It was rare for Marshall to travel anywhere in Hoenn without a motorcycle, but that was exactly how the day found him, hiking along Route 115 in search of wild Pokémon. Ever since becoming a Ranger trainee, he realized he needed to expand his roster, so he packed some essential items for a day trip and struck out to an area of the region he normally never visited.[break][break]

Admittedly, he had driven there via motorcycle, so the trip wasn't completely out of character for him.[break][break]

"Keep your eyes peeled, Redline," Marshall instructed his Kommo-o, who walked alongside him. "After a bit, we can stop for lunch along the coast. The water's pretty shallow and there are some little islands we can explore."[break][break]

He gestured westward. Distantly, the ocean water glittered beneath the brilliant sun. Redline made a rumbling noise, indicating she'd rather have lunch then and there instead of later. But such was not her trainer's plan, so she trudged along beside him, turning her head this way and that, alert.

Time and time again, Elinor proved capable of finding time to pursue the furthering of her Pokémon roster. Today was no exception.

Hiking along Route 115. Elinor and her companion Pokémon, a lime-green and pink-scaled Kommo-o, kept watching for any and all potential recruits. Alas, it was not a wild Pokémon that they gazed at first. But instead, a trainer and what Elinor assumed was HIS companion Kommo-o

What a coincidence! Elinor couldn’t help but think as they walked toward the pair. Though she was in no hurry, instead favored to keep a watchful gaze on any signs that the two did not wish to interact with them.

The Kommo-o by her side was by far too taken by the view to even notice the female of his own specie getting closer and closer.

A wild Togetic emerged from between two trees, just minding its own business. Marshall slowed his walk and nudged Redline with an elbow, pointing with his other hand toward the Togetic. "Look, she's cute! She'd be perfect for our team, right?"[break][break]

Redline shrugged at him, but bounded off to engage with the Togetic. The wild Pokémon noticed the Kommo-o's approach and attempted to flee, but a quick HEADBUTT rendered her incapacitated so that Marshall could throw a Poké Ball.[break][break]

As he went to pick up the capsule, a flash of color in the corner of his eye caught his attention.[break][break]

"Oh wow! Redline, look!" he exclaimed.[break][break]

A few yards away on the hiking trail was another Kommo-o, a shiny one, with scales of bright lime green and pink. Standing next to him was his trainer, who was watching Marshall and Redline with interest. Something about her looked familiar, like he'd seen her before, but he was sure they'd never met.[break][break]

Still, that didn't mean they couldn't meet now. Marshall smiled and waved at the woman. "Hi!" he shouted, pocketing the Poké Ball that carried his new Togetic. "Beautiful Kommo-o you have there!"[break][break]

Redline grunted at him, offended.[break][break]

"You're more beautiful, though, I promise," he told his Pokémon, laughing.

Elinor watched the Marshall and his Kommo-o jump into action. Taking down a wild Togetic in a quick move. So engrossed were they in the going-on that neither noticed the Aromatisse that waltzed by. Unfortunately for them, Aromatisse was not about to be ignored. So used to being the center of attention, the Aromatisse made its way over to Elinor, grabbed one of her Pokéballs, and demanded that they pay attention to her.

Annoyed by this display of entitlement the Shiny Kommo-o grabbed the Pokéball and dunked it on the Aromatisse’s face beginning the capture.

Elinor looked baffled for a moment but did not decide to question it. Instead, returning to watching Marshal, who had seemingly noticed them now.

In fact, he was approaching alongside his Pokémon.

“Thank you,” Elinor replied. “Yours look pretty great too.” A wide smile on her lips. A chuckle escaped her as the Kommo-o seemed offended by its trainer’s statement. Elinor looked at her own Kommo-o to see how it was responding.

It was clearly trying to not look at the fine female specimen that stood before him. If reptilian cheeks could blush, he would certainly be doing so.

She gently nudged him with an elbow, as she gave him a knowing glance and a raised eyebrow. Kaleo, you playboy. Elinor thought torn between reminding her Kommo-o about his ‘wife’ at home and wanting to see Kaleo spectacularly fail at courting this Female Kommo-o.

"My name is Elinor. It is a pleasure to meet you." Elinor decided to say.

As soon as the woman introduced herself, the lightbulb clicked on in Marshall's head. He knew he recognized her from somewhere![break][break]

"Elinor! Like, Councilwoman Elinor Anderson?" he exclaimed, shocked to see such a high-ranking individual dressed in casual clothing.[break][break]

As part of his Ranger training, Marshall had to learn about important individuals within the Rangers and the League, including members of the Council. The expectation he would ever meet one of them had been low. After all, he was a mere trainee. Suffice to say, meeting a council member at random, and in casual clothes no less, thoroughly shocked him.[break][break]

But not enough for him to forget his manners. "I'm Marshall Connor. Pleased to meet you, too!" He extended a hand for a shake. "Are you enjoying the nice weather, too?"[break][break]

Redline, who had already assessed, then dismissed, Elinor's male Kommo-o, turned at an unusual sound. A wild Carbink floated close to the group. Redline cut off its approach and took it down with CLOSE COMBAT. Upon seeing the tussle, Marshall threw a Poké Ball to capture the Carbink.

“The one and only.” Elinor nodded, pleased that he recognized her.

Manners were not forgotten. She appreciated his quick introduction. She took his hand and gave it a firm shake, one accustomed to men who’d try to put her in submission with such simple gestures.

“I certainly am. It’s nice to get to spend some time outside the office for once.” She spoke. “How about you? What brings you to these parts?”

As the two humans conversed. Kaleo found itself enraptured by the other Kommo-o, especially as it saw how she so quickly dealt with a Carbink. Unfortunately even he could see she had already dismissed him. As unfortunate as it was. Perhaps it was better this way. He reminded himself that he did have a significant other at home.

A sigh escaped from Kaleo. So lost in thought, had he been that he almost didn’t notice the Mawile that tried to SUCKER PUNCH him. Unfortunately for it. Kaleo was battle-hardened and at the last moment used its powerful grip to catch the Mawile by its throat.

Lifting the Mawile by its throat caused great distress. But it did quiet down after Kaleo gave it a stern look. Kaleo then offered the Mawile to Elinor.

She gave the Kommo-o a nod and threw a Pokéball at the Mawile, hoping for its expedient capture.

Marshall could appreciate Miss Anderson's sentiment about the outdoors. The thought of spending all his time in a stuffy office, seated behind a desk and a mound of paperwork, filled him with nausea.[break][break]

"I'm out here to catch Pokémon," he explained simply.[break][break]

As if to prove his point, the underbrush nearby rustled as a Cradily emerged from between two trees. Marshall nodded at Redline, who swiftly engaged the Cradily in CLOSE COMBAT. Once more, she subdued the wild Pokémon so her trainer could throw a Poké Ball.[break][break]

Turning back to the councilwoman, Marshall said, "I joined the Rangers recently, so I figured I should expand my collection and build up a good team." He hesitated, then added, "Since I'm still a trainee, I don't know if I'll join the fighting — if it comes down to that, I mean. But I want to be ready, just in case."

The Mawile was caught, she placed the Pokéball in her pocket and returned her attention to Marshall. She gave an understanding nod. “Yeah expanding your collection is a good idea.” Elinor agreed.

But a worried look did hit her when the topic of the fighting came up. “I will admit. I do not like the thought of dragging Trainees into this fight. But I would be much less worried if they’d all come as prepared as you seem intent on being.” She remembered all too well how her first encounter with real danger as a Ranger went. And she would not wish it upon anyone.

Meanwhile, a Turtonator rose from its slumber nearby. Hungry and annoyed by the sound of talking humans. It quickly charged at the group FLAIL’ing and yelling all kinds of draconic curses.

But Kommo-o annoyed from the previous attempt at a sucker punch decided to return the FLAIL with a DRAIN PUNCH square in the face. Quickly knocking out the Fire/Dragon. Kommo-o then dragged the Turtonator over to Elinor.

She knew what had to be done. And so she threw the Pokéball.

The fact that Miss Anderson's compliment also revealed a worrisome situation among the Rangers was not lost on Marshall. He remembered then that she was a Ranger too, though the details of her assignment and rank eluded him at that moment. Still, she knew the situation better than he. The somberness of her expression spoke volumes.[break][break]

"Do you think it will come down to fighting?" he asked. "And is there anything I can do to help, even as a trainee?"[break][break]

A sound caught his Kommo-o's attention, but she seemed undisturbed by whatever caused it. If anything, Redline seemed bored with standing around, so she started down the path toward the seaside. Noticing this, Marshall tacked on another question before Miss Anderson could reply.[break][break]

"Should we walk and talk?"

With The Turtonator caught her attention returned to Marshall. His questions were worrisome. Not because of their contents, but because they suggested a personality all too willing to throw themselves headfirst into the fray.

But before she could answer the questions Marshall suggested they walked and talked, to which she merely nodded as she began to follow him. “As much as I hope it won’t. I am almost certain it will.” Elinor spoke grimly. She figured she didn’t need to sugarcoat it as two Rangers talking, surely he would appreciate that much.

“Making sure you don’t get in over your head, is the best help you can give,” Elinor spoke. Blunt and to the point perhaps a bit too much. But she feared Marshall would not get the message quite as clearly if she wrapped it in.

Meanwhile, something caught the attention of her Kommo-o along the way. An oddly round boulder moving in their direction. Before Elinor could even issue the command DRAINING PUNCH with round rock halting the attacking Golem.

The Golem wasn’t as sturdy as others of its kind and so fell quickly to the fist. It was unable to fight getting dragged to Elinor so that she could capture it.
