Settling into a corner booth, they order a cup of earl grey from a waitress walking by and get comfortable as they wait for the arrival of their potential client. From their bag, a book is produced, a novel with a hard blue cover. Innocuous enough–along with the green bookmark that is placed what is meant to seem casually so at the end of the booth’s table. It’s all subtle cues, of course. Any passersby would simply think of it as tossing the marker to the side as he reads in leisure. But to the prospective client, it denotes a matter of sitting at the proper table.[break][break]

A blue book. And in the case of more than one person in the shop having a book of the same color in their possession–a green bookmark placed longways on the table. If they have forgotten, then this is unfortunate for them. Fern has other opportunities that he can seek out. Though he would like very much to secure this deal. They want everything, it seems. At least from the sparse correspondence they’ve exchanged. He didn’t allow it to continue without some form of discreet coding to their written word–it is better to perform this sort of transaction in person.[break][break]

As over the top and, frankly, ridiculous Fern can be, his job is one he takes quite seriously. And so goes to great lengths to keep what he does contained away from the purview of nosy authorities. He is reachable through certain offshoots of the black market. And the print shop he orchestrates is a front, naturally. Only those who know the right words to say are able to shift him away from the simple fact of making printed flyers or assisting in a banner or poster design.[break][break]

And this dedication to the task is exactly why he’s asked to meet this contact away from his shop or residence today. It almost seems a little too good to be true–a whole new identity built to hold more longstanding value than the basic, one-off forgeries he’s more accustomed to undertaking. He will evaluate this person, and from there decide if they are attempting to fool him. And until he’s given the stamp of approval, they will sit right there in the quaint little shop. And he will stay in disguise.[break][break]

If they pass? Then they will move elsewhere for finer details. But only then.

The matter is of the utmost importance to him. While his family operated in a niche market, he still had recognizability to the right kind of person. He still had a certain look he was trying hard to break away from. Conforming to a new identity would be beneficial as well. He needed work that his resume of 'UHH I PAINTED SOME MURALS?' wouldn't cover. Ditching fake glasses and growing out his hair wasn't enough. He needed documentation if he wanted to find somewhere to live, open a bank account, get through conversations with the police. [break][break]

It's sheer luck he somehow finds this person. He'd been guessing how much money to hand out, but the promise of more had guaranteed him an actual lead. Not just another scam, of which he had fallen victim to many before. The instructions he'd been given were memorized, his communications burned or deleted. A bucket hat covers up messy, half grown hair. The remains of a buzz cut finally allowed to strength beyond the one inch allowed by his stylist. Clothes are less tweed, more casual. [break][break]

He'd ditched the suit, following a poster inside a clothing store as a guide. A crewneck sweater, new but fashionably ripped jeans, sneakers. Basic, forgettable. Not his best choice, but certainly something that made him blend in better. As he moved through, offering meek greeting to the employees he's quick to scan through the tables. Spying an empty one he made his way there before quietly turning towards the green bookmark. He hones in on it like a beacon, so focused he nearly forgot to come up with a greeting or even an excuse. [break][break]

Pale green eyes go wide as he picked up the bookmark. His mouth opened and closed nervously like a fish gasping for air. "S-Sorry- I just-" his voice is soft, unsure. He's definitely something between lost, anxious, or shy. A bumbling insecurity that almost offered perfect cover. Almost. He slides the bookmark back. "Just- ah, distracted at present. I apologize f-for the intrusion, s-sir." he falls back on what he knows. Empty phrases that stall for time as he puts together an excuse.

Fern was just wondering how long he should sit there before giving up and returning to his shop. Perhaps this had been nothing more than a false alarm–or whoever had contacted him had become too spooked to follow through. The thought alone made him sigh softly. He needed the money that a job this big would net him. It would give him some extra cushion where the padding on his savings was beginning to grow thin.[break][break]

But perhaps fate had chosen to smile on him today, after all. Perhaps it had been equally misguided by his disguise–unable to recognize him for the favor he deserved. Ah, well. If it swung in his favor, he could be merciful toward kismet indeed.[break][break]

The man who approached his table practically looked little more than a boy. Obviously with the looks about him of someone trying desperately to both blend into the background and be someone he was not. Fern could help with that. His gaze snapped upward as the other fumbled, and the book in his hands didn’t snap shut in favor of business just yet.[break][break]

“Are you looking for that?” His eyes darted to the bookmark in the young man’s hand, then back. “If so, sit. Don’t be shy. Fern leaned back in his seat, arms resting on the table as his fingers laced together neatly. Under the table, one leg crossed over the other–prim and proper, but casual. The cool expression on his face never leaving his assumed client. “If not...then I would like my bookmark back, please.”[break][break]

The smile on his face was a thin one, but not wholly unkind. “Are you well?”

Micha does as he's told, taking a seat in front of the stranger and trying not to fidget. He doesn't, but and despite his mousey demeanor he sits up straight, rigid. Every hand movement or scooch is deliberate. He's not slow, but he doesn't rush to get into the booth. His movements are practiced and quiet. [break][break]

He held onto the bookmark almost protectively, like he was gorilla griping his last chance at freedom. "Yes." his words are light, but automatic, expression changing as he slipped into a familiar guise. "Are you?" The waiter came by, and Mint turned the same pleasant expression to them ordering nothing more than a hot cocoa with liberally use of whipped cream.

From behind the false glasses he wears, Fern watches the young man with a cool expression, though he’s awfully curious under the practiced layers of neutrality that he presents. The initial nervousness that he presents is pulled together quickly, and his movements are methodical and tense. Just as practiced as Fern, though in a different way. For now, he folds his book shut and holds his place with his thumb as he leans back against the padding of the booth.[break][break]

“Very good. Points in your favor from the jump.” He’s shown up, and saved Fern the annoyance of dealing with the ghoster. His hand extends–not for a handshake, but for the bookmark. His agreement is all well and good, but Fern would still like to be certain that he’ll be good for future payment. He’s not doing this out of the goodness of his heart, or as an act of altruism for a kid who so clearly wants out of his present life. This is his job, after all, and Fern is playing a part just as much, right now.[break][break]

“Well enough,” he murmurs in response, a light, polite smile flitting over his features and warming his expression as a waiter appears. His own teacup lifts and he sips from it as time is given for ordering. He waits for the waiter to depart before he resumes, peering at those large, green eyes from over the rim of his cup. “Now then, you’re asking for quite a lot. Not just a simple false card.” An entirely new identity, more like. “May I ask why?”[break][break]

Perhaps he should prepare the documents, take the payment, and be done with it. But to him, he feels it helps the craft itself if he has be greater understanding of the situation.

Michaelis dipped his head gently in a nod, eyes on the melting whipped cream in his cup. He picked up a spoon, making no move to bend towards the cup. Instead, delicately he scooped up some whip to his mouth and sipped carefully, like tasting something finer than a diner's instant hot chocolate. He slid the bookmark back, careful in his control of himself during what would be the biggest business transaction of his life. [break][break]

Not that he had any bargaining chips on him. After all, he was clearly just some runaway. He couldn't help the anxiety, the doubt but he had paid good money for this lead. And he was going to pay even more for this contract. [break][break]

The practiced, pleasant smile fell slowly, droopy eyes all the same. He looked weary, matching the initial unease he'd walked in with. "I no longer believe being apart of the Fisk conglomerate benefits me." he stated. This would have been the end result anyway. "People already think I'm dead after the hospital scare, I want to keep it that way." he shrugged. [break][break]

"I-I...have enough to live comfortably withdrawn before my alleged bender, and with a disappearance, no one really wonders where that money went. Assumed spent before I 'died'." he added, his voice low. He could only speculate the truth having left and never gone back. But he'd read the tabloids, and watched the TV interviews. He'd done what he could to go undetected. Grown out his hair, shitty box dyes, outfits hand picked by a randomizer in the middle of Forever 21. [break][break]

"I'd like to be someone I like. And I already have an out." Perhaps this is only something people with money can say, but who cared how he spent fortunes that did and didn't belong to him?

Oh. Fern recalled seeing something about that on the news. Not that he’d paid close attention to the report. How interesting, though. “May I ask why you believe that?” It would be a lot of work to go to, after all, to create a whole new identity—paperwork, and all, for a nepo baby who might change his mind and wish to go home once he decided he didn’t like his new life anymore, it it bored him.[break][break]

He didn’t mean to be skeptical. Well, okay, yeah he did. It was a tedious process. And the other had to be sure of it. He did not know Michaelis beyond this sparse interaction, so Fern had to evaluate and bank on what information was provided to the best of his ability.[break][break]

Well paying or not, it was a long, exhaustive task. He’d save himself the trouble if it wasn’t worth it, or going back on it meant it could cause problems for his business.[break][break]

Fern tilted his head in quiet observation, then adjusted his false glasses and took a long sip from his earl grey. “What does someone you like…well, look like to you. If I’m going to build this identity for you, it will also have to be with you. Think long and hard about that. Even the smallest details are important.”[break][break]

There was no wiggle room for error if he was a well-known face in his home region.

Micha tilted his head down, taking another sip of his drink. "If I go back I may die. And I may be the one who kills me." He'd done it once. Even with @adelina and Ciprina delivering him to the hospital just in time, he'd been ready to let go. [break][break]

And then he'd just left. Vanished into a thin air as possible. Paid people off, learned crude ways of dying his hair. Anything to avoid press. The fun part about being a socialite form Sinnoh though was...the farther away you got form there, the less likely people could recognize you in the streets. After all, he hadn't been popular like luciano fisk or Serafina. His work's appeal held less of a hold on the mainstream. He takes another sip, perking up a bit as Fern asks what he wants. [break][break]

"I want to be someone that people like talking to." the response is more rush than he'd meant it. But it's a clear image in his head. He'd been so isolated, so guarded. It's hard for him to talk, converse. All the basic building blocks are there. The manners, the vocabulary, the status. And yet- every word he'd ever said rang hollow to others. Time with him seemed lie ka chore at best, a punishment at worst. His throat had gone dry and hoarse from disuse. "I want to be flamboyant. and eccentric. I want to be outgoing and- and I want to enjoy looking at myself in the mirror." It's not specific at all. "I don't have marketable skills. I'll never paint again. And I don't want anything to do with art either." he added. [break][break]

He's making a clean break. He's aware he's up shit's creek without a paddle. How would he make money? How would he live? He'd have to really, really be careful if he wanted to just live off the interest of his stolen funds. He'd need a job- something simple. He'd need to learn technical skills maybe? Definitely.

He’d been just about to lift his cup again, when the other’s words made his hand pause, mid-air. Slowly, he set his mug down on its saucer again. “I see,” he said quietly, letting a slight pause follow. “Well, we can’t have that, can we?” He glanced up at the boy, a faint smile curling with his softened words. Finally, a degree of empathy crept through his carefully kept veneer.[break][break]

The loss of a life would certainly not be worth returning him back to where he’d come from. Fern couldn’t claim to understand what sort of burden the younger man felt, but he wasn’t going to be the one to hoist it back onto his shoulders. His brows rose as some life seemed to filter back into Micha. “What makes you think that you aren’t already?” His head tilted as he asked, more out of curiosity than the interviewing he’d been doing this whole time.[break][break]

Still, Fern smiled. It remained a bit careful for the time being. It almost felt like he was suddenly handling a soft, baby bird with a broken wing. “I’m sure we can manage that. Though– all of that will be up to you once the paperwork is in place, of course. I can only help so much.” Though it would be said that Fern knew a thing or two about presenting one’s self as grandiose and larger than life. Just for the sake of self-preservation. And, okay, yes. Because that was also just in his nature.[break][break]

Regardless, he pushed his cup away and rose. Thumbing through his billfold for payment, he placed it neatly on the table and then looked down at the other. “Would you like to accompany me to my shop, then? It’s just down the street.”

Michaelis nodded quickly, knees knocking together as he looked down at his cup. It's embarrassing but if he wanted this to work he would have to open up a bit more. And besides, who he wanted to be was the complete opposite of himself. He needed to get over his own discomfort if he wanted to become them. [break][break]

He perked up at the question, pink tinging his cheeks. Had that been a compliment? A genuine one?? He looked back down at the table. Maybe there was hope for him after all. Pale green eyes are back up once more, locked with quiet determination. He keeps nodding, trying not to be too obviously pleased. But this is what he needed. A new direction- a new life. [break][break]

"I- uh- yes. Of course." the energy collapses, neatly folded back into himself as he retakes his proper shell. The lean towards Fern stopped, his spine straightening, and shoulders squaring off. A polite smile graced his features once more. "Lead the way, sir."

The reaction of surprise seemed to be a genuine one. Fern couldn’t help but smile slightly at the tinge of color Michaelis’ cheeks. “Then it is settled.” All that remained was to intricately develop this new persona and get to work. But he would prefer to do that in the confines of his shop, rather than out in the open.[break][break]

Leaving payment on the table for both of their drinks, Fern pushed himself up and stood. Book tucked under his arm, he waited for the other and then nodded shortly. “Come along then. It’s not too far.” Without much else of a word, he led them out and navigated the Sootopolis streets with comfortable ease.[break][break]

At some point, he shed his false glasses and tucked them away. By the time they reached his shop, he was itching to remove the last bit of his disguise. Unlocking the back door, he stepped through and waited for Michaelis to follow. Michaelis stood with care, nodding to the server before following after their new companion. Sootopolis is strange to him, but he kept up with their caretaker easily enough. Though, he does adjust his jacket and look down at his shoes a couple of timestp avoid the eyes of other walkers. [break][break]

The safety of the shop is a relief. He glanced around curious at the things that were meant to help curate his new life. Amidst it all, he stopped to stare at his sponsor as they cha ged appearance. "O-oh! I should've expected this." He blurted out, pale green eyes darting over Fern. Should he learn to wear wigs? Was that what this would entail. A hand went to his hair subconsciously before dropping abruptly as Fern spoke. "R-right!" He said before reaching into his pockets and down into hsi wallet. The first thing of note would be the distinct shift in demeanor. Just as the disguise was shrugged off, so too was their false demeanor. In the haven of their shop—still a fledgling business here in Hoenn, they unwind and allow their true personality to bubble free.[break][break]

The surprise drew a laugh from Fern, head tipping back as inky dark hair brushed their shoulders. “Should you have?” they asked, laughter still curling on the ends of their words. “I may just be paranoid, you know.” They winked at him, grin cheeky as they shifted back toward their work bench to search for a notepad.[break][break]

As in, Michaelis was not the only one hiding away from eyes he’d prefer not see him.[break][break]

“Come, come,” Fern glanced toward a window before moving to usher the younger man to the back where their office was tucked away. “Sit, if you like. Can I see your notes?” Their question is patient, but they pause after a moment. Unconventional, but they have never considered themself to be wholly by the book— “Actually, how about you read them to me. Like you believe to really be about yourself, hm?” They raised an impassioned fist, “With confidence, dove!”
