shortly after danny drifted back off to sleep, nina woke up to find herself against him. she froze, wondering if he was awake, and not daring to look up and ruin it.

as she lied there feigning sleep, she stared into the dim morning sunlight. it illuminated the soft blush on her cheeks as she thought about the night prior.

danny hall. of all people.

maybe he’d wake up, and they’d just laugh it all off, and she’d pretend she hadn’t been lying so close to him on purpose.

eventually, he wakes up once again to find her lying so close to him. even in his drowsy state, he thinks of how she's yet to move away, though the possibility exists that she might not have woken up yet.[break][break]

he exhales a warm breath, not quite wanting the moment to end even if it is now a new day. he has until she wakes up, maybe, so he stays where he is for now.[break][break]

actually, he shifts a little closer, then closes his eyes once again.[break][break]

his alarm rings shortly after that, likely snapping both of them out of the moment.

the alarm made her jump, perhaps obvious that she’d been awake the entire time. she could only hope he’d been asleep, and that she could play it off as though this had been some cute accident.

tentatively, she turned her head towards him, doing her best to look like she’d just woken up. sleepy, with just a touch of surprise, but it didn't look unpleasant.

”good morning.”

she stayed there, for a short moment. there was a thought behind her eyes, something not acted on or spoken, before she turned away and rose into the morning light. still in his clothes, she stretched and looked out the window. the ocean hadn't been so visible the night before.

”this view is so nice.”

danny's usual reaction to his ringing alarm is to groan, flip over, and randomly slap around until he hits the snooze button. he can't do that this time as he wasn't sleeping, so he simply rolls over and hits the snooze button on his first attempt (a rare feat).[break][break]

when he rolls back around, he smiles, remembering that he has to pretend like he had just woken up.[break][break]

"morning, morning."[break][break]

he watches her get up, fixed in place as he admires the way the morning light seems to highlight her features.[break][break]

"yeah, it really is."[break][break]

"did you sleep well?"

nina turned from the window to smile and found him staring. cute—and that was maybe the wrong thought to have. the apocalypse was fogging her judgment.

”yeah. really well.”

and part of her wanted to just climb back into bed with him, because he looked so cozy still lying there, but she didn’t. she lingered near the window, wondering how imminent breakfast might be. she’d agreed to that much.

”what about you?”

she found herself unable to keep from smiling a little at his response. she was thankful when he looked away to yawn into his pillow.
the mention of breakfast was a relief. they could speed this along.

”okay. i’m hungry, then.” she grinned. ”can i help?” she hoped so. since that day making eggs with GABRIEL BLACK, her confidence was up. she hadn't gotten to show off to anyone yet.

eggs and toast sounded perfect, and exciting even, because she knew how to cook eggs now. but what was he going to do?

he pulls out the carton and places it on the counter next to them. he gestures up at various cabinets, speaking as he does so.[break][break]

"the bowls and pans and stuff can be found here and here. i'll work on the rest of our breakfast, then!"[break][break]

the rest of their breakfast includes toasting the bread, washing the rocket, and he goes the extra step to make a garlic aioli spread that he imagines would compliment the dish well.

she got to work pulling out various kitchenware. cabinets revealed a pan, a bowl, for scrambling—for her, at least. a fork came after, set into the bowl, and then a spatula off to to the side. butter and a knife.

getting the pan hot on the oven, she asked with a smile cast over her shoulder, ”how do you like your eggs?”

despite the clear intimacy of the moment, there is still distance between them from things left unsaid. he doesn't want to address it at the moment so he lets it linger, doing his best not to mind it as he sticks some bread into the toaster.[break][break]

"scrambled, please."[break][break]

with the bread toasting, he moves to prepare the rockets, washing them under the sink briefly before shifting to plate them.[break][break]

it does not take him long until the plates are ready, each one with toast, rocket to the side, as well as a dollop of garlic aioli.[break][break]

”that’s how i like them too.”

she was aware of the intimacy; but she was used to doing this, with different people. roommates. targets. bosses… a now danny, whatever he was to her now. a friend. a crush, maybe, however much she’d try to deny it.

the eggs were scrambled and the bread was toasted. when he was ready, she added, ”these are done too.” and joined him in plating, sliding eggs into place.

she smiled, ”it looks really good. thanks.” and took her plate to the table.

his breakfast is dug into. he enjoys every bite and every flavor that comes with it. he likes the eggs especially.[break][break]

and after a bit, he remembers something that threatens to pull him away from the moment. from their little bubble even if it shouldn't feel like one.[break][break]

"shit i uh, forgot i have an assignment all the way in mossdeep later this afternoon."[break][break]

"probably have to leave soon."

she smiled, though it was soon hidden behind a bite of eggs. they were good. she was pleased with herself, and also more than a bit pleased that he was eating her cooking, and was happy about it. it was something she had somehow only recently picked up in her days of trying—and succeeding—to woo people to their financial dooms.

everything was new, refreshing, and warm. for a minute, she’d almost decided she didn’t want to rush out. maybe lingering wouldn’t be so bad.

responsibilities called, however. rocket work. suddenly, she felt disappointment she hadn’t expected. ”oh.” and it was there in her voice, despite herself. ”okay. i can get out of here after breakfast.” a smile was to assure that it was fine.
