Henry leaned in slowly, closing in on Camille's lips. He was beyond the point of return and there was no way that he would be able to stop himself. He was sitting somewhere in a space between aching anticipation and realization. It was like standing on the edge of a cliff, looking down at the sea. He wondered if she felt the same in that split second, but all he could see was her yearning face. Was that a signal? On the seaside cliff- like they're both looking down to the ocean and back at each other, their hearts beating as they both leap and then-

And then, his lips gently touch hers. A nervous splash of tension begins to dissolve into a calm release. The electric charge once felt is quickly replaced with warm waves of bliss and pleasure. A sigh is shared between the two. Henry pulls away for just a moment, exhales while acknowledging the leap they'd taken, and goes back to her for a second kiss. Henry sat there, wrapped in Camille's presence, slowly finding comfort in the rhythm they've built together.

The world around receded. They were adrift at sea, feeling the dance of each other's heartbeats strong enough to feel like riding a wave. It was serene. He had hoped she felt the same way.

Their lips parted and he touched foreheads with Camille. Henry's mouth opened as if to say something, but after opening he hesitated, and as soon as they were open, they closed. He sat across from Camille and looked at her longingly while his thumbs rubbing the outsides of her hands.

for everyone who knew them, who had grown up with them, it had always been obvious that they were best friends. where one was, you could expect the other one to be. from the very first day they'd met as neighbors in fallarbor, attending the same local schools, and even together as classmates at fallharbor high. they were friends, but camille had never once called him that.

[break][break] because to her, henry wasn't just a friend. he was henry — her henry, to be exact.

[break][break] so she wasn't exactly sure what she was expecting as his answer, but whatever it was had her heart thrumming the same way a hummingbird's wings hovered over a bed of freshly-grown flowers.

[break][break] her eyes widened, briefly, as he closed the distance between them and all of a sudden - out of nowhere - out of the depths of her sweet, youthful heart —

[break][break] he kissed her.

[break][break] surprise melted away to sweetness as he kissed her, but it was only a matter of time before she was reciprocating the feelings. when he tried to pull away, her fingers tangled in his shirt collar, the threadbare texture of his argyle sweater pulled closer as she licked her way into his mouth. not her first kiss by any means, but it was the only one that mattered.

[break][break] her cheeks burned red when they finally parted, but the smile on her face was beaming.

[break][break] her voice was low, her fingers not unwilling to tangle from his.

Henry nodded, a mix of emotions tumbling within him. Yeah he said, his voice barely above a whisper, laden with the weight of the feelings he harbored. Was that.. I mean.. His gaze dropped to their intertwined fingers before meeting her eyes again. You kinda did too. Didn't she?

The weight of his decision pressed onto him, yet there was also an undeniable surge of relief mingling with his nerves. Taking a deep, steadying breath, Henry pushed past his anxiety, his resolve firming. I had to know.. I guess. As he looked up again, meeting her eyes, the fading light of the sunset bathed her face. He could still taste her on his lips.

Taking a deep breath, Henry steadied himself, finding resolve in the quiet support of their joined hands. As the mood deepened around them, his eyes held a silent promise, filled with the anticipation of what might unfold next.

"i did," she affirms, cheeks red. she had, hadn't she? they'd kissed. they'd actually kissed.

[break][break] gleaming teal eyes look up at henry as emotions tumble through her too, too complicated to untangle. not that she wants to. this is something - she's thought about this for so many years - or more accurately, tried not to think about it for so many years.

[break][break] but now it's here.

[break][break] "and what did you want to know?" she whispered back.

[break][break] she's unable to help herself from inching forward, to angle her head up at him, to wonder what it was behind those calm, caramel eyes of his.

[break][break] a tongue dashed against her bottom lip, as if remembering what it tasted like to kiss him.

Henry noticed her invitation and joined her lips with his, this time with a little less anxiety than before. He adapted quicker than expected and found himself wanting more, craving her touch more. Heat traveled through his mouth and face. His eyes were mostly closed but could still tell he was a little dizzy from the excitement.

His left hand traveled up from her hand onto the right side of her head, cradling her neck, jaw, and lower cheek. Her face is so small. It was a strange feeling, touching her and somehow still not feeling close enough, as if even their skin was an obstacle. He used his hand to gently guide her closer to him and to coax her into just the right angle.

His fingers danced on her neck, right below and behind her ear. They moved with irregular rhythms- some drew circles and some back and forth, barely grazing where her hair began to grow and back again to her earlobe.

Remembering they had company, he pauses, glances back to the sleeping pokemon, then looks back at Camille. Maybe we could go upstairs?

he answered her questions with a kiss.

[break][break] and indeed what a kiss it was.

[break][break] henry booker was not the first kiss that camille harte ever had, but it was the only kiss that had mattered. the only one that she had spent her childhood thinking about, dancing around the topic of her best friend, pretending the way that whenever their hands brushed, or she bumped her knees with his, or she watched flour dust his cheeks when he worked in the bakery, that it didn't make her heart spin and her stomach flutter with anticipation.

[break][break] when he pulled back, her eyes were slightly lidded, glazed over with the heat of the moment that had been shared between them both.

[break][break] "yes," she said, grinning as she pulled him close and pressed another kiss to his lips. "i thought you'd never ask."
