today, the desk of lilycove's ranger captain finds itself unoccupied for a change as he ventures out into the wilderness for both an escape and an opportunity to meet some of the newer recruits.[break][break]

he approaches with a smile, finally arriving on the scene. ahead of them lies a path that no doubt leads to the fighting-type pokemon as reports have stated.[break][break]

Julia had to admit she was a bit nervous about working directly with a Ranger Captain. But more than that, she was excited! She'd actually get to see a captain in action and see what kinds of techniques and Pokémon he used. Of course, Julia wasn't just planning to watch. As always, she was going to give this mission her all. What was the point if she didn't?

[break][break]She was doing some simple stretches to keep her energy in check when the captain finally arrived. "It's nice to meet you, Captain Vollans!" she said, reaching for a handshake. "I'm excited to be working with you today." He seemed nice, which helped tamp down those bits of nervousness that Julia still held.

[break][break]"I have, yeah! Though usually it's just one or two defending their territory or some scared Pokémon lashing out." She hadn't dealt with something like this before: two troupes of Fighting-type Pokémon were getting into increasingly violent clashes over resources that were affecting the other Pokémon of the habitat. Naturally, the Rangers had been dispatched to stop them, and Julia was lucky enough to be part of this mission.

"So I've heard," Julia said with a nod. She realized her speech was a bit more formal than usual, but that was probably the best for now. This was work, after all. She followed the Vespiquen down the path and deeper into the wilderness.

[break][break]"Hmm..." She hadn't expected to be put on the spot like this, but she didn't let it bother her much. "Well, first we have to know why they're fighting, right? If it's resources, maybe we can help with that. Though I guess we should calm them down first. Lazuli, my Lapras, is good at that. Just be ready to cover your ears so you don't fall asleep." She recalled how Lazuli's Sing had calmed a net full of trapped Carvanha and Sharpedo so they didn't hurt each other trying to escape. Maybe something similar could work here?

"good line of thinking! yes, we first step is to see if we can calm them down first. we won't be able to investigate otherwise."[break][break]

because they'd just get rushed and possibly have their heads punched off before they can find out why the packs were fighting in the first place.[break][break]

eventually, the packs come into sight, and they are just as restless as previously described. a primeape rushes across to throw a BRICK BREAK at a passimian.[break][break]

Julia beamed. If a Ranger Captain said her plan was good, then it must have been. Not that Julia thought her plan was bad or anything; she'd just half-expected Captain Vollans to find some kind of hole in it that she hadn't even considered. But he hadn't, so she was even better at this than she thought she was!

[break][break]When the two packs came into view, they were already fighting. The Primeape hooted and hollered angrily as they threw themselves at their opponents. The Passimian were more organized, taking orders from one in the higher branches that appeared to be their leader. Hard berries went flying with Fling, and any Primeape that got too close was treated to a Close Combat. Neither side seemed to have the upper hand here. Although the Passimian troop was well-organized, the Primeape were tenacious and literally too angry to give up.

[break][break]Time to put her plan into action.

[break][break]While the packs were absorbed in their fighting, Julia sent out Lazuli. "Quick, use Sing!" she ordered. Lazuli nodded, turned to the two fighting groups, and began her soothing song. The winds carried its notes to the combatants, who perked up at the strange new sound. The Passimian leader hissed out an order, which the rest of the troop rose to follow, but one by one, they grew sluggish as sleepiness seeped into their skin. The leader tried to get their attention, but she, too, was beginning to doze off.

[break][break]Perfect! Julia's plan was working! She turned to the Primeape, expecting to see similar results... but less than half of them had even grown sluggish. The rest just looked angrier, the veins on their heads twitching as blood rushed through them. Oh. Oh, that wasn't good.

[break][break]With a cacophony of enraged screeching, the remaining Primeape ran at Lazuli.

as expected, the group of passimian starts to fall asleep from the SING, and as lance turns to the group of primeape expecting the exact same thing, he is surprised at the sight of them rushing towards them.[break][break]

"oops."[break][break]

he should've accounted for their anger.[break][break]

"cover us, queen!"[break][break]

vespiquen flutters forward, body glimmering with a DEFENSE ORDER only to send an AIR SLASH barreling towards the group a moment later. it hits the majority of the primeape, knocking them back, but some continue on, reaching julia's lapras in time for a BRICK BREAK.

"Oops," Julia echoed, though she hadn't expected that to be the Captain's response. He was quick to react, sending his Vespiquen to protect Lazuli with Defend Order. Unfortunately, not all of the Primeape were deterred; some shot past Queen's Air Slash and leapt at Lazuli with their Brick Breaks.

[break][break]"Lazuli!" Julia tried to call out an order, but the Lapras's pained cry cut her short. "It's okay; come on back!" The injured Lapras vanished in her Poké Ball's red recall beam, and the Primeape turned their fury to Julia. Luckily, she had backup: "Your turn, Chester!"

[break][break]The Dodrio's three heads squawked, the right the loudest, at the remaining Primeape. The Pig Monkey Pokémon screeched and hooted in turn, their anger reaching a fever pitch, and charged at their new opponent. Julia held her breath for a moment.

[break][break]"Now, Drill Peck!"

[break][break]Chester drew his heads back and then thrusted them forward in three different directions, his beaks spinning like drills. The attacks collided, and though Chester flinched, the Primeape took the worst of it, jumping back with further screeching. They were scattered and weakened now.

while lance could've (and maybe should've) called out more pokemon to control the situation, he doesn't only because he wants to see how his cadet reacts to pressure. not to his surprise, she steps up, and he watches her dodrio DRILL PECK the primeape away.[break][break]

for good measure, vespiquen sends a wave of ATTACK ORDER as her little bugs buzz forward, scaring them away as well.[break][break]

"well! that was easy."[break][break]

a job well done. except they still need to investigate.[break][break]

"well done, cadet davis. your dodrio's powerful."

Julia beamed proudly at both her work and the praise. Chester's middle head tilted up with the same pride with its eyes closed and beak partially open in a facsimile of a smile.

[break][break]"Thank you, Captain Vollans," she said, unable to hide her joy at hearing that. "He's been my partner since I was a kid, so we've had a lot of time to train together."

[break][break]With the Primeape pushed back, Julia turned to check on the Passimian pack. Most of them were still fast asleep, but a few had started to stir, looking confused. "We should probably hurry and investigate," Julia said. It was times like these that she wished she could talk to Pokémon and just ask them why they were fighting. "Let's see... I guess we can check if there's enough food growing around here first?"

It didn't take more than a cursory examination of the area to see that the issue wasn't food. There were plenty of trees for everyone, too, with enough space for the two troops to stay apart and not get into Primeape-rage-induced fights.

[break][break]"Yeah, something's gotta be up... but what?"

[break][break]The way Lance said "detect" flicked on a lightbulb in Julia's head. "I've got just the 'mon for the job." She reached down and clicked the button on Spot's Poké Ball to release him. "Spot, use your aura sight. See if you can find anything weird around here."

[break][break]The Lucario turned to face the forest and closed his eyes for a moment. A faint blue glow outlined him, and his black head appendages began to rise. When he opened his eyes again, they were glowing that same faint blue. He reached out with his aura to sense any other auras in the forest around them. Naturally, he felt the remaining Primeape and Passimian, still shaking off their drowsiness, as well as Julia, Lance, Chester, and Queen. He tightened his focus, moving past them in search of anything unfamiliar.

it won't take long for lucario's aura sight to detect an anomaly. something strange, fierce, and definitely territorial when it has no reason to be here. it's just a shame that the vespiquen doesn't see it coming in time.[break][break]

a very large rillaboom comes bursting out of the trees, slamming right into the vespiquen before flinging it back towards lance.[break][break]

it looks right at the lucario, roaring as it pounds on its chest.[break][break]

Spot's eyes narrowed at the aggressive feelings coming from the strange new aura. Then it began to charge. His ears perked up, and he turned his head to bark a warning. It didn't come fast enough, though, and the Rillaboom that burst out of the trees managed to grab Queen and toss her out of the fray. That thing was huge!

[break][break]"It's gotta be!" Julia agreed. And now, it had its fierce sights set on Spot. "Spot, Detect! Chester, Swords Dance!"

[break][break]The Rillaboom raised a fist, then brought it down toward Spot in a Hammer Arm. The blue glow in Spot's eyes intensified for a moment, allowing him to Detect the incoming move and jump out of the way. Behind him, Chester cawed with all three heads and tapped his feet on the ground, summoning illusory blue swords that spun around him. The swords pointed at the Dodrio before vanishing, and then a red aura raced up his body, strengthening him. The Rillaboom, too engrossed in its rage to notice, growled its frustration, then raised its other fist to try again.

[break][break]"Now, Chester, Lunge!"

[break][break]This time, only the right head cawed as Chester leapt at his opponent, beak glowing green with Bug-type energy. Once he was close enough, he thrust the glowing beak into the Rillaboom's chest, causing it to stumble back with a roar.
