if danny is to ever find out about what her attacker had once said to her, he'd tell her they were wrong. that they should go rot in a hole for ever doing something like that in the first place. but he doesn't know, so for now, he loses himself in the moment.[break][break]

she kissed him back, and when he pulled away, she only found herself longing. his eyes found hers, while her own briefly lingered on his lips.

he’d wanted this? why hadn’t it occurred to her before?

”really?”

there wasn’t a lot of time taken for consideration before she asked him then, ”do you want more?”

were they doing this right here? honestly, she didn’t want to wait. the apocalypse might’ve very well been on the horizon, and it was dark for now, and there was no one around, and they could always move on if they wanted.

she became more breathless herself against his lips. soon enough, she was pulling him towards the concealing depths of slightly deeper water again.

once in deeper waters, she rose too. the surface came up a bit higher on her, lapping against the tops of her shoulders.

when his touch returned, she stepped closer, colorful gaze heavy. her own hands wandered as well, one soon slipping around the back of his neck, and the other drifting somewhere lower in the water.

she trailed kisses under his ear.

”yes.”

with nothing else left to say, he returns the kiss, indulging in her taste and company.[break][break]

so, connected with one another, they find themselves in waters that push and pull, though never quite overpower. waves rise and fall and crash only for another one to do the same. and another. and another.[break][break]

by the end of it, he's catching his breath, forehead resting against hers while his hands cup the sides of her face. he holds her close, still.

waves crashed, and down his skin, she whispered uninhibited sweet nothings. eventually, the water settled a little more, and she melted in his embrace. a blissful haze washed over.

”that was really nice.” and to think she’d never considered it before until that night.

but what now? where would this put them? would it be awkward? questions would hit in the morning. for now, she caught her breath, forehead pressed to his. close.

it was a first for her, to be held by someone who knew the real nina. not annie, or any other of the array of personas that she’d been assigned over the years. there was a dangerous comfort in it.

her gaze met his, and she didn’t immediately consider how it could lead to more. peeling herself off his bed in the morning and never thinking about it again would be easy enough, surely, for she had spent her whole life detached. one night couldn’t hurt.

with a smile, she nodded, ”yeah. i’d like that.”

he slips his hand into hers, nodding once before leading her out of the waters, towards the shore, then eventually to his place of residence. their bubble never pops; it holds through all of it.[break][break]

it's a short walk to his place. the door opens to reveal a small but cozy apartment by the beach. with the windows open, the smell of the sea wafts in without trouble.[break][break]

warm lights flick on as he steps further in.[break][break]

"i never knew surfing would be so tiring. i'm exhausted."

hand-in-hand they went, and when they arrived, she was impressed with the location.

”you live on the beach? so jealous.” verdanturf didn’t have enough water for her liking, but the gang was there.

moving further into his apartment, she was perfectly at ease, as though she’d been there many times before.

”surfing, huh?” maybe danny had surfed before their mission, or maybe he was being funny. nonetheless, the teasing in her smile was soon lost to a yawn, and she was agreeing, ”yeah, i’m sleepy...”

”can i take a shower though? or...” her eyes narrowed, lips pursed as she considered briefly. ”should we take one together?” to save water.

actually, danny's just renting the place off airbnb as he needed a place to stay for the splashfest. but he finds slateport beach to be a really nice spot to live. her reaction has him thinking that maybe he'll be extending his stay after all.[break][break]

"oh! uh, yes, i think we should take one together."[break][break]

to save water, of course.[break][break]

"it's this way."[break][break]

his hand finds the small of her back as he leads them into the bathroom, walking briefly through the living room and the bedroom.[break][break]

inside, he strips his shirt off, tossing it into the laundry basket before reaching in to turn on the shower. the water slowly starts to heat up.[break][break]

"or do you prefer cold showers?"

if only nina had known how her opinion could sway his living decisions.

the unsure look on her face slowly faded into a smile, her voice uncharacteristically bashful when she replied, ”okay. cool.”

once in the bathroom, she began to undress again, peeling off her shirt. it had been half-dampened by salty, tangled hair, making the ocean breeze feel colder on the way over.

”nope. hot’s great.” after the chill, she wanted to warm up.

something about looking in the mirror then, however briefly, was a little sobering. in a moment, she had a heavier realization that there might be an effect on their friendship because of what had happened. because of what was continuing to happen.

but she was enjoying it, and she could overthink it tomorrow instead. once all her clothes sat on the counter, she stepped towards him and the shower, and persisted despite herself.

”so... you said you had wanted to kiss me for a while.” after a pause, she asked curiously, ”why didn't you?”
