for everyone who knew them, who had grown up with them, it had always been obvious that they were best friends. where one was, you could expect the other one to be. from the very first day they'd met as neighbors in fallarbor, attending the same local schools, and even together as classmates at fallharbor high. they were friends, but camille had never once called him that.

[break][break] because to her, henry wasn't just a friend. he was henry — her henry, to be exact.

[break][break] so she wasn't exactly sure what she was expecting as his answer, but whatever it was had her heart thrumming the same way a hummingbird's wings hovered over a bed of freshly-grown flowers.

[break][break] her eyes widened, briefly, as he closed the distance between them and all of a sudden - out of nowhere - out of the depths of her sweet, youthful heart —

[break][break] he kissed her.

[break][break] surprise melted away to sweetness as he kissed her, but it was only a matter of time before she was reciprocating the feelings. when he tried to pull away, her fingers tangled in his shirt collar, the threadbare texture of his argyle sweater pulled closer as she licked her way into his mouth. not her first kiss by any means, but it was the only one that mattered.

"is that true?" she said, nearly wistful in her recollection. "i dunno... it hadn't felt that way. i just did it because - " because i could. "because i was lost."

[break][break] she hadn't had any direction back then. but being in fallarbor had seemed so suffocating — after growing up there all her life, she had wanted out. she wanted to see what else was out there, and she - foolishly - thought that whatever out there was better than here.

[break][break] but that hadn't been true. that hadn't been true because —

[break][break] camille blinked, bursting out: "you are good at things, henry! you're good at a lot. like baking and -"

[break][break] her cheeks flushed when she realized her outburst and she forced herself to glance away, staring off at their dozing pokemon, so she could catch her breath to look at them again. by then, she realized, his hands had folded over hers.

[break][break] it wasn't the first time that they held hands.

[break][break] yet, this was...

[break][break] her heart thudded painfully inside her chest. her eyes were wide.

[break][break] "like what?" she found herself asking, leaning closer. wanting, no needing to know. she licked some sugar off her bottom lip. "what do you want, henry?"

[break][break] her cheeks dusted pink at the teasing remark. henry was such a quiet, amenable guy — most of the time — so that when he said anything that was more than that, it sent a brief flutter through her.

[break][break] camille chewed heartily on the treat to ignore the feeling, only blinking once she caught his face so close to hers. she could smell his cologne mingled with his shampoo, smelling briefly of vanilla and cedarwood.

[break][break] "i..."

[break][break] she blinked, her cheeks blushing brighter.

[break][break] "you know me, henry," she murmured, her voice soft as falling lily petals. "you've always known what i want."

[break][break] traveling had been fun, studying abroad had been fun, but camille never wanted anything more than to feel comforted and at peace. her unsteady childhood had preestablished that, and it was why she was so easily endeared to flowers and fragrances.

[break][break] all camille ever wanted was to feel at home. and she felt that, with henry.

he hands her a napkin and she reaches for it like second-nature, like it's something that she knew he'd get for her subconciously without even thinking about it. camille dabs at her lip and then grabs the coffee mug to sip, glancing curiously at henry as he explains the reason for this experiment.

[break][break] "using me?" she arches a brow, and then her expression turns devious. "well - if you say so, hen. you'll just have to make it up to me later."

[break][break] her eyes twinkle, full of mischief, before she breaks a piece of the second pastry to eat.

[break][break] this one isn't quite as crumbly as the other one... it is beautifully curved yet dense where it matters, and she savors it as she swallows the buttery treat. "this one's good too. i especially like the pattern on this one," she says, pointing to the slight curve with the end of her fork.

[break][break] looking directly at him, she smiles bright and brilliant.

[break][break] "you're amazing, henry."

Eventually, they find shelter and Camille finds herself watching the old man sag comically onto the bench as if he'd completed a mile run. In his defense, though, her heart still hammered from the weird event that had just happened too.

[break][break] "W-wait what? You're dying?" Her eyes bugged out in shock and she immediately walked towards him, before stopping. Oh. He was just drunk. "You're - you're - "

[break][break] An idiot.

[break][break] "I don't think you hallucinated them," she settled on instead, heaving out a sigh. "We should probably - "

[break][break] Before she could get the next words out, however, it appeared that the man had already begun to disappear. Inside a bus. She blinked rapidly, glancing from where he had once sat and to where he stood now, one foot already inside the bus.

[break][break] "Um."

[break][break] Briar popped up beside her too, the stems of a fallen flower in his mouth. He blinked also in confusion.

[break][break] "Um, bye! I guess! Get home safe!"

"kouga-wha?" she said around a mouthful of the pastry. it is sweet and melts deliciously in her mouth, leaving stray crumbs along her lip that she doesn't notice.

[break][break] "where'd you try it?" her eyes lit up with curiosity, head tilted towards him. she wondered if it had been anywhere nearby. "maybe we can - "

[break][break] suddenly, henry reached for her mug and took a big gulp of her drink.

[break][break] the one that she'd just drank from.

[break][break] her cheeks lit up in a fierce blush.

[break][break] 'that was like, an indirect kiss, right?'

[break][break] it wasn't abnormal for them, or well it hadn't been. but ever since she'd away from college and come back, things had been perceptibly different. things she'd never thought about before had suddenly embarrassed her, and she couldn't figure out why.

[break][break] her eyes darted away from his gaze, adn back to the treat at hand. she cut herself another piece, focusing on the savory way that it tasted in her mouth.

[break][break] "it's really crumbly. but buttery too! and it's so cute," she finally decided at the end, glancing down at it. the toasted edges were undeniably adorable, reminding her of something her grandma called "elephant cookies".

[break][break] she blinks as another plate slides towards her.

[break][break] "ooh, what's this?"

Brilliant light flashed out suddenly before the man, and it took her a moment to realize that it was a pokemon, not him.

[break][break] "Y-yeah," she said shakily, still glancing between him and the sudden creature that had appeared out of the portal. Cami wasn't a pokemon trainer, so she wasn't good at these types of things. She fumbled for her pokeball anyway, releasing her Skiddo.

[break][break] "Briar! Razor Leaf!"

[break][break] With a shout, the goat-like pokemon lunched and tiny blade-like leaves shot out into the night sky, cutting down the Palafin and making way for their path to escape.

[break][break] Just in time too. She nodded quickly as the drunk man grabbed her wrist, attempting to sprint through the opening.

Though she would never admit it to his face - she was too stubborn - the coffee was good. It had notes of something warm and vaguely cocoa-tasting, reminding her of a barely-lit fire.

[break][break] She watches him work, leaning into her palm.

[break][break] Camille missed him. The days that she'd spent away had been good for her, Grandpa had said as much. She wouldn't have learned so much if she hadn't studied abroad. But phone calls or video chats didn't do henry booker justice. Didn't really capture the soft angles of his face when hit by sunlight, or his broad back, or the cute way his brow would furrow when he was concentrating.

[break][break] When he finally sets the desserts out, her eyes glisten with excitement. She leans forward with a deep, appreciative inhale. They're sweet and smell like home. She grabs the fork and cuts herself a piece, taking a bite out of it.

[break][break] "Mmm!" she says, half in surprise and the other in delight. "This is really good, Henry. What is this?"

Camille looked bemused as the silver-haired man reached for the bag of flowers, breathing in the floral scents.

[break][break] Before she - or he, for that matter - could make a comment, there was a sudden ring of blue light. Startled, the florist leaped back.

[break][break] "?!"

[break][break] She stumbled backwards as a squad of pokemon squirmed out of that mysterious ring of light, pokemon that Cami didn't recognize. But what was more startling was the fact that the drunkard had landed on his ass; her head whipped around to him.

[break][break] "What the - hey, are you okay?!"

[break][break] Cami wasn't a battler. Granny had never prepared her for that sort of thing, even going so far as to send her out of the region to make sure she didn't have to deal with half of Hoenn's atrocities. Being apprenticed to willow atkins hadn't prepared her for it either.

[break][break] "Ah!"

[break][break] She squeaked with surprise as a WAVE CRASH splashed in front of her, throwing her arms up to protect herself as she winced. One of the Palafin snickered, and then set their sights on Frank Caffey, before letting out a carefree trill and making a beeline for Frank Caffey.

[break][break] The drunkard man didn't seem to acknowledge her question, instead blurting out an answer of his own.

[break][break] "Oh, uh, sure! Blue?" Her words, in comparison, sounded a bit meek but they were the same nevertheless. She stared out in the dark, as if imagining that some confetti would pop out of somewhere indicating their success.

[break][break] Cami blinked as he suddenly asked about the flowers and she hesitated. "Oh, no, they're —" Her cheeks flushed. She had been meaning to steal them for an arrangement for henry booker's cafe, but ... "Okay, fine." She let out a laugh, offering him the bag. "Sure, they can be for you."

A late delivery in Rustboro had left her still wandering the streets long after the sun had set. This wasn't particularly normal — willow atkins was usually really good about her hours — but Camille had offered.

[break][break] But she hadn't realized that the delivery would've led her on a wild goosechase that spawned into the dark hours of the night. Eventually, she did find the customers just in time for his girlfriend's anniversary and their smiles had her efforts all the more worth it. Before she returned back to Fallarbor, Cami stopped at a store on the way that she knew sold the freshest bluebelles and lavender.

[break][break] Starlight twinkled ominously as the city's uneven lanterns swung, casting uneven shadow upon the path that she walked.

[break][break] She hadn't expected a man to run out of her, out of drunken stupor.

[break][break] Startled, the plastic bag full of flowers fell out of her grip and she staggered. "Huh - " She blinked, looking at the handsome man, before shaking her head. "No, it's okay. I'm fine."
