The stream of fire collided with the INFERNO of the opposing black Charizard. Not a moment too soon, Shalin leaned in on Kiara, taking cover the best she could. The impact of those two powerful Fire attacks would create a blaze that was going to reach her and parry her charge. If she had taken that INFERNO head-on, it probably would have reduced her to a pile of ash on the spot. Instead, it was her Pyroar that took the brunt of the combined attack, though the outsides of her legs were both searing red in the aftermath. She needed to make a stand. Now. Shalin put her earplugs back in. This was going to be beyond loud. It was going to be outright deafening.

"Need your help, Starr!" Shalin cried with a half-groan, the green-furred Espeon, also in full riding gear and sized to carry her trainer, emerging from her second Poké Ball. The large psychic-type bounded toward Shalin, the squinting rider taking her hands off Kiara's reins and clenching a Z-CRYSTAL in her right fist.

From her perch, she crossed her arms, covering her mouth with them, then released them skyward, opening her fists and hurling the white-colored crystal above her. It was the Z-Pose for her Pyroar's ultimate attack.

"EMPRESS' ROYAL ROAR!"

Kiara took a deep breath, faced the Charizard, then bellowed a primal roar that could be heard throughout Littleroot, even over the chaos of the legendary Pokémon battle going on near the Primal Point. It was not physically possible for the Pyroar to shout any louder without causing permanent damage to herself. Even with her earplugs in, Shalin's hair stood on end; it was just as loud as Treble's Clanging Scales could get, the lioness' entire frame rattling much like the Kommo-o's scales. If it got any more intense, the vibration would have hurt her, too.

The war cry strengthened Shalin and her forces, the Espeon's forehead crystal glowing red with the added mental strength from Kiara's heroic effort. Mental strength Shalin expected would be sufficient to overpower the Klefki's resistance to the PSYCHIC assault she was about to rain down on the Fairy-type.

Shalin's tactics forced Felix to retreat. Unsurprising, given he and his Pokémon probably had their eardrums blown out by Kiara's maddeningly loud shout. The move to create a SMOKESCREEN was the right one, not wanting to be trampled by a big lioness riding him down at umpteen miles an hour. It bought Shalin what she didn't like her enemies to have: time. While she was a bit more adept at long battles than the Mauville Gym Leader, there was a tactic the Smokescreen couldn't protect them.

"Starr, light 'em up!" she commanded in a desperate and likely vain attempt to hide her verbal command for Starr's DAZZLING GLEAM to light up the inside of the smoke hiding them. "Kiara, point a FLAMETHROWER at the moving shadows--but not the Charizard!" The purpose of the combination attack was twofold. The first was to burn away the SMOKESCREEN. The second was to light either Felix or his Pokémon on fire. If the rest of them happened to get caught in the brilliant, burning light, all the better! Shalin, too, would nock an arrow, looking for a dragon-shaped shadow within the smoke and letting fly toward the winged Pokémon.

Shalin let fly with her Avian Arrow the moment Felix left the inferno that was about to replace the cover of smoke, and not a moment too soon, either; he had began retaliating with a ranged weapon of his own, on top of a relentless wave of AIR SLASHes from his dragon! By the time Shalin could dismount her fallen Pyroar and send out the Yanmega that had drawn the Rockets out of hiding in the first place, the man had opened fire on her. One bullet knocked her bow out of her hand, one was lodged in her upper arm, and a third near her belly, which became vulnerable after switching to a mount that she couldn't take cover behind as easily!

While Starr and Shalin couldn't mentally communicate on the same level as she could with her Wyrdeer, they were able to communicate well enough mentally to formulate a plan. Slumping in Flit's saddle. Shalin verbally commanded the Yanmega to rise into the air, the Espeon ready to ALLY SWITCH her out of battle if things looked bad.

Once the two were at altitude, Flit reared and buzzed his wings sharply in the Charizard's direction, a line of rising boulders rose from the ground in the form of ANCIENTPOWER directed its way. The dragonfly's rider looked like she couldn't handle too much more...!

Felix looked desperate, not even asking or ordering his Klefki to protect his Charizard from imminent peril. Shalin gasped when she saw the combatant physically throw the small Fairy-type in front of the black dragon. She imagined that was a big factor in the Klefki not being able to fully PROTECT itself. Whatever kept the Charizard out of harm's way worked, though--and left Shalin in it, what with the THUNDER WAVE headed her way!

"Now, Starr!" Shalin shouted, her vision fading to white as the green Espeon ALLY SWITCHed with her. The added weight was more than the Yanmega could bear. Flit fled the Klefki with a parting U-TURN, the maneuver letting them both get in range for the distant Shalin to withdraw them before the giant dragonfly crashed or the Espeon's mind shut down from the loud buzzing in her ears. And just in case that wasn't enough, Shalin fired two more Avian Arrows at the Klefki, though her shakiness made her accuracy dubious at best.
