It was finally happening.[break][break]
Nomi had secured an audience with a Rocket head scientist, at the recommendation of Cillian Quinn, the later of whom Ceri Glynn had felt confident would be able to inch Nomi ever closer to the answers she was seeking regarding her parents' disappearance over 20 years ago. And Gavin had, indeed, made good on that promise. Nomi felt a surge of gratitude for both of them - her friend and their collective underboss - as she entered the private top-secret laboratories only intended for certain authorized individuals. In the palm of her hand she tightly grasped a small temporary ID tag that would grant her access to this area of Rocket's headquarters for one day.[break][break]
She approached the main office, glimpsing the stoic, bearded figure of Raphael Pryde inside. She knocked politely on the door, though it was cracked open, moving through the threshhold a heartbeat later. She bowed her head to him in respect, and said, "Good afternoon, Sir. My name is Naomi Sato. I am here to assist with the Slowbro de-evolution study. I brought my own along, should he be needed."[break][break]
She kept her voice neutral and calm, with a measure of deference. Let him figure out that she was a loyal, competent researcher first, then she'd start asking her questions.

It's on Cillian Quinn's word that he allows someone new to his inner circle to help. Thankfully he was overlooking something simple, grunts devolving some Slowbro. A simple task, one that he would use to test those who were looking to get in. Should they use their heads rather than brute force he would see them as having a mind that actually cranks rather than go 'buurrr' or however the kids were calling it these days.[break][break]

"Unless you plan on selling it as well then no," he gives as he takes a drag from his cigarette. Seeming to remind himself that this was a recommendation of a former student so he'll put on some charm. He smiles as he drops the bud and steps on it before introducing himself, "And I'm Doctor Raphael Pryde, you can address me as Doctor or Pryde, impress me and maybe the third option will become available," Pryde offers as he gestures toward the slowbro were a few other grunts were trying at it as his signal for her to get to work. [break][break]

"Now what is your interest in working for me?" he decides to question, see what motivations he couldn't drag out as he studies their chosen methods.

Nomi's first impression of Raphael Pryde was that he was not the sort of man to waste his time on anything that did not immediately prove useful to him. That was a relief, of course, because it was a very straightforward way for someone to be.[break][break]
She promptly followed him into the adjoining laboratory he had been pointing to earlier, where three other grunts - student researchers such as herself, it seemed - were already in the midst of their task to de-evolve a series of rather obstinate-looking Slowbro. The others eyed her suspiciously as she entered, but she paid them no mind. All three had not seemed to have any success thus far, therefore she had plenty of time to prove to Doctor Pryde that she was the best candidate in the room.[break][break]
As she was directed to the fourth and final Slowbro in line, she carefully considered Doctor Pryde's question about her interest in working for him. A trap question, she thought, knowing that the majority of up-and-coming researchers who were asked such an inquiry likely leaned heavily on flattery to win over a man who - from Nomi's perspective, at least - clearly did not have patience for it. He already knows he's important, he doesn't need anybody else to tell him that.[break][break]
What a no-nonsense man like Pryde appreciated, she figured, was honesty delivered directly and without prelude. Flowery language and half-truths would get her nowhere.[break][break]
"Your time in Kanto, Doctor," She explained matter-of-factly. "I heard you were a head scientist there before you came to Hoenn. I have a special interest in some of the research that was being done there - fascinating experiments regarding illusory Pokémon, to be exact. Whatever you are focusing on currently, in Hoenn, is bound to be just as interesting, if not more so." She did not mention her parents, not yet. Let him first see that she was someone who pays attention to the actual scientific work being done by Rocket. And perhaps if he had known her parents, he would recognize her father's work with mimicry and illusions, connecting that to her last name.[break][break]
She took a long, thoughtful look at the Slowbro. He glared back at her, a sleepy grump. She reached out and scratched him behind a rounded ear. Her own Slowbro tended to like that, and this one seemed to be no different. He grumbled happily, despite himself. We'll warm him up before we de-evolve him. It will be easier that way.

While her answer actually manages to interest him as it does stand out from the few before her, Pryde shows nothing. His time playing his poker games, with the small minor edition of being just being dead inside, allowing him to keep his thoughts to himself. The only thing he does give off is a simple hum of thought as if considering her answer. Which was more than what a few of the others got which seem to have a few of the others annoyed with her. [break][break]

Though as she works his mind does ponder back the work she mentioned. of the 'illusory pokemon' a concept that hasn't been worked on in quite a long time. He does look to his chart to look up her age and name again, "I see you've heard of older projects, then you were with us in Kanto then?" he decides to question instead rather than his usual follow up. Still keeping an eye on her way of going about the Slowbro.

Nomi smiled somewhat cryptically. "No, I've never been to Kanto," She answered simply, knowing that this was her chance. "But my parents have." She paused, letting her words sink in. "They went to Kanto when I was a child, for work. Perhaps you've heard of them? Dr. Yuri Sato and Dr. Karin Sato. They were prolific within the Johto scientific community, specialists in illusory, shadow, and mimicry Pokémon." [break][break]
She turned away from Pryde, then, casual in her approach. She did not want to get on his nerves with loquacious explanations. She needed to balance conversation with actually showing him she could get the job done that he'd currently assigned her to.[break][break]
The Slowbro had begun to warm up to Nomi as she scratched him behind the ears - and, he was growing sleepier, too. She glanced around the room at the various work stations that had been set up for the de-evolution study, searching for the right tool. Her eyes soon pinpointed exactly what she needed on a nearby table, and she halted her ear scratches to quickly snatch it: a long, thin laboratory-grade scalpel. The other students around her seemed to be wasting a tremendous amount of time attempted to coax the Shellders off of their Slowbros - a futile effort, as Shellder were notoriously stubborn creatures. They all likely knew what they really ought to be doing, but they didn't want to do it out of a sentimental reluctance to cause the Slowbro pain.[break][break]
But they were all forgetting a critical yet completely fundamental trait of the Slowbro species: they could not actually feel pain. Shellder's poison completely blocked their pain receptors. Therefore, the easiest and most practical way to de-evolve a Slowbro was to cut off its tail. The ear scratches were meant to guarantee a peaceful reaction - pain might not be an issue, but the sudden irritation of being hacked into might, if the Slowbro was not sufficiently placated into a sleepy state.[break][break]
Nomi began to cut.

A brow raises when she mentions not having worked in Kanto before, and yet she heard of both his work and some projects. Though at the mention of 'parents' everything started falling into place like a puzzle where there was one hidden piece. The name becoming far more familiar and some of the mystery around the young lady has faded. Though now it brought up other questions about her. Mostly about why be here as, if memory serves well, they had met with a terrible fate. [break][break]

"Amusing," he comments as he strokes his beard, "So you hope to follow in their footsteps then?" he ponders allowing her to take that either positively or negatively. Though a yelp from one of the other recruits cuts through the air as while it seems one of them managed to get the shelder off but now it was biting into their arm, Pryde does nothing but judge as several of the others seem unsure if they should help or keep going. [break][break]

Another opportune moment for a test was all this was.

"I suppose you could say that," Nomi replied with some effort, cutting through the final strands of sinew belonging to her assigned Slowbro's tail. With a sudden squelching plop, the tail fell to the ground, completely dismembered. The Slowbro looked around, confused, but before it could do anything in protest, it began to glow with a soft white hue. A heartbeat later, it had turned back into a Slowpoke, tail intact. Nomi nodded, satisfied.[break][break]
It had been a rather easy test, in the end.[break][break]
She stood, wiping the blood off of the scalpel. She turned to face Raphael Pryde directly, and considered his question more seriously now that her task was complete. "My parents were very curious about the nature of Pokémon - specifically Pokémon with the capabilities to mimic other living beings, manipulate their bodies based on their environments, and conjure illusions to hide their true natures. I never fully understood what they hoped to gain by studying these specific aspects of various Pokémon...until I realized recently: perhaps they wanted to figure out how we could leverage such power. The perfect disguise, the power to change one's shape at will...well. That would certainly benefit an organization like Team Rocket."[break][break]
She eyed Pryde, feeling suddenly bold.[break][break]
"I want to know what happened to them, Dr. Pryde. But yes. I also want to continue their work. For Rocket."[break][break]
It was selfish, of course. Rocket had the resources, and she had the ideas. It was a combination she could not pass up, even if Rocket was a radicalized criminal organization that any normal young woman would stay far, far away from.[break][break]
But Nomi hadn't ever been normal, not really. Her grandmother used to say she was special, but Nomi didn't think that was quite right, either. Nomi was just Nomi.[break][break]
And Nomi was curious.

Failures, is all he could think about the others while some like @naomi seemed to pass all his minimal expectations so far. Some manage to complete the task but not in a way that showed off they could be of use. He supposes they could be testers if nothing else. Red eyes are brought back to the young lady as it seems she wants to clarify things. Going on some information he already knew. [break][break]

"They had an interesting concept but couldn't deliver, and in Rocket when you can't deliver bad things can happen Ms Sato, though mostly in the old regime," he informs her as if giving a warning. Whether it be trying to give a hint to the possibility of what happened to them or if he was saying it as a warning to her attempting to continue their research was a toss up at best. [break][break]

"But if you think you can preform far be it from me to stop you," he goes on as he makes notes on his note pad before he gets a new paper and begins to write names before he puts it on the table in front of him. "If you see your name on this list I'll see you bright and early tomorrow in my labs, if you don't you are in charge of cleaning up in here before you leave as it might earn you just enough brownie points that I'll allow you a second chance for working here."[break][break]

Pryde announces as if this were some sort of school try out, @naomi would find that she has made the cut along with a few others. Pryde staying there to allow any more questions should they choose to ask.

"Of course, thank you for the opportunity," Nomi nodded her head respectfully to Dr. Pryde as he explained how the results of the assessment would be communicated to her. She knew that nothing was set in stone, but she had a feeling she had impressed him. He had, if only subtly, seemed to approve of her methods...at the very least, he hadn't outright ridiculed or scolded her like he had with most of the other candidates.[break][break]
As she cleaned up her work space, she contemplated what he'd said about her parents. They had an interesting concept but couldn't deliver, and in Rocket when you can't deliver bad things can happen Ms Sato, though mostly in the old regime.[break][break]
Couldn't deliver? What couldn't they deliver, exactly? A sudden frustration - and, she realized, protectiveness - surged through her at the thought that her parents' work had not been deemed "good enough." But was that really the entire story? Sometimes, pissing off the wrong person had nothing to do with quality of work. She opened her mouth to ask another question, then shut it. It was clear she'd pushed her luck with Raphael Pryde, and didn't want to irritate the head scientist by being overly nosy...after all, why try and work for the man if not to secure more time with him in the future, to continue picking his brain? She had to be patient. In any case, he was already starting to walk away.[break][break]
This isn't over, she thought with determination. I'll get to the bottom of this eventually.
