She’s no fisherman (fisherwoman?), but a competition is a competition, and truth be told, there isn’t much in this world that Lia loves more than winning. You know who else probably loves winning, though? A guy who literally makes a career out of it.

It’s an assumption because they haven’t known each other for long. In fact, they only met a few days ago. Yet, the conversation they had while watching the fireworks had been nice, she had fun, and later on when they exchanged numbers, she had been glad. She had not, however, expected @marshall to actually agree to come fishing with her.

It seems a little too… boring for his taste. She sure always has thought it to be too boring for her, but who knows, maybe good company will make it better.

”Have you ever gone fishing before? I honestly could barely figure out how to put the rod together.” Lia admits with a soft laugh, sitting on the boat that had been rented for the occasion (one of many, given the amount of people participating in the competition). But, just as she says that, she feels the fishing line tense up, indicating that something had taken the bait.

”Oh.” A bright smile illuminates her expression, and turning to look at Marshall, she winks teasingly. ”Think you can catch one bigger than me?”

Nothing better than a competition within a competition, no?

If Marshall had to be completely honest, fishing was boring.[break][break]

But how could he say 'no' to hanging out with Lia? He'd enjoyed her company on the beach the other night, when they were drinking beer and watching the fireworks. Conversations with her came easily (though, truth be told, all conversations came easily for him). She was also very pretty, and Marshall had to admit: he was kind of smitten.[break][break]

So he'd said yes, gotten up early, picked up the rental gear, and met Lia at the docks to choose their boat.[break][break]

"My dad dragged me on fishing trips when I was a kid," he said, chuckling. "He taught me a bunch of stuff about it, but I can hardly remember it all. But I do know I'm gonna catch way bigger fish than you."[break][break]

Marshall stuck his tongue out at Lia playfully and returned her wink, just as his own fishing line tugged with a bite on the other end.[break][break]

Gods… I can just imagine you being bored out of your mind, I bet you were one of those kids that never sits still.” A light chuckle comes with the thought, although admittedly, Marshall doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who likes sitting still even now. Maybe that’s why she had been so surprised he had agreed to come fishing with her. Maybe it’s because they barely know each other.

Regardless, it’s fun.

”That must have been nice in its own way, though. I doubt my dad even knows how to fish… We went camping one and he barely could put our tent together.” She has always liked talking about her family, and this time, she does so while reeling in her first catch… A perfectly normal Wishiwashi.

Aw, not like Marshall would have much trouble beating that...

Except for the fact that while she’s busy putting the small fish back in the water, he catches a Mantine.

”Ha! I’m pretty sure that’s like the tiniest Mantine I’ve ever seen.” She grins, moving closer to get a better look at it. ”It’s kinda cute… Do you think it’s better at surfing than the ones from the festival? I swear they never land the tricks I want, but that might be my own fault.”

If angelo vestri were here, he’d probably agree with her. He has gotten plenty of laughs out of watching her eat sand by now. Such is the beauty of friendship.

Unbelievable. Marshall had fished up a Mantine, normally much larger than a Wishiwashi, but somehow, this one was tiny?! He stared at the miniature Pokémon with an expression of pure disbelief. "How is this possible…?" he muttered under his breath.[break][break]

Then he barked out a self-deprecating laugh and gently lowered the baby Mantine into the water so it could swim to safety.[break][break]

"Maybe the universe is telling me to try surfing one more time," Marshall said to Lia as he cast his line again out over the sea. "I'm taking a break from it because I can't seem to get the tricks just right. Sounds like we're in the same boat there, uh, metaphorically speaking."[break][break]

He offered her a lopsided grin and settled into a comfortable seat in their boat. She was right that he wasn't the kind of kid to sit still, and even as an adult, he found it hard to just chill while doing nothing.[break][break]

"Did you do a lot of outdoorsy stuff as a kid?" he asked, eager to learn more about her.[break][break]

There is a small comfort in hearing @marshall understands her struggles when it comes to Mantine Surfing, because yes, it has kind of sucked. A lot. Will she ever be able to land a Magikarp Splash? She’s even seeing it in her sleep by this point.

”Damn, looks like we really are, huh?” She laughs, for there’s no point in getting depressed about it. Lia has never been the sort of person to give up easily, even if by now frustration is what fuels her when surfing. Despite the thought, she gives Marshall a soft smile, tucking a loose strand of platinum hair behind her ear. ”You should keep trying, though. I bet you’ll totally land your next trick.”

She hopes as much for his sake, at least.

”I actually did, yeah! I told you I grew up in Petalburg, right? My family’s house is right by the woods and when I was a kid I would always go play there. I really loved it, there was thi–” Just as she’s telling him about her childhood, while she’s still only holding the rod with one hand, something pulls at the line with unbelievable force. It almost causes her to let go and fall in the water while doing so, but thankfully Lia has quick reflexes, and she finds herself standing to counter the sheer strength of the fish. Now, see, Lia is also not as weak as she may seem, and years of archery are partially to thank for it. But, even if that’s the case, she feels like she’s going to lose the battle against this fish.

”Ah, fuck… Marshall, can you help me out here?” A smile, trying not to make it seem as much of a big deal as it is.
[break][break]
Once the fish is out of the water, the reasons for its strength becomes clear: it’s fucking massive.

”I didn’t even know Barraskewda could get that big?!”
[break][break]
It’s in shock that she laughs, loudly and gleefully this time. And, while still laughing, her line is cast one more time, the Barraskewda being released back into the ocean.

Even before Lia asked for help with her catch, Marshall leaped out of his seat and grabbed her fishing rod with both hands. He pulled with her, every muscle in his body taut with effort. The Barraskewda was so enormous that it nearly knocked them down on their butts in the boat.[break][break]

"Holy shit!" Marshall exclaimed, alarmed at first. But then Lia laughed with such infectious energy that he couldn't help break out into laughter, too. "That was amazing!"[break][break]

Once the Barraskewda was returned to the sea, Marshall sat back down to resume their conversation, choosing this time to sit closer to Lia.[break][break]

"I loved playing in the woods, too. My hometown's kinda small so there wasn't much to do as a kid, so I'd ride my bike everywhere, go camping, play in the streams. I guess I was something of a wild child." He chuckled and leaned back so he could gaze up at the soft, wispy clouds passing by overhead. "It was all really fun, though. Life was simple."[break][break]

He looked back down in time to see something tugging at his own fishing rod. This catch took much less strength to collect, revealing a normal Basculin on the hook.[break][break]

"Huh. Maybe I'll keep this one."[break][break]

”Ah, that sounds like it must have been great. You totally seem like the type to have been a wild child.” There’s a soft chuckle at that, because somehow, it’s terribly easy to imagine all the things @marshall speaks of: him as a kid just running around through the woods and riding his bike. The thought is adorable, and it makes her smile. ”I’ve always loved the outdoors. My parents were pretty strict when I was a kid, so I did everything I could to get all my studying and practising done as fast as possible so I could go play in the woods. I think they always hated that about me, hah.”

These are not things Lia often speaks of, and it occurs to her how easily the words come when talking to him. She looks at him, watching as a cute Wishiwashi like the one she had caught before is reeled in.

”Yeah? Wishiwashi are really cool.”
[break][break]
It’s then that it happens again.
[break][break]
Lia barely has time to relax by the time she’s pulled towards the water one more time, forcing her to resist while holding onto the rod with all of her strength. Is this for real?! She had taken a picture of the Barraskewda thinking that there was no way she’d catch anything bigger, but apparently they had sailed into a “giant fish zone” or something.

”Oh my god… What the hell is going on?!” She exclaims when the enormous Lanturn is out of the water, laughing in sheer disbelief.

Excitement built up in Marshall as he listened to Lia while he fished up his next catch, a cute Wishiwashi that he decided to let go. The fact that she enjoyed the same activities he did as a kid immediately filled him with ideas of other things they could do together. After all, he had no intention to walk away from Splashfest and never talk to her again.[break][break]

"We should go somewhere after Splashfest! Camping, maybe, or we could explore somewhere," Marshall suggested as he cast his line again. "I could take you for a ride on my motorcycle, too, if that sounds cool?"[break][break]

Before Lia could answer, her rod bent again with an extreme curve. He quickly reached over to help her haul her next catch out of the water. The enormous Lanturn rumbled in agitation until Marshall reached up and removed the hook from its mouth.[break][break]

"Are you some kind of fishing expert?!" he exclaimed, laughing. And then his own fishing rod shuddered as the line went taut.[break][break]

When @marshall suggests the idea of going camping together, Lia finds herself smiling at the thought, and when he says he could take her for a ride on his motorcycle, she actually beams in the most radiant and honest way possible.

”Really? I’d love that! It sounds like it’d be so fun.” Fun, exciting, and maybe just a little scary too. But, before she can finish expressing all these thoughts and also tell him that she really likes camping, the massive Lanturn that bites her lure distracts them from the conversation. This time, Marshall helps without her even asking him to, and Lia suddenly feels intensely aware of his hands next to hers on the fishing rod, as well as of just how close to her he is throughout it all.

Rosy hues inevitably colour her cheeks, but in the chaos of the whole situation, laughter rises without her even meaning for it.

”Not at all! I swear I had never even gone fishing before.” It’s true, and it makes all this even more shocking. Is it bad that she also feels kind of proud, though? It’s silly, but Lia does love winning, even at things that have never even been of interest to her. Perhaps that’s why the words spoken just as she reels in a much smaller fish shouldn’t be all that surprising:

”Maybe I’m just a natural.” Looking at him, she smirks playfully. ”Want some tips?”

The way Lia's smile lit up her face at the mention of riding his motorcycle flooded Marshall with such a giddy feeling that his heartbeat continued to race even after the encounter with the Lanturn. He hid his nerves as best he could, waving a dismissive hand at her offer to give him tips. His grin, however, expressed just how much he was teasing her.[break][break]

"I've fished plenty of times," he lied. He'd only gone a few times before his dad gave up on trying to teach Marshall how to sit still. "I know beginner's luck when I see it. Look, see? You're already running out of it."[break][break]

As if to prove his point, Marshall hauled another Mantine out of the water, a normal one that time. After releasing the hook from its mouth, he patted the Pokémon on the back to reassure it that it was no longer in danger.[break][break]

"So, I never asked, what do you do, Lia?" he asked as he took his seat next to her, hyper aware of the closeness of their bodies. "Up in Lilycove, I mean."[break][break]

He may be right about her beginner’s luck, but that sure doesn’t stop Lia from pouting just the tiniest bit right there. It only lasts a moment, though, because when watching him pat the Mantine he had just caught as if to reassure it that it's out of harm, she can’t help but smile in that gentle and soft manner that is so typical of her.

”Nah ah. You’ll see, I’m just letting you catch up to keep things interesting.” She teases, as if this were to justify the fry-sized Magikarp she reels in next. It’s a tiny thing, and inevitably, the contrast between it and the huge Barraskewda and Lanturn gets a light laugh out of her. ”Marshall, did you just jinx me?!”

Still smiling, Lia carefully releases the tiny Magikarp from the hook, cupping it in her hands and leaning closer to the water in order to release it. It’s while watching it swim away that she answers his question:

”Uhmm… Well, I’m a historian and I have a ranger licence, but I mostly do work for the Lilycove museum – going to gather artefacts and what not. I used to be assistant curator in Slateport, but I find travelling all over the region and going to all sorts of ruins to be much more fun than just sitting in the museum all day.” She turns to look at him, golden eyes meeting his. ”Bet it sounds totally nerdy, huh?”

The last thing she wants is for Marshall to think she’s boring or something, but to be honest, there’s nothing Lia is more proud of than of her profession. It's important to her.

Marshall laughed at Lia's accusation and stuck his tongue out at her again. "All's fair in love and fishing!" he exclaimed, feeling his ears grow hot — not simply because of the dumb cliché but because he'd said the 'L' word in her presence.[break][break]

By Arceus, he felt like a teenager again.[break][break]

To hide his embarrassment and the blush on his face, Marshall focused on reeling in yet another Mantine (or maybe it was the same one as before?!) while Lia explained what she did for a living. He tried to imagine her life as she described it: walking through the stately halls of museums, bending over old things with a magnifying glass, poring over books, trekking around ruins dressed like a famous explorer.[break][break]

It was unsurprising to him that Lia was such an intelligent, competent, and curious woman. She exuded a maturity that he admittedly lacked, even though she obviously knew how to have fun, too. And on top of that, she seemed to care for her appearance, the opposite of a stereotypical nerd. Not that he cared so much about that. But it helped that she was so pretty.[break][break]

Honestly, could anyone be more perfect?[break][break]

"I think it sounds totally amazing," Marshall said without a hint of mockery. "You must have a lot of responsibility, but in a way that's still really exciting and lets you have fun. That's an ideal life, I think. Doing what you love."[break][break]

For some reason, even though Lia doesn’t completely understand it, the way he smiles at her causes a giddying feeling to wash over her. It makes her happy, truly and undoubtedly, and as if a mirrored image, she finds herself smiling as well.

”Thanks, Marshall. You’re really sweet, you know?” She means it, but as she says it, she can feel the heat of a blush rising to her cheeks, and turning away so this won’t be completely obvious, she gently tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Like a nervous habit.

She does understand it, doesn’t she? It’s that she likes him. That much is obvious to her by now, but even though the thought comes easily while looking at the water, it only serves to make her more nervous about being on this boat with him. Why had she thought inviting him to come fishing with her would be a good idea?! It’s like the lamest thing ever.

Reeling in the Wishiwashi serves to distract Lia from all these thoughts, and she does wonder if it's the same one she had caught earlier.

”So… What does the winner get?” Lia asks him then, and when she does, she grins while meeting his gaze. This is a competition, after all. It’s only fair that there’s a prize.

Although, admittedly, she’s mostly just trying to keep herself distracted.

Lia's compliment makes Marshall's smile turn into a fully fledged grin. He always tried to be a nice person, but to have a girl call him 'sweet' was new. It gave him a boost of extra energy as he reeled in his next catch, a Whiscash. The fish looked so silly that he laughed even as he unhooked it from his line.[break][break]

Then he sat back in the boat and thought about Lia's question. It was obvious she was winning their little game, having caught two Dynamax-sized Pokémon already. He considered what could be fair but also hilarious for the loser.[break][break]

"We could do something simple, like… whoever loses has to pay for the winner's lunch," Marshall replied after a moment of serious contemplation. "Or we could do something more exciting. Winner gets to challenge the loser to a dare."[break][break]
