It's not often he visits Starlight; though it was owned by two of his fellow underbosses, one of whom was a close friend, gambling has never appealed to Gavin. He prefers situations where he's guaranteed the win.

Of course, such a thing could be arranged for the right price... but that's not why he's here tonight. The world's end is on the horizon, and Gavin finds himself approaching Starlight's bar with a need to take the edge off.

"Scotch, on the rocks."

His usual.

Amber eyes cut across the bar in search of a familiar face. Plenty of Rockets frequented the casino, but it's not a Rocket on whom his attention settles. He's sure he's seen her somewhere before, but where?

He taps the bar softly when he figures it out.

"You're that actress, aren't you?" Realizing she probably gets mobbed a lot by fans, he clarifies, "I'm not looking for an autograph, or a date, I was just trying to figure out where I've seen you before."

With a chuckle, he lifts the glass of Scotch in a scarred hand and drinks.

Sootopolis City.

Fae had figured she might as well see what all the fuss is about, because everyone in Hoenn seems to always go on about the city that is under Team Rocket’s control. She hadn’t been here for the siege, she hadn’t been here when the Tree of Life became gigantic and could apparently be seen from everyone in Hoenn, and she most definitely hadn’t been here when whatever-that-thing’s-name-is had attacked the city and opened a portal into Ultra Space or whatever. She had heard about all that, though.

So, what’s her opinion of Sootopolis? It has a neat aesthetic, but in the end, it’s just like most cities. It may be more heavily guarded and illegal activities may take place, yet it’s money that does most of the talking. Take Casino Starlight: full of the League’s civilians and Team Rocket members alike – an apparently neutral space in this city of crime.

At least the poker tables are decent. Fae has always liked games of cards.

For now, she just sits at the bar after a couple of wins, enjoying a mojito when someone sitting nearby addresses her as that actress. Typical. Nothing new. Even in a city full of criminals, she’s still Fae Madden.

”I’ve heard worse.” She responds with ease, her gaze falling upon the man who results more familiar than what she expects. Her eyes narrow, they’re bright colour of dandelions.

”...And you’re that terrorist, right?” A smirk, slight yet sharp as a knife. ”You sure you don’t want that autograph?”

She seems utterly unbothered, and she goes on to take a sip from her drink as if nothing.

Gavin laughs, rough and deep and genuine.

"Touché."

He doesn't deny it; there'd be no point. He's not disguised, and Gavin Merlino is as welcome in Sootopolis as any other. The one city in Hoenn where he needn't wear a mask to be at peace. It wasn't so different from being an actress, in that regard.

"I suppose our fame precedes us both."

He returns her smirk. She doesn't seem bothered, which is nice enough.

"Come here often?" It's asked with a touch of humour. More seriously, he adds, "The city, I mean. Excellent way to dodge the press; most of them don't dare show their faces."

That smirk seems more sinister with the implication.

Realistically, she probably should be worried for her safety. Most people would be. A city of criminals, talking to a terrorist… it’s like something out of one of her movies. Perhaps that’s why it doesn’t bother her all that much; because her perception of the world is different from that of most people. Perhaps it’s because Team Rocket hasn’t done anything that particularly affects her (not yet, at least). Or, perhaps it has to do with the fact that the world is fucking ending. It may just be a combination of all those things.

Whatever the case, Fae just enjoys her drink, noting the way he laughs at her response. She assumes most people are probably a tad more afraid when recognizing him.

”Hmm… Wonder what’s worse to deal with: cops or paparazzi.” In her experience, the latter, but none of her past run-ins with the police (there have been a few) have been because she’s a wanted criminal. ”I guess the prospect of being kidnapped and tortured into silence or killed is enough to keep most unwanted people away, huh?”

For him, at least. Paparazzi and other members of the media couldn't arrest you. They might attempt a citizens arrest if they were feeling particularly noble, but most wouldn't try that with Gavin.

Lugia was a great deterrent, bless her.

He doesn't flinch away from the blunt words, nor does he laugh. It's not a joke. It's Rocket's reality.

"It certainly helps." He sips at his drink. "Those who don't meddle in Rocket's affairs are perfectly safe."

It's more statement than threat.

"It's a big city. What are you in the mood for?" He'd list off his favourite upscale lounge, a popular nightclub, a few restaurants. "If it's a view you want, you can't beat the cliffs at night."

Gavin wasn't one to wax poetic about scenery, but the glimmer of the city's lights on the midnight blue of Sootopolis' bay is a sight he's grown almost fond of.

Fae hadn’t been particularly worried about coming to Sootopolis, but she also hadn’t been foolish enough not to tell at least a couple of people about it. There’s always Find My Rotom Phone and apps like those, but she had assumed exactly what Gavin claims: as long as she doesn’t bother Team Rocket, they won’t bother her.

I’ll keep that in mind, I love a good hike.” It’s actually one of her favourite hobbies, and ever since production got delayed because of the barrier and the meteor and all that, she’s had a lot of time to go hiking around Hoenn. So far it’s one of the only things she likes about this Arceus-forsaken region.

Though he still doesn't laugh, her jest gets a smirk out of him.

"Sorry to disappoint."

They had PR agents who were perfectly willing to spread their propaganda without the threat of violence.

She brings up crazy fans, and Gavin's shift in expression suggests that he's had some experience with that sort of thing already. Thankfully none of them have accosted him in public, but one night he and Tempest Quinn had googled their names for shits and giggles and delved into the depths of people's depravity. It had been equal parts horrifying and humorous.

"Perhaps they know better," he suggests, shrugging, "but they are out there. I'll never understand it." Though his ego did appreciate flattery, it was considerably less pleasant coming from someone missing that many brain cells. "I bet you get weird fans all the time. What's the weirdest thing you've ever been sent?"

He finds he's enjoying this conversation, surprisingly.

She can imagine it, and quite frankly, imagining it is enough for her. People really can be creepy as hell sometimes.

If anything, perhaps Fae’s own personal silver lining when it comes to being trapped in Hoenn is that the barrier keeps fans from overseas from sending physical mail. For now all she gets are the letters from fans from this region and social media posts.

Is that his kink? Gavin has to puzzle over it momentarily. He was attracted to danger, to strength, to anyone that could flip him onto his back and pin him down... but that wasn't specific to criminals. No, the reason he didn't pursue anyone outside of Rocket was more from faction loyalty than anything else.

Her voice brings him back from his wandering thoughts.

"Even gym leaders have it bad. Everyone seems to think they're fucking each other." It'd been particularly weird to think about people 'shipping' Temp with Alexei, considering their prior relationship. "Apparently the League are having orgies left and right. Maybe we're missing out."

He laughs, finishing his drink. He doesn't immediately order another, instead calling for an ice water and one of the rage candybars behind the bar.

Teeth. He can't imagine.

"God, imagine if they weren't." Like, how did they get the teeth? Were they a dentist, or were they pulling people's teeth out to give to their idol? Weirdos. "I've never understood the idea of sending nudes to someone out of the blue. In what universe does that go over well?" The only time it was ever funny was when Tempest Quinn had accidentally send Martín del Mar the nudes meant for Gavin. "I heard someone sent a dead Zubat to a gym leader, once."

He unwraps the candy bar and bites into it, knowing he'll need something in his stomach to settle the Scotch.

"You planning on gambling tonight?"

Why would someone volunteer to risk their life to protect a region that constantly faces life threatening danger? It’s ridiculous, and as far as she’s aware, the pay isn’t even great or anything. It’s why she’ll never understand her own sister’s decision to join the rangers. If anything, it makes her worry for Hailee.

Thankfully, Gavin’s comment about unsolicited nudes gets a laugh out of her, pulling her thoughts away from all those worries. Not many people actually manage to make her laugh, it’s somewhat of an accomplishment.

It's a joke, of course. There was nothing the League could do in order to sway Gavin's loyalty to Team Rocket. He's in too deep. If Rocket were to drive him away, he'd sooner become nomadic than throw his lot in with the government.[break][break]

Who knew what kind of crazy fan-mail he'd get if his address were public? Hell, some psychopath might send him someone's head and consider it a kind gesture. The very idea disturbs him.[break][break]

Ominous coming from a terrorist, perhaps. He cants his head, thinking. He likes Fae. "If you do decide to go for a little poker, avoid that table there."
