she saw him look down and, despite the way it curled her lips, her arms folded over scarred ribs. it might’ve just looked like she was cold, and she was that too.

danny had seen her body on days at the beach—but during those times, his attraction hadn’t occurred to her. now, she knew he was looking, and there was no forgiving cover of summer night to swathe her in security.

it wasn’t until she felt the good feelings he created in her with a glance that she realized how newly vulnerable she was.

”yeah, me too… thanks, dan.”

her gaze lingered with a smile. part of her felt compelled to assure him she didn’t want to affect their friendship either, wanted to ask him if they’d still be the same in the morning. instead, she was quiet before looking past him, still planted awkwardly in the same spot while she waited for an invitation.

”the water looks hot.”

huh. no one's really called him dan before even if it is his nickname. danny has always felt more like a nickname than a name, but he finds that he quite likes dan. maybe it's just because of her.[break][break]

again, he doesn't realize it until it's too late.[break][break]

at the mention of the water, he turns, then nods, surprised at how quickly it had warmed up.[break][break]

"oh! uh, yeah."[break][break]

he pulls open the glass door, then gestures in.[break][break]

"after you."

for the first time in maybe ever—or at least a very long time, she found herself feeling shy. nonetheless, her arms dropped and she crossed the floor, brushing past him with a smile as she stepped in.

”thanks.”

the water soothed away goosebumps and nerves. she stood under, briefly letting the heat run through cold damp hair before pushing it back and stepping out of the way. her eyes looked for him, and then for soap. she started to wash.

usually, she wasn’t so quiet. words just wouldn’t rise to the surface, regardless of how many jumbled in a mess in her head.

as the alcohol in his system continues to seep away, he finds himself feeling more nervous than maybe he should have been. he quickly discards his pants and steps into the shower, finding her gaze before returning her smile.[break][break]

this feels far more intimate than what they had done in the ocean. but he finds that he much prefers this.[break][break]

water starts to wash over him as well, brief as he gathers some soap in his hands.[break][break]

it did feel intimate; certainly not any more than in the ocean, though. for nina, their drunken entanglement in those soft waves had been the closest she’d ever been to anyone.

she became more at ease under his gaze, if only for the way her attention lingered like beads of water on his shape. in her eyes, fascination glimmered nebulously.

his nerves are well hidden behind his smile as he reaches out for her, soapy hands finding her shoulders. they trail, sliding down before he eventually bends to a knee to work on her legs.[break][break]

for some reason, she hadn’t expected him to wash all of her—much less bend onto a knee. she felt pampered. there was a strange sort of blissful sensation she wasn’t accustomed to.

she obliged his request, turning away from him and pulling slicked hair forward over her shoulder. her eyes closed, and with insecurities faded by his touch, she found herself only craving more.

nina definitely hadn’t expected him to lower to a knee that second time, and a blush rose to her face. she’d met few men who could make her feel like this, and she had never expected danny to be one of them.

nonetheless, as he finished up washing, it was over too soon. she turned, color still tinting her cheeks.

”thanks.” and after a second, she asked him the same question. ”do you need help?”

this up close, it's hard not to notice the pink tinting her cheeks, though he's not sure whether it's from him or the heat. he thinks it's the latter, playing it safe.[break][break]

when the same is asked of him, he hesitates, suddenly feeling a lot shyer.[break][break]

she reached out for more soap, lathering, and hands went for skin. still, she was quiet, maybe waiting for him to break the silence first, or maybe just enjoying it with him. her eyes followed her fingers, paying attention under the light.

in much the same manner that he had, she soon lowered to a knee. however, once she’d finished washing him from this angle, she lingered there briefly, eyeing up at him. there was something she hadn’t been able to do in the ocean–but in the aforementioned interest of conserving water, she refrained from asking.

a moment later, she stood.

"turn please."

the silence continues as he waits, not wanting to say anything to ruin the moment.

taking more soap, she lathered and smoothed it over his back. she didn’t have to kneel a second time, because she’d been able to reach around to the rest of him just fine before. danny was thorough, but his method had seemed inefficient—not that she hadn’t enjoyed it.

”okay, done.”

with that, soapy arms were run under the shower. remaining suds spiraled down into the drain, and she stepped out of the way.

after a quick rinse, he turns the shower off, then pushes the glass door open before reaching up for their towels. he offers one to her.[break][break]

"i enjoyed that a lot."

for a couple of terrorists, they were incredibly polite, really.

she took the towel, drying off and soon wrapping it around herself.

finally, after it had hung in her head for several minutes, she said, ”y’know, don’t do this very often.” at all. ever.
