At last, Shalin had made it out of that horrible desert. Being so windy made it painful to travel through the sandstorms, but heat exhaustion would have been an issue if she had worn long clothes. Once she was back onto a dirt road, she took her shoes off to clean the sand out of them the best she could before slipping them back on. She was on the hunt for more Fire-type Pokémon for her next dungeon delve, which would be the Shark's Maw, a forbidden cave on top of Meteor Falls. She had been up there before, but a Space-Time Distortion had formed around her when she got too close to the entrance. Giant Dragon-type Pokémon had the girl fearing for her life that day.

She would come better prepared this time. Namely, with more than one fire Pokémon. She even had a new friend on her team, Sandy. The Flygon smiled at her from with the Poké Ball. She smiled back, but wanted to give the rest of her team a run, particularly the bug-types. Grabbing Queen Zing's Poké Ball, she tapped the release switch, calling on the giant queen Beedrill's aid. Waving one of her foreleg stings at her trainer, she responded by approaching, and the two embraced.

Shalin gently stroked the yellow Pokémon's head before climbing aboard and popping her earplugs in. She felt a tingling sensation all over her body as the Beedrill warmed her wings up, their droning rising in pitch as the tingling feeling intensified. Just as she was able to take off, Queen Zing stopped buzzing and started to turn around. "What's up, girl?" she asked.

How long had it been since Thomas found himself in this area?

When he had first arrived in Hoenn, he would frequent this area, in the pursuit of certain Fighting-types. But ever since he had become more involved in the League's affairs, he found himself going on less expeditions.

Having more free time, Thomas decided to visit the area for old time's sake. With a dark gray cloak worn over his outfit for protection, Thomas marched through the ashen area. Boots left impressions in the ground, only to slowly be filled with more ashfall.

Thomas would spot a Beedrill, along with a humanoid figure, shorter than he was. He had a hand trained on one of his Pokeballs, should she attempt to attack him.

Before Shalin could get an answer from her Beedrill, she took back to the air and started flying in the direction of the human figure that spotted her. She felt powerful bursts of vibration course through her body as the Beedrill's wingbeat fluctuated speeds rapidly, the sound not like that of a revving motorcycle. She enjoyed the turbulence at first, feeling like she was being shaken in several directions at the same time.

As the two approached the young man, the turbulence got worse, and the vibration got to the point where being on her Beedrill was starting to sting. The two slowly lost altitude despite Shalin pulling back for more. The giant insect simply didn't have the strength to do so in the weather conditions they were trying to fly through. She landed the bug-type a safe distance in front of the cloaked figure, Queen Zing waving a foreleg sting much like a human would wave a hand. "Didn't think I'd run into anyone else out here today!" Shalin smiled beneath her cloth mask and goggles, removing her earplugs while Queen Zing rested.

Thomas watched as the Beedrill landed in front of him. Underneath the cloak, a hand reached for a Pokeball, just in case it was hostile, but the seemingly friendly demeanor of the Beedrill and its mistress prompted him to ease up somewhat.

"Hardly anyone comes out here, it seems.", Thomas commented. "Shame, really, this is one of the most unique and beautiful areas in the Region.", he'd add.

A Croagunk would spot the trio. For a moment, she contemplated a sneak attack. But something told her that it wouldn't be such a hot idea. So instead, the Croagunk would cut her losses, and move on.

When her queen Beedrill had come to rest, Shalin peered toward her wings. A thin layer of volcanic ash had accumulated on them; no wonder she couldn't fly! None of her aerial Pokémon would be strong enough to be able to soar in weather like this. Disappointed, she withdrew the bug-type and sent out her female Pyroar, Kiara. Like the Beedrill, she wore riding gear specially fit for her own species. Were all her Pokémon like that? While the falling ash blocked a lot of heat and sunlight, making the air chilly by Hoennian standards, the fire-type big cat seemed content to traverse the wasteland.

"You gotta be pretty tough to come out here," Shalin replied to the traveler, Kiara greeting him with a purr that probably sounded like a grumble to him if he wasn't familiar with the species. "Name's Shalin, wildest Pokémon rider this side of Hoenn!" As practiced as that cheesy line was, it was bluntly truthful. Case in point: she rode a Beedrill to get here. "That was Queen Zing, my Beedrill, but she can't fly in this weather. This is Kiara, my Pyroar. She's a sweetie, I promise!"

Admittedly, he had seldom seen someone ride a Beedrill, or a Pyroar before. But then, given his frame, he wouldn't be able to ride such a Pokemon without hurting them.

"I suppose, but this Region is filled with some tough customers.", he'd reply to Shalin. "Call me Daisuke, just a simple farmhand.", he'd introduce himself to her. He would give a smile and a wave to the Pyroar.

Thomas would spot a Braixen practicing with her wand in the distance. For a moment, she looked over to the two humans, and their Pokemon, before moving elsewhere to resume her practice. Not that Thomas was stopping her.

Shalin's choice of mount was nothing short of the stars aligning. Beedrill were some of the meanest Pokémon around. For a Pokémon popular among new trainers, they were dangerous. Even a Poké Ball generally didn't curb their predatory instincts. That was just one factor. Size and strength were huge factors, as well. With large Pokémon becoming more commonplace in Hoenn, that had been mitigated some. Third, the trainer doing the catching had to be lithe and small. Even a trainer with an above average build could not fly on a Beedrill; it was just beyond the species' limits.

Mount-capable Pyroar were a lot easier to find, but they had a different problem associated with riding. Unlike most common mount Pokémon, the backs of Pyroar flexed harshly, necessitating a saddle designed to keep the rider as stable as possible. Even with one, though, it was still significantly harsher than the gait of a Rapidash.

Responding to the wave, Shalin guided Kiara toward Thomas, the fire-type greeting them with a gentle purr, though only gentle by species' standards. It was still coming from a Pyroar, a fearsome species that was one of the most loyal if one could forge that all-important bond. "Great to meet you! I'm a wilderness guide - think of it like a safari guide for the most remote environments of Hoenn!" She, of course, had an ulterior motive: today, she wanted to investigate Mount Chimney for the entrance to Death Crater, the location of the Thermal Medallion. She wasn't ready to venture in there yet, as she needed Pokémon that could protect her from the extreme heat, but it would be nice to know where it was.

Thomas would gently extend a hand down to the Pyroar, to let her take his scent in. He was well aware of the species, and its reputation for ferocity.

"A wilderness guide? Interesting.", Thomas noted out loud.

Through the ashfall, Thomas could spot a Torchic and a Conkeldurr in the distance. The Fire-type seemed to be entertaining the Fighting-type. Their interaction looked to be a peaceful one, something that the former Elite 4 didn't want to interrupt.

"So what brings you out here today? You here to catch some Pokemon, or you just taking in the scenery?", he'd inquire.

When offered a hand, Kiara raised a paw and gently lowered it to Thomas' palm. For an apex predator, she was quite docile. Even so, Shalin's traveling companion may have been able to feel the raw power the feline possessed. It was to be expected, considering she was letting Shalin ride her, and the species was known for being trigger happy with bites and claw swipes. Shalin was clearly talented at taming truly dangerous Pokémon.

"Think of it like a safari guide for places that are remote and maybe even a bit dangerous," the green-haired girl elaborated as ash started to accumulate on the lioness' fur. That was going to be a pain to get washed out when they reached town, particularly with Kiara being a fire-type. She was tough enough to be bathed, but that didn't mean she liked it. A nearby Delphox and Camerupt caught her eyes, neither of which brought her interest. While she could mount the Camerupt if she wanted, she didn't see the Fire-type being agile enough to hold her interest.

"It's related to my work," she answered. "Supposedly, a deep secret related to Hoenn's ancient past is located 'in the hottest, fiercest depths of Hoenn's red earth.' The only place I can think of that fits is Mount Chimney. I'll be investigating."

The tall man would spot the Camerupt and Delphox. Neither of them seemed to be attacking them, so 'Daisuke' was content to let them be.

"I take it you're looking for Pokemon that could effectively take you through that area?", he'd ask her.
