Her head slowly nods at the mention of illeana reyes. That would no doubt be the best person to coach Doug. But what would that be like for her? To see her former deity bound to someone else? It is their responsibility to provide training for avatars, but Illeana is more fragile than most, more impulsive. She may not think clearly it put into that situation. Is her duty greater than her spite? That’s an answer Illeana would soon give Eva, leading to their fall out.

Ultimately, she thinks its best to let Illeana decide for herself, “I guess the worst she could say is no,” Eva’s shoulders shrug, “I think it would be better from Doug though,” Eva doesn’t want to play the awkward middle man.

She has too much to do and other things to worry about. Like figuring out an alternative to the meteor situation.

Eva is sure there is a bonding mechanism that links avatar and deity powers. It sparks another question she’s always been curious about, “Does it talk to you?” she glances towards Rayquaza, “Not with words but like . . . I don’t know, maybe with words! I’ve never caught an avatar chatting with its deity though,” she laughs a little picturing Matias having morning coffee with Groudon and talking about their plans for the day.

there are far worse things that could happen than illeana saying no, but matias chooses not to comment on them. it's probably best for eva to find out on her own, anyway, the same way matias had with a slap across his face.[break][break]

he laughs when she does, likely imagining the same scenario in his head.[break][break]

but he has had an experience that feels more like a fever dream than anything. he remembers closing his eyes and opening them to find himself in the void of a cavern they once found in mount chimney, and it's there in the darkess where he finds himself peering at two glowing red eyes.[break][break]

Eva considers his description, relating it to the way she communicates with Blade and her Gardevoir. The high functioning psychic-types in combination with their bond allowed a sense of understanding. Mostly a feeling, the occasional flash of an image. Never something like a fever dream. It renews Eva fascination with the avatar x deity bond. That was part of her original research when she first took up the position of Head Professor. It was soon overpowered by Primal Intoxication and the other horrors Hoenn has faced since then.

“Sounds fascinating,” she comments in a somewhat dreamy tone, “Has it given you any indication of its feelings on . . .” she motions towards the slumbering dragon. It must feel its presence. Groudon, Kyorge, Rayquaza: They were all linked by Primal Energy and Hoenn. She wonders out of curiosity, but also out of a bit of fear. If Groudon harbors ill-intentions, Eva has to know.

even the mention of its name stirs something in the back of his mind. it feels something akin to having to take an order he disagrees with but one he knows he has to do.[break][break]

the dynamic between groudon and rayquaza will need to be explored further. but it's easier to do so with the lizard awake and active. not dormant and close to dead.[break][break]

"i'm not sure. we'll have to try again when it wakes up."[break][break]

Matias’s response doesn’t give Eva much faith. In fact, it only stirs more worry. The doctor has to suppress her emotional response in favor for one that was more logical. Of course, it isn’t certain. They haven’t had the chance to interact in . . . years maybe?

“Yeah, I guess we’ll just have to see,” there’s a nervous tick in her voice that she’s unable to hide. Naturally, Eva feels a protectiveness over the dragon, though she doubts the beast needs her protection. It’s fueled by a pride for her assumptions being right, and the pokemon having the potential by her greatest success story yet. Eva knows they aren’t destined for each other, but that certainly doesn’t mean she cares for it any less.

As if it knows it’s being discuss, the dragon stirs. The pokemon in the clearing all pause, their gaze turning to fix on the dragon as it rises. It’s arms dig into the GRASSY TERRAIN as it turns its body. A single, yellow eye turns to peer at them. For a moment, it’s still. It focuses on the stranger, Matias, for a beat longer.

Its serpentine body uncurls from its shift in position to rest the other side on the grass. It eventually settles back down, this time facing them before it silently resumes its slumber.

finally, the lizard stirs, and matias slowly rises back to his feet almost in sync with it. he meets its gaze, unwavered by the sight of its single, yellow eye, and when it settles back down, a few thoughts come to mind.[break][break]

Eva holds her breath util the dragon settles. She doesn’t realize how much tension she’s holding in her shoulders until it dissipates. She’s more nervous about all this than she thought.

When Matias speaks, she glances over towards him, a flash of red catching her eye, “I think it can,” she agrees, referring to his connection with the land titan. If old reports have taught her anything, Rayquaza has an innate and intense hunger for primal energy.

“That’s uhhhh really good question,” she’s struggled with her answer herself. Ultimately, it’s not up to her. She’s here to heal the dragon, whether it wanted to stay or not is beyond her control. What she feared was The League forcing it to stay. The dragon’s past encounters with The League have been so volatile, she hopes that its rescue and rehabilitation will foster more trust between them. Forcing Rayquaza to stay would certainly shatter that bridge they’ve built.

“I hope it decides to stay and help us,” join its siblings in protecting Hoenn. This is where it belongs, fulfilling its purpose in the skies as the balance between land and sea. One step closer the quilibrium Hoenn has lost.

Eva sighs, reaching up to rub the back of her neck. Her voice drops, as if it can hear her if she speaks too loudly, “To be honest, I don’t know The League’s intentions once it’s healed,” Perhaps even before it’s fully healed, when it feels strong enough, it may just leave. Although the intention was to ask Rayquaza for help, even if it didn’t, she’d still consider it a success. They saved a life that would have otherwise been lost.

With the unsettling amount of reported Team Rocket Avatars, Eva worries for their position in Hoenn. This is a different playing field than it was in Kanto, “I hope so too,” she mutters softly, The League couldn’t afford another renegade avatar they couldn’t count on. A part of her would rather not see the dragon chained by mortal shackles, but it’s the legendary's choice. If it felt ready, then she hoped it would be freya morningstar. Although a renegade herself, the woman has a sense of loyalty, that much was clear when she agreed to go back to that awful place to repay her debt. Call her naïve, but Eva trusted that Freya and Rayquaza’s loyalty would extend to those that helped them both find their peace.

“Use it for future conflicts” doesn’t sound nice to hear. The last thing Eva wanted to do was use it for anything. She hoped it would all be on its own free will. Of course, that would be very hopeful, but Eva can’t help it. She often sets herself up for failure by aiming too high.

Eva’s gaze turns back to Matias as he approaches, meeting his hope with a frown, “I don’t think I’m what it has in mind.”
