Not for the first time that week, Frank stumbled out of a bar in downtown Rustboro City, drunk bordering on really drunk. With his company crumbling, he had regressed into the habits of his youth: drinking, whoring, and spending his remaining money in excess.[break][break]

Thankfully, the night was still young. He could make it back to his apartment with a couple of hours to spare before midnight, take a shower, and be in bed early enough to get enough sleep before the next shitty work day.[break][break]

If he could make it.[break][break]

Staggering down the sidewalk, Frank did not notice the person in his way until he bumped right into them. "Shit, sorry," he slurred. "You 'kay? Didn't hit you that hard, did I?"[break][break]

An unexpected voice, coming from an entirely different source than the person's mouth, asked, "Red or blue?"[break][break]

He blinked. "What?"

A late delivery in Rustboro had left her still wandering the streets long after the sun had set. This wasn't particularly normal — willow atkins was usually really good about her hours — but Camille had offered.

[break][break] But she hadn't realized that the delivery would've led her on a wild goosechase that spawned into the dark hours of the night. Eventually, she did find the customers just in time for his girlfriend's anniversary and their smiles had her efforts all the more worth it. Before she returned back to Fallarbor, Cami stopped at a store on the way that she knew sold the freshest bluebelles and lavender.

[break][break] Starlight twinkled ominously as the city's uneven lanterns swung, casting uneven shadow upon the path that she walked.

[break][break] She hadn't expected a man to run out of her, out of drunken stupor.

[break][break] Startled, the plastic bag full of flowers fell out of her grip and she staggered. "Huh - " She blinked, looking at the handsome man, before shaking her head. "No, it's okay. I'm fine." She leaned down to pick up the bag again, inspecting the stems to make sure they were okay, before an disembodied voice spoke out from somewhere.

[break][break] "You... uh, that wasn't you, right?" She turned nervously to look at him. But based on the confusion on his face, that didn't seem to be the case.

Frank did not register the woman's dropped bag of flowers or even her question. Instead, he whirled around in a drunken daze, unable to gain his bearings, let alone discover the person who'd spoken.[break][break]

"Blue!" he exclaimed, several times. Turning to the woman, who hadn't walked away yet, he asked, "Blue sounds good t'you, right?"[break][break]

He wasn't sure what compelled him to answer when he couldn't even see who'd asked the initial question, but it seemed like the amicable thing to do.[break][break]

Only then did Frank notice the flowers in the woman's hand. "Oh, whoa, those're beautiful! For me?" He laughed, a little too loudly for the late hour.

[break][break] The drunkard man didn't seem to acknowledge her question, instead blurting out an answer of his own.

[break][break] "Oh, uh, sure! Blue?" Her words, in comparison, sounded a bit meek but they were the same nevertheless. She stared out in the dark, as if imagining that some confetti would pop out of somewhere indicating their success.

[break][break] Cami blinked as he suddenly asked about the flowers and she hesitated. "Oh, no, they're —" Her cheeks flushed. She had been meaning to steal them for an arrangement for henry booker's cafe, but ... "Okay, fine." She let out a laugh, offering him the bag. "Sure, they can be for you."

"Whoa, really?" Frank took the proffered flowers and propped his sunglasses—which he had indeed been wearing despite the late hour—onto his head for a better look at the colorful blossoms.[break][break]

"I wasn't being serious but these are suuuuper—"[break][break]

Whatever he was about to say died on his tongue when a bright light flashed, reminding him of MEGA EVOLUTION. But instead of a single Pokémon transforming, an entire squad of Palafin swam into the space between him and the strange girl.[break][break]

"What the fuck!" Frank exclaimed as one of them bowled him right over. He landed hard on his backside. His sunglasses knocked over into the shadows, but at least he held onto the flowers.[break][break]

"What's happening?!"

Camille looked bemused as the silver-haired man reached for the bag of flowers, breathing in the floral scents.

[break][break] Before she - or he, for that matter - could make a comment, there was a sudden ring of blue light. Startled, the florist leaped back.

[break][break] "?!"

[break][break] She stumbled backwards as a squad of pokemon squirmed out of that mysterious ring of light, pokemon that Cami didn't recognize. But what was more startling was the fact that the drunkard had landed on his ass; her head whipped around to him.

[break][break] "What the - hey, are you okay?!"

[break][break] Cami wasn't a battler. Granny had never prepared her for that sort of thing, even going so far as to send her out of the region to make sure she didn't have to deal with half of Hoenn's atrocities. Being apprenticed to willow atkins hadn't prepared her for it either.

[break][break] "Ah!"

[break][break] She squeaked with surprise as a WAVE CRASH splashed in front of her, throwing her arms up to protect herself as she winced. One of the Palafin snickered, and then set their sights on Frank Caffey, before letting out a carefree trill and making a beeline for Frank Caffey.

One of the Pokéballs clipped to Frank's belt trembled, then burst open as the resident inside forced its way out. His Rotom, Duke, emerged in a flash of light and forced the Palafin to halt with a sudden SHOCK WAVE.[break][break]

"Duke?!" Frank exclaimed, surprised. None of his Pokémon had ever come out of their Pokéballs on their own accord before.[break][break]

Then he remembered the girl. "Yeah, yeah, I'm okay. Are you?" he assured her as he slowly rose to his feet, his backside aching from the fall.[break][break]

Around then, the Palafin squealed with indignation as the Rotom zapped them again and again. But it was one against a crowd, and Duke was swiftly cornered.[break][break]

"Shit, shit," Frank said. Then an idea struck him, a truly ingenius one. He grabbed the girl's wrist. "We gotta run! Duke, retreat!"

Brilliant light flashed out suddenly before the man, and it took her a moment to realize that it was a pokemon, not him.

[break][break] "Y-yeah," she said shakily, still glancing between him and the sudden creature that had appeared out of the portal. Cami wasn't a pokemon trainer, so she wasn't good at these types of things. She fumbled for her pokeball anyway, releasing her Skiddo.

[break][break] "Briar! Razor Leaf!"

[break][break] With a shout, the goat-like pokemon lunched and tiny blade-like leaves shot out into the night sky, cutting down the Palafin and making way for their path to escape.

[break][break] Just in time too. She nodded quickly as the drunk man grabbed her wrist, attempting to sprint through the opening.

They ran. Frank didn't know where he was going, nor did he care. He just dashed toward whatever looked like the safest location—which happened to be a covered bus stop. He released the girl as soon as they were safe under the roof, turning to see if the Palafin had followed. Miraculously, they had not. [break][break]

Frank sat down on one of the benches, sagging visibly with relief. "My head hurts," he complained, covering his eyes with a hand. "I'm dying, miss. My brain is so dead that I just hallucinated some Palafin coming out of a ring." [break][break]

His Rotom came to hover by his side, making distressed noises. [break][break]

"Leave me, Duke," the man continued, trying to raise his other hand to wave the Pokémon off. "It's too late." [break][break]

A rumble of an engine heralded the arrival of a bus. Frank sat up when he noticed the digital sign showing its destination. [break][break]

"Oh! This is my bus." Moving to board the vehicle, he gave a final wave to the girl who'd encountered the bizarre scene with him. "Don't let the Palafin get you, miss! Get home safely!"
