The young girl below almost looked half his age. To see her in such a combat-heavy and dangerous environment inspired a sense of pity. But the Pokémon at her command made her dangerous, and that didn't really leave him with much of a choice: he would neutralize the threat if he had to.

Riding on the back of his Dragapult, the half-masked man warns her. "Turn back, señorita," He says, gripping the reins of his steed as he stares her down with a steely gaze. "The battlefield is no place for you."

Would she heed the Paldean's warning and go? Not likely. But at least he could say that he had tried.

Julia didn't see an ounce of pity in the Rocket's eyes, only a steely gaze from behind a half-masked face. Would she be able to remember any identifying features that might help ID this man? She had no idea, but there were more pressing matters to deal with now. He looked older, more experienced, but Julia wouldn't let that deter her.

[break][break]"I'm not going anywhere, not until Littleroot is safe from people like you!" she shouted back. He was probably right that she didn't belong on the battlefield, but she was here now, and she'd do everything in her power to protect this town. "Spot, use Shadow Ball!"

[break][break]The Lucario at her side held his paws together in front of him. Between them, an orb of shadows swirled into existence, which he then hurled toward the Dragapult. Julia didn't like the idea of attacking a Pokémon while someone was riding it. But she had to remind herself that Rocket wouldn't show her any mercy if she were in the same position.

Regardless, Cade Atreides would not hold back against the likes of the girl and her Pokémon. He was being paid to be here, while they had come here of their own accord. Perhaps he could leave them with a better understanding of war by the end of it.[break][break]

It wasn't as if they were being given a choice, anyway. Her LUCARIO kicks into gear with a SHADOW BALL before they can say anything more, and the masked man spurs his DRAGAPULT into creating a shadowy portal beneath them. They sink into it, effectively EVADING the attack, before disappearing altogether.[break][break]

Perhaps Julia Davis might think they had abandoned this fight.[break]

As far as Julia was concerned, destruction and conquest were Rocket's only motivations here. She never would have guessed that, in his own way, Cade was also fighting for the world. Not that she would have believed in such a noble claim from Rocket. Everything that Julia knew about them led to nothing but self-centered desires for conquest and wealth and power. And to her, Cade was just another enemy to her home who had to be stopped.

[break][break]The Shadow Ball raced right over the Rocket sinking into some shadowy portal and hit a distant tree, where it exploded harmlessly into scattering shadows. Spot let out a confused bark.

[break][break]"Where'd they go?!" Julia asked, looking around. "Spot, can you Detect them?"

[break][break]It'd be hard with all the chaos of the battlefield, but it was better than leaving the man's whereabouts unknown. Spot closed his eyes for a moment and then reopened them with a flash of blue light. He used his aura senses to scan the environment around him for any sign of their wayward foe...

[attr="class","cadehead-text"]The pair suddenly reemerge, and the DRAGAPULT wastes no time in seizing that surprise to try and strike the LUCARIO down. Though unaware of its opponent's heightened senses, it attempts to snap at its opponent anyway before sharply ascending into the sky in flight. Its masked rider guides it towards a rocky ridge nearby before sliding off its back there.[break][break]

Parting from its master, the spectral dragon leaves to continue its fight against the Lucario. But not before the man stomps his boot down against the edge of that ridge, starting a domino effect of crumbling rock that steadily turns into a small ROCK SLIDE as he backs away.[break][break]

"Watch out down below."

How that rock slide will evolve, which individual it endangers down below, and how they attempt to avoid it, remains to be seen. But Cade is hoping it will buy his Dragapult enough time for its next strike. The sooner this ended the better.[break]

It was like their auras had been swallowed by the shadows they'd faded into. Spot growled to himself as his eyes darted about, trying to pinpoint his elusive targets. Suddenly, they and their auras reappeared in front of him, giving him barely enough time to hold up his arms defensively before the Dragapult struck. The powerful attack had Spot wincing as the pair flew upwards.

[break][break]"Shoot," Julia said, mostly to herself. An attack that even Spot's Detect couldn't protect him against... That wasn't good. That Dragapult needed to go down. "Try another Shad—"

Cade Atreides said:

"Watch out down below."

[break]"Huh?"

[break][break]Julia sucked in a sharp, hollow gasp at the sight of the rocks falling. Falling and tumbling and clattering against the cliff face. Crushing and pain and bleeding and crying and hopelessness and loss and...!

[break][break]No. Not this time.

[break][break]She didn't even realize her hand was moving until she'd released Sparkie from her Poké Ball and just barely realized it was when she pointed up and shouted, "Telekinesis!" She regained herself just in time to see a flash of fear across Sparkie's face, but the Alolan Raichu raised her arms, eyes glowing green, and focused all of her psychic power into those boulders. They glowed in a green outline and slowed as Sparkie strained against them, looking like she was pushing against the air. Julia released a quivering breath.

[break][break]"Attagirl," Julia said.

[break][break]With the immediate threat to his trainer being neutralized, Spot was free to focus on the Dragapult again. He picked up on Julia's interrupted order and gathered another Shadow Ball between his paws to fire at the Stealth Pokémon.

[attr="class","cadehead-text"]Cade was thankful Julia Davis had summoned another Pokémon to help against the rock slide. Double battles helped expedite things. Though, unfortunately, this meant the LUCARIO was free to cast another SHADOW BALL at his approaching DRAGAPULT.[break][break]

Though it attempted to phase out of harm's way with its CLEAR BODY, it was struck anyway. Screeches filled the air as it twirled in the air, its aura intensifying with a DRAGON DANCE in preparation for its retaliation.[break][break]

Meanwhile, up above, Cade Atreides summons a BEARTIC by his side. Despite the continued struggle below, he would make use of this higher ground to continue applying pressure to the young woman and her Pokémon.[break][break]

He commands his bruin with a nod, and it spawns an AVALANCHE with its large paws that descends wider and more dangerously than the previous rock slide. This endangers both the ALOLAN RAICHU and the LUCARIO.[break]

In retrospect, Julia should have expected this guy to use the same dirty trick twice. Only now it was a lot worse with his Beartic's Avalanche. Sparkie was still struggling with the first set of rocks; there was no way she'd be able to hold back an entire avalanche on top of that.

[break][break]"RUN!"

[break][break]Her and her team's safety was way more important than trying to get the upper hand in this fight. Sparkie obeyed immediately, holding her Telekinesis just long enough to float back out of the initial rock slide's way before turning around and joining her trainer in fleeing from the ridge. Spot hesitated a moment longer, still watching his opponent. Just before turning away to run, as well, his eyes flashed with another Detect. Unfortunately, turning his back on his opponent would make it less effective.

Watching as they flee, he doesn't need to make a command to prompt his DRAGAPULT into the chase. It twirls throughout the air as it targets the LUCARIO, its SPEED and ATTACK enhanced by the previous dance, before it launches a pair of DRAGON DARTS.[break][break]

As rocks and piles of snow crash down below, however, he prompts his BEARTIC with a point downward. "Wash them away." And so it does, leaning its head back before spewing an entire SURF from its open maw. The size of this torrent is as large as the AVALANCHE before, threatening to sweep away Julia Davis and her two Pokémon alike.[break][break]

"Have you had enough?" He calls out, his voice echoing out throughout their portion of the mountain. If he hustles, he can still catch up to that massive lizard (GROUDON) and perhaps have time to spare for the PRIMAL POINT as well. "Live to fight another day! You have your whole life ahead of you..."[break]

A flash of aura in his peripheral warned Spot of an incoming attack. He sidestepped out of the way of the first Dragon Dart, but he saw the second too late. He let out a pained cry as the attack sent him tumbling forward.

[break][break]"Spot!" Julia shouted. He was barely able to keep his eyes open now, let alone flee from the avalanche... which was turning into a deluge thanks to the Beartic's Surf. Julia quickly recalled Spot back to his Poké Ball and then yelled, "This way!" She turned and fled into the trees around the town, Sparkie hot on her heels.

Cade Atreides said:

"Have you had enough? Live to fight another day! You have your whole life ahead of you..."

[break]She gritted her teeth at what sounded like nothing more than a taunt to her. She didn't want to run away from this guy, not when he had the potential to do so much damage, but he wasn't giving her much room to work with. She couldn't charge back into the fray without putting herself and her Pokémon in danger. Curse this Rocket and his dirty tactics... Julia had to figure out a way to fight back, but first, she needed to lay low and regroup. Once she'd figured something out, she'd go back to protecting everyone. That was her job as a Ranger, wasn't it? She couldn't fail at it again...
