Survival rates of those lost at sea turn slim after six hours...

Hoenn's coastguard contacts Nautica, asking for further assistance two hours after a small fishing vessel had been reported missing. It's passengers civilians fleeing Sootopolis after the ruination that had befallen the city prior to the events of the Darkest Day, having not reached their destination at Pacifidlog.

With the promise of providing additional air support, Angelo now stands on the floating town's wooden docks as other volunteers of the search party takes to their boats in a chorus of orders.

His plane is ready to set off and yet he doesn't yet leap into the cockpit. Instead the pilot bides the thinly stretched time by pouring through ocean current readings, wind data and nautical charts.

He's been informed of an additional volunteer, a councilwoman at that, would be arriving at any moment.

Now there's a familiar name...

Acquaintances or not, he'll give her five minutes.

She knew that name rung a few bells the moment she heard it. Casted in a wave of mystery and adventure, the apparently well-known pilot would be her partner for the day, as she tagged along to yet another mission, she was wildly unequipped for.

Easing onto the dock in a pair of beige pants and a white tee, the councilwoman offered a friendly wave to the outgoing search party crew. "Good luck," she called out to their fleeting boats, hand cusped around the right side of her lips. Hopefully they'll find the lost parties soon.

As the last of the first group made their way across the still waters, the woman would turn back to her pilot, a softer smile now gracing her lips. Small, inching steps are made to his side.

"We meet again." Her hands crossed over her chest, "Unfortunately these circumstances are much less fun, but," She leaned forward, hair sliding over shoulder to veil the right side of her face. "I'm glad to see you here."

“Stay sharp. I'll keep you updated over comms,” his voice joins PENELOPE LIVY's own as they see the rest of the search party off. Well wishes and duty called loud enough to chase them over the splashing of churned water.

Angelo is left alongside a woman he'd met once before, many months ago. Familiarity that had danced on the shape of her name proven correct with the sight of burning red hair, caught sharp against the cool contrast of the sea.

They'd met with the waves as a backdrop then, too.

“Good to see you, too. Y'know, despite the circumstances.”

Reports tucked under his arm, Angelo peers towards PENELOPE LIVY with a lazy smile, hands tucking into the pockets of his pants. Their posture comfortable, despite it all.

“I'll take it I made the cut to join your survival-adventure team, then.” He grins.

With a tilt of his chin, the pilot nods towards his plane, encouraging them to walk while recalling their previous topic on the boat to Pinkan island with a pinch of amusement.

“Don't recall you being a councilwoman, though. That new?”

A teasing wink was slipped between her response and her turn toward the plane. As they walked, her fingers would comb through her hair, pulling it up into a high ponytail.

"Yeah, yeah," She smiled, though, a small part of her detest the title. Councilwoman. It sounded so distant, cold. Like a wall of formality built up to separate herself from the very people she worked for. "As of a week ago, I think? Honestly, it's hard to remember." Her hands naturally shove themselves into her pockets as they made it up to the plane. "How about you? Haven't heard too much about Nautica up until now."

An eyebrow lifts.

Honestly, he's somewhat impressed that the new councilwoman was a mere seven days fresh at her role and already braving fieldwork with the locals.

Either she was eager to make an impression on the public or perhaps PENELOPE LIVY could only stomach a week in the stuffy confines of an office before she had to escape?

“Well you've survived your first week. I'd say that's a good sign,” his lips seem to stretch a little more playfully at the sight of her wink, a mock bow of formality giving chase. “Congrats, councilwoman.”

When they both reach the side of the plane, Angelo reaches up to open the heft metal door, holding it open so Penelope can clamber up the stairs.

“Ah, that'll be cause Nautica is a new face on the block, too. Like yourself. We've been active for about two months or so - set up just in time for Splashfest.”

Angelo's expression softens, then. Pride dripping off a smile.

Barely entering post-Aqua Initiative has been a nightmare itself. From the looming threat of a region-shattering meteor, to the now stressed-out League members, her rise to council was a far cry from a smooth transition. But alas, that wasn't something she could confide to him, or anyone else for that matter. Besides the occasional rants she'd give off to a poor, unsuspecting CIAN MAHER , her lips were forced shut on the matter.

Thankfully, the conversation came to a pass, as a new venture took up the spotlight.

"Congratulations to you as well, then. You must be excited."

With a hefty push-up, the woman barely managed to climb into the aircraft, arms still weak from the numerous endeavors she'd been putting herself through thanks to VALOR. Once inside, she would slip into the most obvious seat for herself and await for him to follow before continuing the conversation. "So tell me more. I'd love to hear about it."

“It's been a... crazy few months.”

Angelo watches as she hoists herself into the cockpit, waiting until she was settled in the co-pilot seat before taking to the stairs himself. It's an effortless climb, done with one hand still gripping his papers as he climbs inside.

He flashes Penelope a grin as he slips into the pilot seat. “But I am. I like the challenge.”

Starting a joint company with his wife had certainly been a decision that had seen its fair share of trails. From many sleepless nights, seeing their home overtaken by mountains of paperwork to one too many arguments about what colour the office walls should be painted.

But every time Angelo walks into the office in Lilycove, every time he sees the Nautica patch stitched onto his jacket sleeve, there's a swell of pride there for what they'd made together.

Comparable to when he'd slipped his pilot license card into his wallet sleeve for the first time.

A new adventure had been forged. One made with skyler dross.

“Where to start?” He chuckles. “Primarily we deal in marine and coastal services. Things like recovery and the transport of cargo, but we accompany researchers and the like on their excursions, too.”

As Angelo tells Penelope a snippet of what Nautica handles, his hands sort through his papers, seeking out the map that he'd earlier scribbled over. There's an area circled in thick red pen.

“Navigation. I personally locate and chart islands, for clients and for myself. We scout them out, too.” He glances up, sweeping a hand to the glittering ocean blue beyond the windows. “And there's search and rescue. List goes on.”

The pilot's prideful joy was infectious. A genuine, wide smile crawled its way up the sides of her face as she intently listened to the explanation. She'd be lying if she didn't say part of her joy sprung from the fact that her intuition was right all those nights ago; this man was far from your average, dreamy-eyed boy. He kept true to his word, and to his imagination.

Settling into her seat, she continued to listen to the tail-end of the pilot's little spiel, using the time to buckle herself up and readjust the mufflers placed over her ears. This hadn't been her first time flying -- far from it, actually -- but that didn't make her a pro. So, beyond the occasional tip and reminder to the report sent in, her part in this search and rescue wouldn't be able to extend far beyond her own set eyes for a while. "You must have an extensive list of contacts," She commented. From search and rescue missions to private escorts to undocumented island-- such an extensive menu had to come from orders provided. Who is casting them in, she wondered.

"Any run-ins with local celebrities yet? Or some interesting personalities?" It was a question guised as a tease, as every word from this point onward held some level of intention.

Amusement takes the form of a soft exhale through his nose and lips quirked in a lopsided smile, making no steps to deny Penelope's comment. “One of the many perks of partnership. Her friends become my friends.”

Extensive may be a little generous but the merging of Skyler's clientele with his own under the Nautica banner had certainly proven advantageous. Having brought two, already existing contact lists of happy clients to their small, fledgling company of two.

After the the system is brought to life with the attentive, routine flicks of buttons, Angelo slots his papers into the storage pockets on the door interior. No longer needing them after setting up the GPS, it'll take them to the area their lost boat may likely be. From there, it was down to their own observation.

Somehow, Angelo doesn't think they'd be lacking in sharp eyes today.

He's slipping on his headset when Penelope's question hums in his ears. Playful. Probing.

“One or two. Think you'd be harder pressed to not run into a celebrity in Hoenn, lately.”

Angelo smiles. Secrecy of who hidden, tauntingly dangled before her, on the crinkled corner of sharp blue eyes.

“Case and point, my co-pilot today is a fresh off the press councilwoman. And a HBS reporter on top of that, right? I'd say that's a pretty interesting run-in.”

No, this cockpit wasn't lacking in sharp eyes today.

Nor ears, he shouldn't forget.

The natural diversion earned itself a laugh. She half expected a response like that, anyways.

"Ex-report," she corrected him, eyes now flicking back toward the open oceans before them. The sheer vastness of open waters always managed to send a shiver down her spine. She couldn't even begin to imagine how what that person was feeling right now, isolated in such a deadly terrain. "Couldn't really keep running the show as a councilwoman -- conflict of interest and all that."

It was a shame, given how much blood, sweat, and tears went into that damned position of hers. It hurt like hell to finally give it up, but how could she expect to create any level of change without allowing some level of loss to pave her way? She only prayed it'd be worth it in the end.

Leaning forward, Penelope couldn't help herself from further looking down toward the glistening water below. A few water types could be seen skidding on top of the waves, causing her to grin before glancing back at him. "You can really see everything from up here."

“Guess you got a point. Shame, though.”

Unknowingly, Angelo mirrors the sentiment Penelope keeps to herself as they take to the sky, leaving behind Pacifidlog and reporter titles alike.

Angelo knew a thing or two about giving up dreams and sacrifices. Years spent putting others before himself. Now that he'd finally started striving for his own wants, reaching for stars to claim for his own, he doesn't think he would've let go.

Good on PENELOPE LIVY though, he supposed. But he probably would've gotten greedy...

“Right? It never gets old, being up here.”

Even though Angelo keeps them beneath the clouds to maintain visibility of the ocean surface, it's still bright, sunshine dazzling off white cloud and glittering off the waves.

Before them the blue is vast. Endless. Above and below. He meets Penelope's grin with one of his own, agreeing in more ways than she'd probably imagine.

“We're comin' up to the estimated coordinates. Give or take five minutes. Boat's white and red, apparently - if it's around there, it should stick out.” The pilot says as he slips on a pair of sunglasses, voice crackling through the headset feed. “So, what tempted you to pack up the reporter gig for a League job?”

Below them the ocean shows no signs of life, expect from the wild pokémon, playfully cresting above the waves. It looks like they'd gotten here before the other search vessels.

There was a freeing sensation that came with taking flight. One begins to feel weightless amongst the clouds, like a breeze wafting above the water, or an avian slicing through the clear blue above. Ever since her first ever flight across Hoenn, the councilwoman always had this soft spot for the adventurous hobby. It's why, when she first heard of Nautica, her initial reaction was one of envy, then of interest, not the other way around.

Red and white -- an easy enough color combination to spot against the blinding spread of blue. Leaning to her right, she started surveying the water early, jumping from shadowy dot to shadowy dot along their flight over. It wasn't until the pilot struck her with a question that she thought to turn back toward him.

Why did she decide to make the plunge, huh?

Honestly, if they were any closer, she would've expected this question much sooner than it actually came. To go from shouting of the organization's corrupt foundation to actively supporting it was quite the change in perspective. To an embarrassing extent.

"I got tired of waiting."

She frowned.

"I thought, with HBS, I could induce change. Frankly, I still think I could, but--" Forcing change and bringing it forth were night and day, And, for once, the night's limitations had the woman rushing for the sun. "I didn't want to wait anymore; for people to change, for the situation to get better, for the league to actually care." The faces of current and old members of the organization flashed in her mind. How many of them were there out of obligation, she wondered. "For years, as a reporter, I've been given the opportunity to firsthand witness the repercussions of the league's and Rocket's decisions. And it's tiring -- to see so much, but be able to do so little. So, I thought, 'to hell with it'."

Even though blue remains fixed upon blue, scanning the tiny waves as they blow like grass rippling in the breeze, Angelo listens. Soaking up the words that crackle with frayed, radio distortion edges into his ears.

There, he finds something within PENELOPE LIVY's explanation to latch onto. As if she'd spoken a verse of clarity, breaking through a buzzing swarm of repetitive jargon the pilot is so used to hearing.

This, he thinks, he could understand.

“I don't mind the unexpected,” he chuckles at the new councilwoman's apology, dismissing it with a grin. “'sides, it's not like I've got anywhere else to be.”

And then, for a stretched out beat, he falls silent.

Angelo, too, had been given opportunities to peek through the League's windows as an outsider looking in. To share their meeting tables and accompany them on an exclusive missions. To be fed whispers of scandals that rattles their walls.

He'd defend his home no questions, would lend his aid and offer Nautica's expertise. But it is tiring, he agrees, constantly facing down a cold brick wall.

And unlike Penelope, despite his own grievances, Angelo can't find his own justification to think 'to hell with it'.

He taps his steering wheel beneath calloused, restless palms before a sigh pools from his lips.

“Well, Penelope, you've really gone and given yourself one hell of a mission.”

Perhaps it's more apt to consider it a fool's errand. There's no guarantee the League would change its stripes and yet...

“I'm rooting for you.”

There's nothing insincere about Angelo's smile as he glances over to the ambitious woman in the co-pilot seat - nor the beginnings of respect in his gaze.

“From what I've seen, they're not going to make things easy... but they could do with having someone like you around. Someone who can see an' call them out on their bullshit.” He grins.

The pilot's words was like the smell of incoming rain after a long, dreary drought. They offered no distinct promises, nor guarantees of change, but at the very least, they gave her a reason to believe that despite these continously arid seasons, rain would come, and with it, the blossom of something new.

Resolve solidified in her eyes, Penelope glanced back at him just to respond with a flash of white, all before swiftly returning her gaze onto the oceanfront -- they were still out on a rescue mission, after all. Couldn't stay too distracted.

"You're telling me."

Despite the bitterness that once laced her words, lately, the councilwoman couldn't help her words from bleeding out a trickle of hope.

This mission -- her newfound life goal -- might take years, it might even be impossible.

"But -- and I think we can come to at least agree on this -- " She gave a gesture to the plane itself, hands expanding to point out their surroundings, "what is life without a little adventure?" A chuckle trailed behind her words, "Besides, I can always appreciate a good challenge."

Especially when it was this important to her.
