she chewed on her toast, listening, watching as he circled back around. it was cute. despite her disappointment, her smile remained.

did she have plans later? she wanted to say no, let’s watch a movie or something, but instead, she decided that yes, of course she had plans. an enterprising girl like her was never free on the fly. she had things to do, and those things did not include falling for danny hall.

what were the things, then? over the years, she’d developed plenty of excuses. an entirely vague one slipped easily, ”i actually have to go help a friend with something later.”

a pause, as her heart pulled her back in the other direction. ”but… i’ll text you. maybe we can hang out again soon?”

vague and nondescript likely done on purpose to make it clear to him that there are still boundaries between them. he doesn't push any further, though it's not as though he had pushed much in the first place. or at all, really.[break][break]

”sounds good.” when they were both free. despite herself, she hoped it would be sooner than later.

at his sweet words, she felt herself withdrawing a bit. yet, she couldn’t bring herself to reject his opening up to her.

”yeah, i like it too.” trust, comfort. danny provided unfamiliar sensations that were as intriguing as they were daunting. “thanks for having me.” there was a sparkle in her eye at that second, a hint of moments in the waves with him.

she finished her breakfast, and figured the time was upon them, then.

”okay, well, i’ll get going.”
