after the training session with bryan delarosa, she’d decided to bring in her glowing feebas to see if the mutation was, in fact, the same that had occurred in his kommo-o. as she entered the facility, on her way to a large tank of water meant for water-type training, she felt her nerves rise.

please don’t hurt my fish. please don’t kill my fish.

with a sigh to calm herself, she reached for the pokéball she’d brought along and released the feebas into the tank. through the glass, it began to glow as usual. she watched it curiously, a smile curling on her face as it swam closer to greet her.

”hi there. don’t worry. you’re gonna be fine.”

was she telling the feebas or herself?

Bryan walked in casually, overhearing her talk to her Feebas. Was he really so scary now that he was a beast? Well, maybe it was cause Nina knew little of bryan. [break][break]

or was fear more useful? [break][break]

It didn't matter, her feebas would be fine. "Nina." he says announcing his presence. "Is that the feebas you told me of?" he asked, pausing to look the little fish in the eye as bryan seemingly had a crown of flowers sitting on his head as his strange Comfey sat on his head.

nina’s shoulders jumped, not expecting bryan to walk up while she was mid-pep talk with a fish. her eyes looked caught, but she decided to act like it hadn’t happened and quickly move on.

”bryan. hey.”

with a breath, she looked over at the glowing specimen in the tank, still close to the glass so that it’s illuminate was on brilliant display.

”this is the one, yup.”

He looked at the glowing fish in the tank. "Yup, that glowing is very similar to my own comfey." he says "But when I tried to harvest the flowers she'd use, they'd stop glowing immediately. Probably cause it isn't a part of it's actual body."[break][break]

He stares at the ugly little fish, knowing it held great potential in it "You sure you wanna do this? It might be painful for feebas." he explains, he had no qualms with it as all pokemon existed for the glory of rocket, plus he knew the fish would be ok afterwards...but how it'd perceive Nina after. Well, let's just say he was testing her.

to nina, the feebas was beautiful. its glowing scales were like nothing she’d ever seen before, and she’d had it since it was a very tiny baby, and she was attached to it. for this reason, her heart sunk when bryan mentioned the possible pain it would experience.

again, as with her ninetales, nina assumed that there was no real choice here. the only choice was to give what she had and hope that it would help her progress up the ladder. nowhere but up or dead in this world, now.

she bit her lip lightly, gaze lingering before falling on bryan again with a nod.

”yeah.”

a pause, before she asked despite herself, ”it’ll be okay after, though, right?”

"Physically? 90% gauranteed he'll be fine. Only had one special case where my healing didn't work...well it did but didn't last for long." he said [break][break]

"But he was an extreme case, there are wounds I cannot heal. Like the ones up here." he said pointing to his own head and tapping it slightly. "Feebas might hate me, or you for standing on the sidelines and just watching." he warned her, he had to be upfront with her as this was a sort of trial he was putting her through, to see if she could commit to the Ideology that rocket followed. All pokemon existed for the glory of team rocket. [break][break]

If she couldn't accept it then she'd make very little progress here, but he had faith. He saw the potential in her for growth.

she wasn’t sure how to feel about bryan’s explanation. at least it seemed honest. it didn’t seem like he was trying to make it seem safer than it was. maybe she could trust him after all.

still, it didn’t make this much better. there was a possibility that her fish would not be okay. maybe not even make it? was that the implication?

assuming so and unable to bring herself to ask for clarification, she only looked back at her feebas for a long moment, before her eyes fell back to bryan with a nod.

“okay. let's do it.”

just get it over with, so she could go home and cry about her cruelty over a pint of ice cream. her heart would surely be broken in like the rest of them eventually, but not today.

Bryan closed his eyes when she gave her ok for it. However a small voice inside of his head begged and pleaded with him to do the right thing and to his own surprise. He did. [break][break]

"Alright. If it's what you want." He says as Bryan sends out another pokeball. "Liligant. Sleep powder." he orders as the pokemon obeys and jumps over the tank, spilling a green powder over the tank as it mixed with the water and Feebas slowly lulled itself to sleep. [break][break]

"They had told me to not use a status effect move as it might tamper with the results." he tells her as Bryanreaches over and hands Nina the scalpel. "So make it quick Nina, time's ticking." he says allowing her to do it, he was afraid that if he made contact with Feebas he would wake up mid removal as he could cure a status effect via touch. [break][break]

he moved over to the door and laid against it to make sure no one entered the room and caught them.

her brow furrowed a little in confusion as he released his liligant. not only was she unsure what its purpose was, but she had never seen this kind before. was it one of the distortion variants?

as it went to spike the tank with its sleep powder, nina realized what bryan was doing. but why?

blinking, she took the scalpel. she still didn’t want to do this. she figured he’d be doing it. but it was made much better knowing her feebas wouldn’t feel pain.

”thank you.” quick and small words before she turned to remove her sleeping fish from the tank. laying it on a table, she then took a breath and bit her lip, before going in.

a few scales were removed as carefully as she could manage, before she set the scalpel down.

”okay. done, i think?”

was it enough?

He hated letting people know this side of him existed. While he could be incredibly cruel to those in the league, a softer side of bryan DID exist. [break][break]

But he thought that part of him died alongside Soleil. Seems like he had a soft spot for some people after all. "That should be good enough. I'll take over from here." he said placing a hand on the fish tank as wisps of light arced off of bryan and began to fill the tank. It began to neutralize the green powder floating in the tank and on top of that, restore the feebas's scales that nina had just recently cut off. [break][break]

The Feebas soon awoke after and Bryan removed his hand from the tank. "Tell anyone I did this favor for you and I'll kick your ass, fix you up, and then kick your ass again. Got it?" he explained as this was his price for helping her. He wanted her silence, no one could know he was willing to disobey if he felt the need to.

i’ll take over from here. the words spiked her anxiety for a moment. it didn’t occur to her that bryan might use his avatar powers. she had never seen avatar powers before.

the wisps of light that came off of the beast caused nina to take a step back. it reminded her of the virtual reality training she’d done with jayden cross —only this was real. though surprised, she watched closely as her fish was healed. her attention lingered on the glowing scales which had regenerated, before she looked back at bryan again.

”that’s amazing.”

she wasn’t blinking, in momentary, saucer-eyed awe of him, until he threatened her. her face dropped, lips pursing tightly.

”yup. not a peep from me.”
