, she tries to spot a flash of his pale coat against rich greens weeds. " ... spinach?"

he pops out with a happy bleat, spinning around her legs. a second pokemon scuttles out of the grass, joining the orbit around annalise as it chases her skiddo. or her skiddo chases it — she's not really sure after a few rotations.

either from dizziness or exhaustion, the games eventually end. spinach plants himself on his haunches and fomantis catches up with him, chittering. seeing that they've become fast friends, annalise tosses a safari ball at the little grass-type.

further into the reserve, a duskull manifests under the shade of a tree. it's unusual to have a ghost sighting in the middle of the day, but the spirit haunts along the treeline after them as they walk. [break][break]annalise thought it would eventually leave them alone, but the chill creeping up her spine and settling against the back of her neck makes her toss a look over her shoulder. same red light floating in the shadows.[break][break]
"wanna get some battle practice in?" she asks the goat trotting at her side. his bleating is answer enough. she turns on her heel and points at the offending ghost, "seed bomb!"

the duskull can't float out of the way fast enough. spinach fires a round of seeds at the ghost-type, bursting open with a pop! pop! pop! as they hit their target and the grass around it.

duskull takes the hint, evaporating like smoke.

spinach finds the magikarp first, flopping uselessly on a well-worn path deeper into the safari zone. annalise rushes over to assess the situation, eyes scanning the area for a body of water to return the magikarp to.

it's big, blue, and quite a far stretch from where the magikarp is right now. how did this even happen? with a frown, she stands over the fish, reaching for one of the safari balls she had in her pocket. "let me get you somewhere safer, little fishie."

light envelopes the magikarp as it's pulled into a safari ball.

after that pitiful magikarp, she's almost relieved to see the energetic grookey that jumps in their path. it strikes its stick against the ground, rustling the grass. [break][break]"think you can handle this little guy, spinach?"

with a bleat, her skiddo charges, sparks dancing off his hooves as he charges the other grass-type. tucking his head, he catches grookey by the horns and tosses it into the air.

with a gasp, annalise stretches her hands out to catch it before it hits the ground at her feet. netted in her arms, the grookey's head lolls back, knocked out by the blow.

she takes one of her safari balls and catches the grookey.

the water alongside the path ripples, but annalise pays it no mind. she's too busy fast-walking to catch up with her skiddo. spinach gallops ahead, snapping his back legs out each time he makes a twisting jump into the air. kids are so energetic.

spinach lets out a troubled bleat somewhere up ahead.

annalise hurries to catch up with him, rounding the path to find a salandit blocking her skiddo's path. her concern washes over her partner pokemon, brows furrowing at the ashen edges of the leaves that wreath his neck. the salandit coughs up another flame thrower, but her skiddo leaps aside this time.

"wild charge!" most of spinach's moves are near useless against the lizard, but this one should work, right? with surprising deftness, spinach whirls to face his opponent and charges towards it. electricity jumps off his body as he runs down yet another safari pokemon. this one is knocked off the path instead of flung into annalise's arms, but it doesn't have the energy to resist when she throws her last safari ball at it.

"we're all done here now." her skiddo looks back at her petulantly, hesitating even as she waves him over to double back. "we can come back laaater."
