a few strings were tug to put him in this position. inventory problems caused certain companies to grow curious of the problem, and jamison's wasn't different.

he supposed him being personally curious of the problem differs him from the rest, but that's just kyle's take on it. regardless of his reason, he was here, and kyle takes the opportunity to place himself there.

it helps that it's in slateport, where he has the most influence out of the rest of hoenn.

"there it is, jamison."

before them are rocket smugglers discretely taking out cargo from a warehouse. fake uniforms work well with their operations, but the supervisor's permission allowed for a stakeout to reach this point.

"looks like we found out why you aren't getting your shipments for your courier service."

his lycanroc comes up from behind them. kyle gives it a scratch on the side of its head before he turns to the courier.

"stealth rocks are set. they aren't getting anywhere now. any approaches you want to take?"

The smugglers weren't going anywhere-and neither was he now!

"Out! Obviously!" Locke half whispered, half whined. "Do you always trap civilians with dangerous criminals?!"

How had a few missing packages lead to this? Why couldn't they have just fallen off a truck somewhere or something normal like that?

Locke shuffled forward along the ground to peer out at the Rockets present. Nobody they recognized thankfully, but that didn't rule out the possibility of disguises. It was hard for them to tell many were inside the warehouse as well, or if there were any regular workers mixed in among them.

They'd just have to trust the Mr. Lopez's judgement.

"Um, let's see…Pokémon not affected by Stealth Rock…" they creeped back to their hiding spot, rifling through their collection of Pokéballs until the finally pulled out a capsule decorated in sparkling star stickers and cartoonish Z's. "It's not very strong on its own, but my Abra could probably help."

The same could be said for most of the courier's Pokémon really, and the ones that could stand on their own didn't listen to them well enough for something like this. At least Psychic Pokémon like Dini-Dini had a decent range of support moves.

Probably better if the Champion led the charge anyway.

the response wasn't what he expected. still, he stifled a chuckle.

"didn't you stay instead of running away from much more dangerous scenarios?"

it has happened multiple times already. once was a coincidence. more than twice was a pattern. a faint smile remains on his expression, waiting to see if jamison slowly recognizes his clue.

he raises a brow at the mention of abra. psychic-types were usually good utility bots so he's not sure why it's being downplayed.

"it's fine. strength doesn't matter. this scenario doesn't require that." he beckons his lycanroc near him, readying him for the next step. "i'll take front. i'll ask you to recognize which goods are from which clients later."

the people who asked him to do this didn't exactly give him a list of things that were stolen from them. he hopes the courier has them, or at least recognize names and addresses.

without much follow up, kyle walks up to those in charge. they flinch for a moment, but continued to play it cool in case it breaks their disguise.

"oh, hey. i got questions for you guys. nothing big. can i speak with your supervisor?"

Embarrassment warmed the courier's cheeks at the jab. It was hardly their fault crazy stuff seemed to happen wherever they went! It was this deathtrap of a region that was to blame, not them!

Locke released their Abra as Lopez left to confront the thieves, pulling Dini-Dini into their lap and leaning back against the wall with a huff. If he only needed them to identify the packages afterwards, then why drag them along for this part at all?

…Unless he was hoping to see one of those dangerous scenarios up close.

He hadn't imagined the champion was paying him much attention in any of their previous shared encounters with Hoenn's many dangers-save for maybe his confrontation with the Silph brothers in the cyber dimension. To know the League was already keeping tabs on him was…disconcerting. It would make sense, with the amount of incidents under his name now-he had to have a file a novel long at this point.

But what else did they know? Locke wracked his brain for any instance he might've been seen with an undisguised Latias in public, finding only the chaos of the Darkest Day as a potential link between them.

He hugged Dini-Dini closer. The eyes beneath the earth that had haunted him last year had faded somewhat with time, but his skin crawled once again with the sensation of being watched. The DRK Triad, Team Rocket, the League…

Wait.

They were being watched.

Locke stumbled to their feet-too late, as the Bisharp's blade-hand pressed sharp and cold against their neck. Behind it, a man dressed in bright safety gear raised a finger to his lips, before leaving the trembling courier to step out behind Lopez.

"What seems to be the problem officer?"

the best part of being a cop first and trainer second was the compulsory training he has to get his dog pokemon before they accompany him on his job.

anything new is immediately spotted. with stealth rocks acting as the mark for the perimeter, anything new that enters within it can be easily differentiated.

"the problem's-"

before kyle can fully turn to face the man, the lycanroc bolts forward beyond the man all the way to where locke was. accelrock brings its speed akin to a bullet, where the bisharp is the target.

"wha-?"

kyle makes use of the confusion to quickly apprehend the man as soon as it turns to see where the lycanroc went. handcuffs quickly incapacitate him before kyle lightly pushes him on the back, breaking his balance so he falls on the ground.

soon, the rest of the people act up. with no pokemon of his own around, he whistles for the abra's attention for help. it has a few moments to act before the rest of the workers send out their pokemon against it.

The sound of rushing pawsteps brought both captor and hostage's attention to the oncoming wolf. The Bisharp's blade slid against Locke's throat, but not quickly enough as the courier kicked the distracted Pokémon away from themselves and into the Lycanroc's warpath.

He scurried out of hiding like a Joltik in the light, pressing a hand against the thin line along his neck and gulping air just to make sure he still could. A wave of concern followed after him, and he instinctively glanced upwards before Lopez's whistle swiftly brought his gaze back down.

The other "dockworkers" were on the move, and he only needed to see one brush against the capsules on their belt to bark an order for two.

"Trick!"

In a flash a few of the grunts belts-Pokéballs and all-appeared around Dini-Dini before clattering to the ground. A few seconds later they were followed by several more, raining down from somewhere much further above as the confused and disarmed smugglers tried to regain their bearings.

he smiles at the abra. this went much better than expected since it did make his job much easier.

from the back, the lycanroc makes quick work of the bisharp it managed to pin down from surprise with drill run. at the front, kyle takes the opening made by locke's abra for his smeargle to pop out of its pokeball. it raises its tail and releases black orbs from its tip to each of the aggressors.

dark void got them to all drop like vegetable grass-types.

"that went fast," he concludes as he whistles for his lycanroc. "can you find which one of these belongs to that 'mon?" he asks his pokemon.

he walks over to where the abra was and its pile of belts, crouching down to separate them in a much more neat pattern for his pokemon to more easily differentiate each.

"oh, yeah. have you realized why you got singled out?" he asks in the middle of his work.

It was fast-and it didn't escape Locke's notice that the OHKO Lopez just dropped could've made it all the faster, if he'd so chosen. The Stealth Rocks as well, notably, had yet to trigger.

Dini-Dini, realizing the job was done, sunk back into his trainer's arms for a nap-either unaware or uncaring of the tension that had yet to leave the courier.

"Because the universe keeps deciding I don't have enough problems?" they sighed irritably.

They knew the answer, and Lopez knew it too, but what they didn't know was what the other man's intentions were-and they didn't appreciate being baited into a trap, especially one that involved a sharp object near their face.

Above, however, Latias' own agitation poured over him like rain. Concern interspersed with flashes of familiarity; she knew the champion somehow, but his own caution was keeping her just out of sight. He tried to send back reassurances, but they were both still navigating the beginnings of a deeper connection, and their anxieties only looped into each other like mental feedback.

Locke took a breath.

"I think," he began, finally managing to pull some of his customer service persona back together. "That I was a C-average student at best, and not very good at tests, Mr. Lopez."

"ah, same." he did just enough to pass, and nothing more than that. the nostalgia hits, and, like a fire-type, the feeling burns up just as quick.

his lycanroc finally finds the one belonging to the bisharp. kyle picks it up, recalls the fainted pokemon and attaches it back to the belt. he kicks them all in a nice pile as he continues the conversation.

"anyways, just give me a quick answer. yes or no. better me than any of the pushy, wordy people, right?"

the smeargle gets recalled as well before he moves to cuffing the criminals. at this point, it's just the two of them.

with its work done, the lycanroc proceeds to swing its head from side to side, watching over the small perimeter by itself. no third party to influence locke's decisions.

"ah, i can take no for an answer if you're worried about that! a-and questions too. that's fine too." he scratches the back of his head. "ugh, i'm bad at this so you have to bear with me."

similarities between them led to kyle projecting, which he corrects internally.

The question changed from open answer to a simple multiple choice. Locke considered it just as carefully as its predecessor, but the thought of another conversation with FERNANDO SILPH was really all the consideration he needed.

The champion's demeanor had also shifted-and it took a few seconds of searching the other man for deception to realize neither the devil-may-care attitude from before or the awkward, apologetic stance he took now was a front.

This guy just didn't have any filter to speak of.

With a better understanding of what kind of person they were dealing with, Locke finally relaxed.

"Alright."

The concession was as much to Lopez as it was to their hidden companion, who dropped down beside them and revealed herself as soon as the last of the tension left the courier's body. She circled around her charge a few times, seemingly unconcerned with the champion's presence. Locke placed a hand on the legendary's head, both as reassurance and to keep her still, while casting fretful glances at the snoozing smugglers around them.

kyle's not the type to go talk about the business side of the league, after all, despite having done so before.

"i'd invite you to my house or an office by ever grande to talk about it too, but i'm not sure if you'd be comfortable with that either."

he's someone who has been on various life changing events of the region after all. despite that, he's never quite made a name for himself like the previous person seen with latias. kyle might just be assuming things with this one though.

"i'unno. this place just seems convenient. do you prefer elsewhere?"

a lot of hypotheticals came into play when kyle decided to bring locke in this exact scenario. he was just thinking outside the box, but it might be too far from comfort for anyone else not as unhinged as him.

A complete nobody like them randomly casually chatting with the champion in public probably would turn a few heads-and the idea of being stuck behind a locked door with no escape had been a reoccurring fear ever since Latias had started hanging around more often.

"Well, I guess I don't really have an alternative," they relented.

"Speaking of inconspicuous though," he continued with a pointed look at Latias. The legendary huffed into his palm-and he was accusing her of being a worrywart. The air shimmered around her before warping into the illusion of a Togekiss.

She followed the courier as he made his way over to the boxes the Rockets had been moving, intent on at least carrying out his part of job. And maybe to have something to keep himself busy.

he remembers a time where the legendary linked with him hasn't even met him nor did he exhibit actual supernatural powers, yet he was labeled as one. fun times.

kyle remains standing, following locke with his eyes as he walks around.

"but tl;dr, you're spotted with a pokemon that was linked to someone else who earned the invite. i figured that since he got one, why not give you one as well?"

he's not sure if they knew each other or not, given that he doesn't really care much to learn the behavior of legendary pokemon when it doesn't concern him. on the off chance they do, however, he considers this a service for a friend by giving them a chance to be free from all the business jargon.

"oh, yeah, by the way, what's your current connotation with the organization?"

aqua does have weird, sci-fi superhero sounding themes to it, and it's not difficult to imagine others think it's purely capitalistic in nature. kyle can't entirely fault them though.

His lack of Avatar status not being a deterrent for the League's recruitment wasn't as much of relief as Lopez made it out to be. He did appreciate his frankness though.

They supposed they might've heard more about it if the other man had accepted, and the fact that they'd heard nothing at all until now was as good a sign as any that the refusal had been on lukewarm terms at best.

The courier considered their answer carefully, still unsure of what might be seen as overstepping when it came to their political opinions.

"I prefer them over Rocket." He'd give them that. "And ultimately I think the League is trying to do what's right for the region with AQUA.

"But…" he continued tentatively, "I also think the League is too often more concerned with what's right than what's good.

"As far an invitation goes…I'd have to talk it over with that 'someone else' first."

He and Latias wouldn't be joining anything without hearing Angelo and Latios' thoughts beforehand.

it's the alignment chart all over again. lawful versus good. they're both positive at first glance, but still ultimately two separate spectrums. overlaps happen, but same goes with law and evil, as well as chaos and good.

just like the interest of sootopolis' army of rocket supporters versus those that want to bomb the city. the lives of hoenn's people over the lives of other universe.

...the interest of normal people who fear avatars will use their powers for selfish needs over avatars' natural inclination for chaos.

"ultimately, you're right. what someone sees as good might not be the case for someone else."

he's seen it happen a lot of times. consequences of their actions aren't always apparent, but questionable decisions made from the goodness of people's hearts was enough conflict for kyle that all he can do with those is scratch his head.
